North East France

In August my wife and I hope to travel back from Alsace to one of the channel ports by car.  Should we pack the golf clubs, or should we simply bring back a few cases of Riesling and Gewurtztraminer?  We won't be making the detour towards Paris, so our route will probably be Metz, Charleville, Arras, Calais, though we might (if we don't take the clubs) allow ourselves to stray as far west as Reims and a bottle or two of the bubbly stuff.

Will we miss any good golf in so doing?

Mark,

From Arras, don't take the motorway to Calais - go on the N Road through Hesdin to Montreuil-sur-Mer. This is a beautiful little town with some nice restaurants and also the French shop for The Wine Society (www.thewinesociety.com).

After lunch, drive up the motorway to Calais and play at any of the top class courses on the coast west of Calais. The best courses are Le Touquet (Mer), Belle Dune, and Hardelot (Pins). Le Touquet and Belle Dune are links courses while Hardelot is a lovely heathland course and is my favourite of the three.

Thank you both - one case fewer wine, then....
