Austin golf

Sorry for the travel-related thread, but...

I'm headed to Austin for a couple days later this week.  Golf is unlikely as I'll be knee-deep in music in the afternoons and nights, but just in case I wake up early one morning...  Any recommendations for fun golf in the area?

Just to keep my perfect record of non-architectural posts, how about Tex-Mex and BBQ places?

Welcome to SXSW, and to my town:

- Architecturally relevant:

- Austin Golf Club, Crenshaw's design and home course.

- Best public in town is Roy Kizer.

BBQ: Stubbs, Sam's, Tom's, Ruby's, John Mueller's, for serious eatin'; touristy places: Iron Works, and either of the County Lines. There are dozens more.

Tex-Mex: Matt's El Rancho, Las Mananitas, El Guero, El Azteca, Nueva Leon, Tres Amigos, and for ritzy, Fonda San Miguel. There are several dozen more.

Be sure to stop by La Zona Rosa, Continental Club, and Threadgill's, that's OLDE AUSTIN - the history of Austin Music can be found there.

BBQ....the Salt Lick outside of town is unbelievably good.

Golf...Horseshoe Bay is fun but not so flash really, Barton Creek I've only played the Crenshaw Course and it's maybe a bit too minimalist. Austin CC is fantastic if you can find a member.

Salt Lick ain't what it used to be; VERY touristy, and there is so much better in Austin proper, beautiful place though.

Matt & Steve,

Thanks for the affirmation.  This must be barbecue day on GCA, since we've already discussed the Atlanta joints.  If barbecue acumen was handicapped, I'd be a +man.  So as to not alienate our South Carolina contingent, Maurice's PiggyPark (home of the flying pig)in West Columbia aint' bad either.  The mecca remains Bozo's in Mason, TN.  

Gratuitous architectural reference:  I like hogback greens.

Ken,
I'm biased, AGC is head and shoulders above anyone around, but not really an option for you anyways.  The courses at Barton Creek are all decent, but  they'll be packed with SXSW going on, not sure though.  If you get an afternoon take the time to head outta town for Burnet and hit Delaware Springs, great little course.  Roy Kiser is a decent little track as well, haven't been there in a long time though.  As for food, take time to hit Huts for a burger and there a tons of good BBQ places, County Line and Salt Lick are my favs, and out of the way place for Tex Mex is Rosie's (My Fav) best tamales around.  Have fun at SXSW, I know I will

Chuy's for Tex Mex and Shady Grove for good general stuff.Both just south of downtown,plenty of hippies,etc.Cross the Congress Ave bridge and turn right.By the way,at certain times of the year the bats fly from under the bridge at dusk and its very interesting.

George Blunt,
I'll drop you an email; great to hear from you.  You need to meet and play with Tom Huckaby -- it will be the "Aw Shucks Championship"...or maybe the "Self Deprecation Open".  Listening to you two talk, one would think my mother and daughter could give you each 5 a side and whip you soundly.  My mom doesn't play, and my daughter is about an 8-handicap (8 per hole, that is).

If I play somewhere, I'll post a report.
