I'll be going to Cabo, Mexico in June and want to play a few rounds.  Has anyone played Querencia?  It's the new Fazio private club that is set up in the hills off, supposed to be good.  I definitely also want to play the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol and El Dorado (the Nicklaus course at Cabo Real).  

Any feedback on any of these?

Jimmy - this has been discussed here a few times and I'd say try the search engine but it doesn't work all that well!  Maybe go back through the threads... it wasn't that long ago.

In any event, I've played every course down there EXCEPT Querencia.  I hear it is quite worth doing... if you can make it happen, do it.

Outside of that, each of the course at Cabo del Sol are great, I'd put Eldorado as better than either of them though... Palmilla is good fun, all 3 nines.. Cabo Real is ok, somewhat disappointing if you expect a bunch of ocean holes but get that out of your mind and you'll have fun... Cabo San Lucas CC is decent, no great shakes.

Its very private and tough to get on, at least last year.  I heard recently that they are in financial trouble and the development was or is going to be sold???  They have a web site www.loscabosquerencia.com

I played it about a month ago.  Great course, probably the best in Cabo.  Unbelievable conditioning.  I know that this board generally doesn't like Fazio, but this one is a gem.  

They are allowing guest play if you are a guest at Las Ventanas.  If you are not staying there, you may want to try anyway.  Tell them you are interested in joining or in buying real estate and you may get on.

Better than El Dorado?   I haven't played it but everyone I have talked to says El Dorado is spectacular.

Definately a better course.  El Dorado is great, but basically a resort course with some scenic ocean holes designed to please the tourists.  Querencia is a treat.  Every hole is unique.  Since Fazio did not have to consider housing (houses will not be on the course) the routing is outstanding.  About half the holes unfold down toward the ocean with long sweeping views.

My ranking for Cabo would be:

1. Querencia
2. Ocean Course
3. Eldorado
4. Cabo Real

Thanks to everyone for the info.  I will be staying at Las Ventanas and heard that they allow their guests to play so I'm hoping to get on.  Right now I'm planning on teeing it up at Querencia, the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol, and El Dorado.

Interesting... I've heard a bit about Querencia but you're the first to put it as clearly better than ElDorado.  I also find a bit more to like at ElDorado than you do, with the ocean holes being far more than just there to please the tourists... but to each his own.

Question in any case:  have you played the Weiskopf course at Cabo del Sol?  Damn, I really like the Nicklaus Ocean course, but in a lot of ways I find Weiskopf's course to be even better...   My ranking (leaving out Querencia, as I haven't played it) would go:

Those weren't the ocean holes (and scenic, off-the-ocean holes) that I played.

As I recall, I thought every hole on the ocean side was a beauty -- and not just because it was beautiful.

I'm with Dan on this 100%.  Hell, every course down there can be classified as a "resort course" with the obvious exception of Querencia, I guess.  I don't think this is a bad thing... It's not like either CdeS course or El Dorado or Palmilla is "dumbed down", I think.  The only one that I found to be like that was Cabo Real, and Cabo San Lucas CC was really the city muni.  

I found a LOT to like at El Dorado, ocean side and other side of the road.

You guys are right.  I used the wrong words when describing El Dorado.  It is much better than I made it sound. Querencia was such a great experience it momentarliy clouded my judgement.  As for the ocean holes comment about El Dorado...  they are incredibly beautiful, but not interesting as architecture goes.  I think that has something to do with the fact that they are going to build condos along those holes and that effected the design.  But it is still a ball to play and you should absolutely give it a go.    

I have not played the Weiskopf course so can't compare it to the Ocean.

YIKES!  They're gonna build condos on the ocean side of El Dorado?  This is sad... I guess I ought not to be surprised, but that will only slightly ruin things.

BTW, I found all sorts of architectural interest on those holes... the one par 5 sweeping down to the ocean was brilliant, as was the hole before it going around and over the scrub-brush.  The next two - I guess 8 and 9 - maybe those were "tourist eye candy" but 6 and 7 (if I have this right, I'm going off memory) were awesome.  I also found a lot to like on the back nine ocean holes...

I gotta play Querencia.  Next trip down, maybe this summer.

And next time down for you, you ought to give the CdeS Desert course a whirl.  There was one hell of a lot of good there... and it never gets close to the ocean at all.

I played Querencia in October and as stated it is spectacular. I drove up just to take a look at the project and was diverted to the salesman who gave me a full tour. They are in a financial mess and it seems are looking for a buyer and/or investor. They have only sold like 3 lots out of 250 in the two years it's been open. They have about 130 members with initiation over 100K. I just can't see how they are going to survive as a private club. I'd think that sooner or later they would have to open it up to the public somehow. It is just adjacent to Palmilla so maybe that would be a good partnership. Anyway, to make a long story short the salesman made arrangements for me to play at a nominal fee and it was worh every penny.
