Now that's a very funny post, lol
-
I'm playing Rustic as a single on Sunday but the rest of my tee time is sold out. Sorry John. :)

How long here John?

Halloween is not out of the equation. The day after I play with you sounds about right.

Just forwarded this to all my buds.
Perfectly said.
Enjoy the trip.

I'll be in LA on Oct 10-12.
Happy to host you at Top Golf in El Segundo if you buy the chicken wings.
The holes there are oversized so an ace is definitely in the cards.

I’m only a nine minute Uber ride away. That would be hilarious. Earlier this month I played Glenview on my blue skies and great bounces tour through Chicago. Those who I asked spoke highly of you. Congrats.
-
If you don't get on a country club or two try Angeles National a Nicklaus course in a canyon in the Valley and the site of my sole hole-in-one. Very challenging and fun to play. 8)

Any luck, John? Rough time of year with lots of aeration taking place throughout SoCal right now. (At least among publics.)

Rustic, Riviera and Bell-Air so far. Blue skies and great bounces.

Toss in a Soule Park round or three.
Nice town to boot.
$25 after 1:00

That seems unbelievable to me and mostly open on the sheet.
aerification?

I hope Kav plays everywhere he wants in SoCal. There used to be way more access threads back in the day and some of the approaches were noteworthy. There is a story about a U.S. course rater who feigned a British accent in an effort to find his way onto one of the iconic courses thinking it would give him a leg up. :)

Could be aeration. Make sure to play early at Soule or it’s a long round. Hoping someone gives Mr. Kavanaugh a chance to wear slacks rather than shorts while in town.
-
I'm in town for all of October at a minimum. With my phantom base being LAX Soule Park is a bit far but I misplaced my no. Set it up and I'll show. I'd love to find out if Westchester is the best Chester. I can ride my bike there.
Speaking of bikes. The bicycle scene along the beach has to be one of the finest in the world. If anyone wants to meet for a ride let me know. I haven't buddy upped on a bike in over 20 years.
-
Not sure what Hurricane Ian did to JK, but I like what I read. They say that mean pets get nice in their final years. Hope that JK has plenty of years left to be this nice and droll.

It says Soule Park is 90-100min drive from Santa Monica. Is it worth the hike out there?

It takes a big set of balls in my mind to ask someone for access to their club. I'll have my pro call the clubs pro but that's as far as I would ever go.

When you bring something to the table you can ask anyone to pull up a chair.

My son and I still talk about the 36 holes we played with John a couple years ago -- I highly recommend it.
-
I’m seeing the Sasha Berliner Group tonight at Sam First. A Jazz Club oddly close to LAX. Tickets and drinks on me if anyone wants to show.
-
Barney,
I just fired up Google Maps...
Looks like its only about 10 minutes longer to drive to Torrey Pines from LAX, than it is to drive to Soule Park...
I know you're a huge TPS fan...
P.S. If you wanna catch some good pigskin this weekend, Utah is playing UCLA in the Rose Bowl on Saturday, both are ranked in the top 20 ATM..

Well given he's there for a month, it would seem it might be nice to escape LAX.
Ojai and Soul Park are quite nice and on the way to a lot of nice places.
-
No doubt that I’ll make it to Soule Park. I’m just filling days.
-
What are you doing out there for a month John?

My daughter got a house on the beach. I’m here till she kicks me out. It’s an amazing lifestyle that doesn’t compliment the lethargic.
-
I am telling you add Angeles National. It's miles closer than anything mentioned and it's better than Soule and I like Soule. It ain't cheap but you can afford it. 8)
-
I've always been intrigued by Palos Verdes, Los Verdes, and Rolling Hills. If you play any of them please report back.
-
Barney, I sense a new lightness in your demeanor - you wear it well. I am most impressed by your daughter’s hospitality! No doubt a testament to the old man. Have fun.
-
I have a game at Olivas Links on Sunday. Very excited.
In the meantime I plan to continue my deep dive into the LA Jazz scene. Anyone want a piece of that ride let me know.
-
The most interesting thing, to me, about this thread is that its author would have been the very first to absolutely eviscerate anyone attempting to do the same thing—gratuitously seeking access.
You have to love the irony.

Hoov,
Let's not loose sight of my original post above. I'm letting my friends know I'm available without the uncomfortable nature of an possible unwanted direct contact. I doubt that even pre-not-me would find fault in that.
Give me a week or so and I'll have some bike boes and jazz buds in the fold. We all benefit.
-
Barney it was lovely to meet you for a game at Rustic this past weekend!
For the jazz scene, go up to the top of mulholland and beverly glen to a place called Vibrato. Whoever's playing there is always worth a visit!

John,
Let’s hear where you have played so far….
-
I played Rustic, Riviera and Bel-Air last weekend. Olivas Links this Sunday. Living the life of a non affiliated golfer in LA is illuminating.
-
I understand that I need to embrace beach life since golf is sparse in the big city. I bought the bike but now I need the bod. Thinking of taking next on the volleyball court. Lord knows I can’t get an invite no matter how long I stare.
Hey, fat dude, yeah you on the three wheel trike. How’s your overhead serve? Wicked dude...I got next.

Always fascinated by golf in LA but never played when I was there. How was Bel-Air?
-
JK,
Are you going to head up to Ventura County and take in some LPGA golf?
-
I looked for flaws at Bel-Air and found none. Best work I’ve seen out of Doak.
-

I got a Dodgers game on my spectator grid.
-
Played Olivas Links yesterday. Plaudits to Forrest for providing a subtle layout that optimized challenge and pace of play. Olivas Links at $53 including cart on a Sunday should be in every value discussion across the country.
-
Any noteworthy buddy-ups?
-
I’ve played with Tal Oz and Mark Kiely. I met Luke, Al and Buck. Many of you probably know Buck from his barefoot Saturday game at Rustic.

If you are still here the 24th or after, I would love to host you at Victoria Club in Riverside.

You can count on it. I will stop at no lengths for a good ass kicking.

What are you playing to nowadays?
If you are able to make it out, we should invite a few others from the group. Victoria is a blast to play. Very "sporty." :-)

I’m a vanity 5. Kinda sad really.

Pelican Hill on Wednesday with an ole civilian bud. Catch me on the next episode of RTOC.
-
Fun times at Olivas yesterday and an impressive performance by the out-of-towner with a nice 73 that easily could've been a few better.
Great meeting you, John!
-
Just finished Pelican Hill South after seeing the Dodgers last night. The Dodgers game may be the longest walk in golf. My habit of not watching a game I am attending is not unfamiliar to my fellow “residents”.
As I dive deep into beach culture I am learning one indisputable truth. A beach is never just a beach. Pelican Hill once again seems to have been molded for those who use it. A perfect blend of luxury and exhilaration. Makes you want to put on your pretty pants and dance. Loved it.
-
The first hole I ever played with John everybody in the group made birdie.
I wish that upon everyone who gets the opportunity to repeat.

I got that reference. ;-)

John and I just booked the 12:50 "Deal" time on TeeOff.com for Ojai Valley Inn this Sunday. Other two spots are still available. They say $97.99 each but promo code FALL20 makes it around $78 pp. Go grab em and join us!

Impressive place. I live 10 minutes away and have to pinch myself, as compared to where I started in life.
I'm a little surprised you loved the golf course. I like it enough, don't love it (not a big fan of the North)- but despite the proximity I rarely play there.

John,
With your love of TPS and now Pelican Hill, are you going to take a day and get up to Sandpiper before Doak does a Joan Rivers to it?
-
I wish I had seen Bel-Air before Doak. The ignorance of the negative reviews of Sandpiper has influenced my love of it sight unseen. No doubt I’d be equally ignorant in my praise. Wouldn’t say no but north of Santa Barbara is LA light at best.
-
I’ve been invited to join Dave Ober at Victoria Club in Riverside tomorrow at noon. As part of my fulfillment is Dave’s request to bring along a couple of GCAers. First come first serve. Let me know.
You will see shots that you ain’t never seen. I played Victoria yesterday with Dave. It’s like playing Riviera on the south side of Chicago with longtime friends. Best BLT I ever had.
Note: Postponed

Hopefully when things settle down a bit!

Had a BLAST with John on Wednesday at Victoria. The guy can golf his ball! We played as a foursome (with one walker) in 2 hours 40 minutes, and I think he was a bit ... ahem ... surprised by the pace of play. Don't think he brought his best game. Still managed to shoot his handicap. Would hate to play him in a money match giving him full pops, I'll tell you that for sure!

I have a member card at Arroyo Trabuco and Tijeras Creek in South OC and would be happy to show you around either if we can find time before you leave.

Thanks. It took Andy 19 years after he got his hammer. The execution of an escape isn’t always the result of good planing. I’ll keep in touch cause I got no plans.
That said. I’ll always owe the people of California for their stewardship of this taste of nature and culture. Oh, thanks for leaving the HOV lanes open for me. Makes Uber feel like getting a comped caddie.
-
;D JK,
The people want to know, are you posting scores for your handicap index or just enjoying the california dreaming' vibe?
-
I’ve gone from a 4 to a 6 on this trip. Must be the poa.

I was hosted today by a fine fellow. While he didn’t have a hole in one, two of his friends did. The first was a 298 yd par 4. The second a 200 yd par 3. If you would like one yourself, just call.

Woah! That is epic. An hole in one on a par 4 is so rare and to have another guy get a hole in one for the same group. Send that in to Golf mag or Golf Digest as that is worthy of a write up.

If there is such thing as a hidden gem, or at least a shadowed gem, Behr's Victoria is one! Get past that first hole and it's psycho fun. That 15th green was once audaciously defended by a wall of fronting trees. Never seen anything like it. It's been 20 years since I was there - is this still true?

The 15th exists in all its glory. Playing in the group of oddly talented golfers I was the only one to go safe left and ended up with the shortest missable birdie putt. Besides the trees the fronting landform is audacious with a gobbledy hazard tight left.
Speaking of the first. The dude made triple and was even par after the second. 7 - 1 is a rare start.

Yes, and it's probably the worst feature on the golf course. Makes the hole extremely easy for today's long hitters and stupid for short hitters -- especially when you combine it with a fairway bunker that is a mere 240 yards from the tee with an elevated tee shot. Even modest length drivers carry it with ease, and it removes the angle for the shorter hitter to play to the alternate fairway to the left. The hole needs an enema.
-
A cool under the radar club I'd be proud to hang my hat at.
