Title: Courses or Trips you are most looking forward to playing in 2023?
Post by: Jeff Schley on December 08, 2022, 08:59:27 AM
2022 was probably the first real time to get back into traveling for golf. So 2023 is still going to be a big year (unless we get a recession) for golfing.  What courses or trips that you have planned are you most looking forward to playing in 2023?
Me, I have a trip to Japan in September that was postponed since 2020. Will be something I really have been dreaming about.

I managed to dodge Covid until May of this year. I had a trip to Inverness that had to be canceled as a result and will look forward to rescheduling in 23. Hopefully I can pair it up with a visit to Scioto for an Andrew Green doubleheader.

The only trip in 2023 I've tentatively booked is September at the Carmel Peninsula to (finally) play Pebble Beach (I've previously walked much of it) and some others booked through the resort (Old Del Monte, Bayonet & Black Horse, Spyglass, Pacific Grove, and Peter Hay.  May try to squeeze something like Sharp Park or Harding Park in on front or back end.

All pre-brags must be followed by post-brags with pics. I personally prefer bragging in real time.

David might get mad at me for saying this, but Sharp Park is not worth the squeeze.  You'd have a ton more fun playing Lincoln Park if the other San Fran delights aren't on the ticket.

As for myself i'll be in LA next June to take in a practice round at LACC, hoping to squeeze some golf in around So Cal, and perhaps even Central Cali

Amen ! Sharp Park has great possibility for the future but not so hot now.

I’d try Pasatiempo, Corica Park or The Presidio as alternatives

Thanks Kalen and DFarron,

Probably a game day decision based on flights, etc.

Is it the condition of Sharp Park that's in question?  Or just not enough evidence of Dr. Mac left?

After my epic 27 courses played in England, Scotland, NI, and Donegal Ireland in 2022, my 2023 must playlist is rather tame:  Iona and Lofoten.

There is a logic to the list. I’m going to help my 86 year-old Aunt travel to her annual religious retreat on the Isle of Iona. Getting to Iona requires a train, 2 busses, and a ferry - she’s too old to be doing that so I’m flying over with her and then renting a car and driving her to the ferry.  Might as well play Iona since I’m going to be there.

While she’s doing her two week retreat, I will fly off and do some sightseeing in Norway, Finland, Estonia and of course play Lofoten.

There are 8 states where I am yet to play golf - they include Conn, Del, Maine, NH, RI, Vermont and WV.  My wife has suggested a driving trip next spring playing in each of them.

I'm sure I'll be asking for recommendations on where to play.

I'm only 80...the clock is ticking.

Twelve days in Fife, six in Nairn, a month near Dornach and two weeks in Golspie.

Missed out on the St. Andrews early ballot, so no golf booked yet.

I've had this one in mind since before the pandemic and hope to do it in Sept 2023. I've played a dozen + of the well known Surrey heaths and this will be a trip to see some of the ones I've missed on prior visits. Also hope to see the big guys in Kent. These will all be new to me. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Was surprisingly pleased with Slieve Russell.  Somewhat American parkland course but a cool routing around a feature lake with quite a diverse set of holes.  Maybe just behind Adare?  But better than Dromoland, Juliet, K Clubs, Killeen and Lough Erne.

You can try the wonderfully named Bushfoot. A 9 holer a few miles east of Portrush. I haven't played it, but took a quick look...and I would play it when next back in the area.

TOC (fingers crossed for ballot or queue)
Elie
Gullane
North Berwick
Dunbar
Kilspindie

What?  No Castle Course?

 ;D

BTW, keeping on topic, my wife and I are spending all of August and September in Scotland.  Twelve days in Fife, six in Nairn, a month in a caravan park outside Dornoch and two weeks in Golspie.

No tee times, but I want to replay Lundin, Crail and probably Elie. Missed on the lottery for TOC, but will enter the ballot. Zero interest in Castle or Kingsbarns.

Kinda want to play Duff House Royal while we're in Nairn.  Been a long time since we played Boat so that might be an option.

Up north I want to get up past Wick at least once. Thurso, Reay, Durness?

Maybe Portmahomack at least once.

Am in Thailand now, in Pattaya.  Lined up four rounds here with Golf Asian, three at Old Siam courses, one at Phoenix Gold.  Moving to Hua Hin and will play Banyan and Black Mountain.  Will also try to play Royal Hua Hin.  Have other golf lined up at Nikanti and Suwan.

Flying home February 4th, then heading to Australia from February 25th to March 27th, mostly around Mornington Peninsula (19th trip).  Happy to meet up and play in that area.  Will mostly play at National Golf Club.

Going trekking in Japan in late May.  First part of June is open.  May bring golf clubs.  Solo golf travel in Japan has some challenges, so I generally enjoy other pursuits.

Back in Washington State, hope to use my senior punch cards at Gold Mountain Olympic and maybe travel to Gamble Sands and Wine Valley.

Been to New York City a couple of times and might try Beth Page Black and Red this year.

Have toyed with idea of playing a couple of Mike Strantz courses in Virginia.

Reminder about Pasatiempo:

The front nine holes will be closed for restoration from April 2023 until December 2023, while the back nine holes will remain open. All eighteen holes will be open for play from December 2023 to April 2024. The back nine holes will be closed for restoration from April 2024 to December 2024, while the front nine holes will be open for play. The restoration will be completed with all eighteen holes open in December 2024.

Thurso, Reay, Durness YES! Each a piece unto itself, all well worth the journey. The drive to Durness is spectacular.

If I had two months I would definitely spend some of that time island hopping!

You're going to Fife for the first time and playing two manufactured modern courses but none of the St Andrews courses, or any of Fife's other traditional links?
