Another old unknown

Scott's absence (no AOTDs) led me back to cleaning out my unknown file. This is another 1938 aerial taken on Long Island. I believe the location is not far from Westhampton.

Was Desmond Muirhead alive back then?? ;)

Seriously, that bunker complex that seems to be a "hell's half acre" sort of thing on the par five is unique to my eyes.

At first, I thought it had to be something by Dev Emmett, but I'd bet even money that Tillinghast was there.  In particular, those elongated greenside bunkers are something I've seen him do a lot of.

No idea on the course, but that's the first place I'd check.  Rick Wolffe...did Tillie do any work out on the end of the island?

Mike,
You should have asked for better odds and made a wager. I found this one by trolling along the S coast of LI  using Mapquest and found it to be Southward Ho!, a 1924 AWT design. Stephen Kay remodeled 7 holes in 1990.

The circular bunkers have been removed but most of the other bunkers seem pretty close to where they were originally.

My thinking was the same as Mike's, those bent elbow bunkers and elongated greenside bunkers looked like Tillie. And the hell's half acre hole both reminded me of Tillinghast and threw me off. The dome effect threw me off - it must have been a real late-in-the-afternoon design.

Faithful readers will remember this antique.

The two water features (canal in the middle and stream on the left) were so prominent that I noticed them just a few hundred yards away from Southward Ho. Could it have been the club's original course? Nothing remains of it.

Amazing what you can do with almost no money and a potato field.  All they  need is a few trees? :-X

Does anyone else get like teary-eyed nostalgic and wistful looking at these?

Does anybody know if anybody ever designed a Northward Ho!  If so, where is it?
