Title: BUDA XX1 The Professor and the Cotswolds.
Post by: Tony_Muldoon on January 16, 2023, 03:08:54 PM

BUDA XX1 Return to the Cotswolds 15th to 18th September 2023

£30 deposit required to secure a place, see next post for costs and how to pay.

The reason why Buda this year will be better than the Ryder Cup, is that although both are established stellar transcontinental Golf matches, featuring crack athletes who have been training all year for this, we have 4 days; one more than the lazy pro’s!!!!

GCA has a long association with these courses and collectively they form a distinct group of ‘natural’ courses that all participants here should see.

Friday 15th  September AM 9.12  2 tees  PM 1.44 4 tees
Cleeve Hill.
IF YOU PARK AT CLEEVE HILL YOU MUST REGISTER YOUR CAR IN THE CLUBHOUSE.

One of the wonders of golf.  The scale is epic and the joy unconfined.

Saturday 16th

Sunday 17th
9.15 Stranahan Course. Players Club
In this profile Sean writes “I think it rather obvious that I am impressed with the Stranahan Course.  The greens alone are worth a visit and I think one of the best sets I have seen in England.”

On this evening we will take a MiniBus into nearby Chipping Sodbury. At extra cost.

Monday 18th
9.15 Minchinhampton Old.
Another ‘Common Ground’ course.  Lovely just lovely and to think this course was once considered to be the first inland venue for The Open Championship!

This time the profile is by someone who used to be on GCA Ran Morrisett.  He says it has that joy to be alive feeling and if you don’t get this course you don’t get golf.

Accommodation 3 nights. Fri/Sat/Sun

Staying at “The Dormie” Players Club, Codrington, Bristol BS37 6RZ
https://www.theplayersgolfclub.com/ (https://www.theplayersgolfclub.com/)
Evening meals are not included in the price but there’s a full menu available on site. Our host, course architect and GCA participant, Adrian Stiff will be around and loves to talk Golf.
Other features available to us include Darts, Pool and I think we should have a knockout tournament for each running across the three nights.
There will be an extra charge for those wishing to join a MiniBus for a Sunday night Curry offsite.

Notes
Initially max of 28 players. I can look into more tee times if demand requires.

This will be one of the most social BUDA’s if everyone stays in the same place! Modern Rooms and fantastic social facilities all in the same building. Full dining on site. We also have options to use a simulator, play Pool, or even the 9 hole par 3 course.  There will be a Poker Game Sunday night for those who fancy their luck. There is travel between courses involved, but you can’t have everything!

Note Cleeve Hill and Painswick are strenuous walks.   The other two are ideal walks.
Note the rates quoted in next post, for the last 3 days, are for 36, but at those prices some may prefer to only play 18 on those days.  The same applies for those who may wish to join us for the day for one or both rounds. With plenty of notice we can get more tee times.
Only the Players Club have Carts and Electric Trolleys.  The others have limited no’s of Pull Trolleys and Cleeve have 4 Electric Trolleys.  Please contact the Clubs direct if you want to reserve any of these.

Note there is travel involved.
Distances from The Players Club
90 mins from Heathrow, 50 from Bristol Airport.
Allow
Cleeve Hill 1 hour,
Painswick 50 mins
 Minchinhampton Old  40.

Looking forward to the annual slugfest! (Pun intended).

How to pay

There are 3 ways of getting the Monies to me.
1
Those with a sterling account can pay directly into my bank -  please email me at Spangles60@outlook.com and I’ll send you my account details (same as last year for those who used that method). I’m not happy putting it up on a discussion board.
NB this proved a real hassle for those trying from overseas last year so see option 3 below as alternative. I do have an example of a form that was successfully used that  I can send you. It seems the International Banking system calls things by different names each side of the Ocean so care is needed.  IM me if you’d like to try it.

2
Paypal.

These days Paypal don’t make it easy to select a ‘Gift’ to ‘Friends and relations’ on Paypal “loophole” of sending money as a gift FOC has passed. Unless you get it just right it  seems like they are now adding a 5% charge for these transfers.
DO NOT USE THE EMAIL ADDRESS POSTED ON HERE ON A PREVIOUS YEAR  – see below.
You still need to send it as a Gift to Friends and Family – not paying for goods and services - and they don’t make it easy to find the right buttons to press.
Here’s guidance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ_3UM5lEWo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ_3UM5lEWo)
If anyone successfully manages this please add refinements in a post below.
The correct address to use is
hstjet@googlemail.com    Do not shorten this.
3
Wise Bank offer easy (and cheap) transfers between countries and currencies.

I’ve opened an account and you should be able to find me at Spangles60@outlook.com.  NB I’ve yet to try this so please IM or email me and we can work through it together.
NOTE if you are happy to transfer me Dollars/Euros/etc I will convert monies received at the end of each month.  BUT if the pound rises (falls about laughing) you will still be liable for any debit / or conversely I’ll refund any Credit when we meet.

If anyone else has other methods I'll look into them.

Finally If you sadly have to withdraw, your deposit will serve the very excellent purpose of toasting you.

Good luck.

See post 3 we now have 28 names but looking to add one more time - possibly only for the PM's.  Will confirm this week.

If interested please put your hand up and you'll be listed as reserves in order of replies on here.

Sad some familiar names can't make it but it will be great to see some returnees after too long and welcome 4 newcomers.
Kudos to Paul Graham coming all the way from Melbourne!!!!

Also Mr Boon is hoping we can get 4 ball of players to bring their Hickories?
So far James and I need at least 2 more?
I suggest they are best Suited to the  Stranahan and Minchinhampton courses?

I have UK based tour rehearsals starting late September so this would be perfect for me... Sadly I have lost my golf game the last few years (not that it was ever that strong) so I'll be working to regain some form before I commit to any matches. I will be thinking of you all.

Lloyd

I'm sure the RoW team (or whatever we're called this year) would be delighted to have you. Based on recent performances of the RoW team, and the US teams abiding ability to wangle the handicaps in their favour, I'm not sure your lack of form would make much difference.

I look forward to seeing you in September.

I'm keeping the weekend free for it. Hopefully to also play the Stranahan on Sunday if you have space. Just can't make either Friday or Monday.

I'm coming for Saturday (Painswick) and Sunday (Stranahan) with one nights single accommodation at The Players (if available)

£35 + £45 + £90 = £170.

If you agree with that, i'll make the transfer.

Tony,
Payment sent. I'm signed up for all of the golf and single accommodation. So I sent 432 pounds less 30 deposit = 402. I rounded up to 410 just in case conversion rate changes.

Thanks for the great organization.

Monies starting to err trickle in...hint, hint But thanks to the early payers who earn nothing more interesting than my thanks.

Meanwhile we had Giles and Jason slated as Captains. Sadly no Jason this year and as its likely a ROW team I'd like to nominate Enno who has yet to serve but has been to the last few so knkows what to expect.

Thoughts?

Alternatives?

Was scheduled to have Hernia surgery July 24 to insure that I would be in shape for BUDA. Unfortunately, It has had to be rescheduled to sometime in early August. I fear that is not enough time to insure that I will be golf ready and sadly must withdraw. I have been fan of the Cotswolds and have wanted to play Michenhampton and Cleeve Hill. Another time! Have fun for me.

Please pay this weekend. Expressions of intent cut no ice.

PS - a tip for those playing on the Friday at Cleeve. Allow plenty of time. The traffic in and around Cheltenham/Bishops Cleeve and the phrase ‘rush hour’ go together. It can be slow and congested and there aren’t too many alternative routes.

As stated yesterday you are the only person who can't understand what to pay as set out above.

Send correct amount today if you wish to participate.

By my calculations I have sent you the correct amount.

If you have a query with this it would be reasonable to reply to my messages and we can resolve things amicably.

Tony, Giles and myself are in the proces of setting up the matches for next week. Can everybody who's not yet in the WhatsApp group please contact Tony about this? Also: can those who play only one round per day please indicate if they wish to play the AM or the PM round? Please let us know in the discussion group or through WhatsApp! The more clarity we have about this, the better. We wish to avoid last-minute scrambling of matches as much as possible!

Well that's another BUDA over and a very successful event it was too. Lots of old faces although some couldn't make it and a few new faces who will hopefully come again.

The Players club was an inspired choice to base ourselves. The whole group together (apart from Bogey who perhaps wisely decided not to introduce his wife to the general rabble) helped greatly with the logistics and the socialising and Adrian was a brilliant host. Thanks to him and his staff. As for the courses;

Cleeve - I didn't play Cleeve due to height issues but from talking to the rest of the group quite a few had this as their favourite course. A combination of openess, elevational changes and interesting greens seemed to do the trick.

Painswick - I'd played it once before about 11 years ago and while I could remember a lot of the holes there were a few very good holes I'd forgotten about. Some inspired golf design only let down by the hole crossing and more tellingly the public footpaths going across the course from all sorts of directions. The fact that we played on a Saturday only exacerbated the problem. If only they could ring-fence the course to stop the ramblers.........

Stranahan - Adrian's design and the second course at the Players club. There's a lot to like about the course with the greens being the star of the show. Built by means of landfill, I think I'm right in saying the detailed design was made up on the hoof as the landfill went in (Adrian - correct me if I'm wrong). There are a number of blind or semi-blind shots which you wouldn't normally expect on a modern course but that just adds to the attraction. A course that takes a bit of knowing, and no bad thing that. I'd definitely like to play it again.

Minch - the ultimate in rustic golf. A huge open expanse with cows dotted about here and there. Where Painswick and to a lesser extent Stranahan were a bit stressful due to the proximity of other golfers and ramblers, Minch was in comparison relatively stress free. The rough was low thanks to the cows, so no ball hunting, and there was rarely anyone in danger of being hit. In terms of the design, the par 3's were the highlight although the other holes also have interest but really it is the open expanse that makes it.

So to sum up, well done and thank you to Tony in organising, thanks also to Enno for bring BUDA into the digital age, thanks to Giles for proving that when it comes to Captaincy less is more  ;)  and finally once again thanks to Adrian and his team and also the other clubs for their hospitality.

Really good to get back to Buda after four years away. Great organization by Tony. More comments later, but agree that Adrian Stiff and his club were a fine base for the event. I, too, would like another trip around the Stranahan course.

For me, a real highlight was one of the new participants - Tony's dog Lupin. Seen here at Painswick.
