Golf's Filter or Duffer's Headache

(1/2) > >>

A_Clay_Man:
Inspired by the "Tillie Tour" thread, and the alleged removal of many bunkers in the DH zone, I find myself wondering if there's more meaning in these "remedies" and how it effected the evolution of GCA.

Is it possible that average run of the mill DH bunker was a form of filter? To somehow seperate, both mentally and physically, the would-be golfer, from the enthusiasts, that "we" (use the term loosely) seem to have cultivated into, today's customer?

Even on Pacific Grove's front nine (short; 3 par 3's), bunker removal occured, and from all I could ascertain, the only justification was speed of play. Which I imply, as one example, of one form, of what I would consider, a DH bunker. Now, I doubt that Tillie visited PG, but he could have, and if he didn't, it's not hard to assume his "tour" influenced, more than just the courses he visited.

Thoughts Questions?

P.s. I know I can be on the esoteric side, so I really want to know is: Did making the game easier for the duffer, lower the expectations of performance and did that then cause the gca to be "dumbed down"?

TEPaul:
Next week why don't we all debate the theory it was really A.W. Tillinghast who was responsible for 9/11?

A_Clay_Man:
Tom- I'm not trying to place blame on anyone, especially Tillie.

I just find that the sport today, misses the mark on the intellectual and emotional inspiration, that keeps people coming back. Maybe it's pure economics, but maybe, just maybe, there's this teeny tiny variable that acted as a catalyst and caused people to value, and consequently construct, courses based on "How pretty" versus core golfing principles.

What I realy hope to do is prove that the BIG WORLD THEORY, is nothing more than a form of socialist plot to excuse poor gca. ;D

Mike_Cirba:
Tom Paul is correct in his assertion that Tillinghast was responsible for all sorts of atrocities.

I've been doing some research and as you can clearly see in the illustration below, here is Tillinghast on a visit to Canada, where a particular club wouldn't let him remove Willie Park Jr.'s bunkers at less than 175 yards from the tee.

Like many courses of the time, it was built next to adjacent railroad tracks, and in the case in question, Tillie had tied the Green Chairman's daughter to the tracks demanding more bunker removal as ransom for her safety, until local authorities intervened.

I ask a humorous question and two posts later it becomes an assertion. You're beginning to think and act more like Tom MacWood every day!  ;)
