Bandon gets USGA events
« on: November 27, 2002, 05:02:12 PM »
Attention Bandon lovers, of which there are few around here.
It was announced today that Bandon Dunes will host the 2006 Curtis Cup and the 2007 U.S. Men's Mid Am.  The Curtis Cup will be played over the Pacfic Trails course.  The Mid Am will use both.  No details on where the match play in the Mid Am will be played.  I am guessing Bandon since it is the longer of the two.
A positive for golf.  Both great match play courses.  Both in September in good weather.  Too bad everyone must wait 3-4 years.

It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

I'm pretty sure it's Pacific Dunes.

The coolest part of this is that I've been invited to help set the pin placements for the Curtis Cup.

I intend to re-read the thread on Victoria Golf Club before the event!

Before anyone gets too excited here, I think one needs to consider that the USGA often has a hand in course architectural modifiications and maintenance practices on sites they select, subtle and indirect though it may be.

I was recently out to a site of a major USGA tournament course, and two things were happening that myself and another GCA'er took immediate exception to.  First, new "back" tees were being built on a number of holes, some which made sense and others that didn't, but more disturbing is that the historically rugged bunkers were being "cleaned up", with new sod faces.  I couldn't help but think that the USGA simply wanted to avoid rules decisions as to whether a ball was in or out of a bunker, and the end result is that aesthetically, the bunkers suffered in comparison from what they had been.

At least, that seemed to be the pragmatic reason for the changes.  I'd hate to think that they were just concerned that the course looked plush and green and uniform when presented on display for their tournament!

Mike they had better plan on more than one day/week/month if they want to "cleanup" the look of the bunkers at pacific dunes lol

Mike,

Don't worry, that doesn't happen for the "smaller" events such as the Mid-Am and the Curtis Cup.  Only for the Opens and the US Amateurs would any changes be considered.

Tom that should be a lot of fun.  Since it is match play, you can be a little more aggressive.  Victoria might even have been playable for match play.

Bandon's getting more than that. My sources tell me they are about to get a new head-pro. John Grothie, who started working at Pebble less than three years ago supposedly has the job. If any of you kids out there want to advance quickly in this business this sure seems like the right road, Congrats John.
