That Sucks
« on: March 14, 2005, 09:22:13 AM »
For those of you going out to play B. Trails on the opening day it looks like you are going to be a little late:

ANOTHER FIRST

Bandon Trails, the eagerly anticipated new golf course at Bandon Dunes Resort won't open until June, but some big walleteers will get a sneak peek May 10-12, courtesy of Oregon Trout.

Joe Whitworth, who runs the fish conservation outfit, is touting an exclusive golf tournament he calls Fight for the Fish.

How exclusive? Eight foursomes, Joe says. Current captains include business long-ballers Tim Boyle, Hank Ashworth, Rocky Dixon and John von Schlegell. There are a couple of foursome spots still open. About $16,000 should get you in.

Why does that suck, and how will this change the experience for those who play in June?
You don't think Coore and the crew haven't hit a shot or two?

Steve:

People in here have also mentioned playing before the official June 1 opening, in outings put on / allowed by the course... it's no big deal, that's how these always work.  An "official opening day" never means that's the first time anyone's ever played the course - far from it.

Hey, I got in on a deal like that once, sort of... I played Tobacco Road with a friend who knows the owners, and it was in the infancy of our little internet group.  It was pre GCA, but some of the hard corps are still around.  There were only 4 of us on the whole course the January before official opening that coming spring.  We had a test run and then scheduled a group of about 20 internet GCA junkies to return in May.

It definitely DIDN'T SUCK!!!  ;) ;D 8)

Keiser employed the sneak preview with the BD and PD courses to a perfect pre opening marketing genius, IMHO.  What is the matter with getting the buzz out early in circles that will talk?  If it is great, and you know it is great, that is just smart business.  You do risk it getting panned by the same crowd, ahead of opening, which would be disastrous.  It is just that in the whole Keiser Oregon Coastal World of Golf, with the archies he employed, it is a no brainer.  And, here with the fund raiser, he is doing some good deeds for the sportsman.  What more could be fairer?

I got to play in the first un-official opening at Whistling Straits, which was a gift to me.  It was a Merrill Lynch thing.  That was just before the opening and two weeks before the women's open at BWR.  Those foursomes were moderately priced.  But, the next week they had another one of those pre-official openings to raise more charity money with George HW as guest of honor.  That one cost 30K a foursome.  Needless to say, I don't know anyone that would give me that! ::) ;D
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Keiser was actually one of the first few to get to play all 18 at Greywalls this past fall along with a couple of our members and a few guys in his entourage, as was Brad Klein (though not at the same time).  Otherwise the back nine would not have been played until this spring.  Grand openings are about ceremony and publicity, not about the first players.

That said, one cool thing about our first foursome on Greywalls' front nine last fall was that they were our longest standing members, and the first man to tee off made birdie on the first hole.  That wouldn't be as remarkable if he weren't 80 years old.

A bunch of people played Pacific Dunes before the official grand opening, too ... some preview rounds on 11 holes the previous fall, our invited guests for Archipalooza, and a press outing, among others.

The Grand Opening was still a great day and one that anyone who was there will remember for a while.
