Helicopter Composite

Forgive me if this is redundant but the upcoming meeting at Essex dredged up a memory.  I was dating a girl from South Orange while attending Union College and played golf once with her brother at a nearby course (can't remember which) and he conveyed the story of Nicklaus and another or others taking a helicopter trip to play a composite 18 best holes.  This brought to mind the thoughts, what were these 18 that Jack did and what would be my 18 in helicopter range?  I have to ponder a little longer.  It would have to be Greater NYC, no?

I vaguely remember a one day helicopter tour that was taken of 18 of the best holes in the Met district but it was Crenshaw who played each hole and then back in the helicopter and on to the next one. I think it might have been done with one of the major golf magazines.

It was Ben Crenshaw who did it & it was done for the Long Island newspaper Newsday. I will see if I can dig it out from the archives.

Anyone made any progress on this flight.  It would at least be a relief to remember what course it was I played.  If I remember the hole that was played was a par 5.

Probably the most famous par 5 in north Jersey is #17 at Baltusrol (Lower), over 600 yards long.  #4 (par 3) at B(L) is perhaps more famous.

I remember the course had been private but went public.  It seems it was very cheap to play.  Short distance from South Orange.

Essex County is private.  The Knoll (West) might be what
you're talking about, it's semi-private now and I think used to
be private, back when Jackie Gleason was a member.

Do any holes here ring a bell?


BTW, Baltusrol is only about 4-5 miles from S. Orange.

Not the Knoll, a friend of mine is the Super at the Knoll and I am fairly sure this was only an 18 hole course.

The Knoll (West) above (check out the aerial) might not be
affiliated with the East any more, I don't know (making it an
18-hole complex, not 36).

EDIT:  they are affiliated, thought only the West has members.

Found this on an area web site, I think it was this Francis A. Byrne GC?

"Ah how quickly the Essex County Country Club members are to separate themselves from the Francis Byrne golf course. Here is is a History 101 lesson. The Essex County Country Club use to own two courses, the East (present Essex county CC) and the West (Francis Byrne GC). Financial difficulties forced the Club to sell one of its courses to the county, that being Francis Byrne. The FBGC as it stands now is in horrible shape if one were to compare it to when it was a CC; however, let's not forget where the course originated."
