Title: Craigie Hill GC - GCA Clan Gathering
Post by: Niall C on January 18, 2020, 07:13:51 AM
On another thread I made the suggestion of a clan gathering at Craigie Hill GC in the Spring. For those that don't know, Craigie Hill is an 18 hole course on the outskirts of Perth that was designed by Willie Fernie in 1911. It's the course that you see playing over and around a hill on the left hand side of the A9 when travelling north from Glasgow.

Before I make enquiries, I'd like to get an idea on likely numbers and possible dates. So far the following have expressed an interest;

FBD
Michael Graham
Mark Pearce
Jon Wigget
Ari Techner
Duncan Cheslett
David McIntosh

If anyone else is interested can they please let me know. In terms of dates, if anyone has any particular thoughts then again please let me know. The cost is likely to be in the region of £30 which might include coffee/roll (to be confirmed).

Niall,

I’m late to put my hand up for this, but would be keen to join if there’s still space. Did you get a date set for the gathering?

Good man, happy to add you to the list. Nothing booked as yet as still mulling over best time to play. It's not as easy as arranging a game on a links as you're not as certain of ground conditions at that time of year as you know. I'll probably wait a few more weeks and see what the forecast is for early/middle March. How does that sound ?

Niall,

Sounds good. The earlier in March the better for me as may struggle to get out for a game towards the end of the month!

Folks

Given the extremely wet weather, and the forecast for more of the same over the next couple of weeks, I think I'm going to give organising a game at Craigie Hill a miss at least until later in the year. I'll keep you posted.

Sensible idea Niall. Given recent weather it'll be months before the course is in condition to warrant a visit. We're surely due a dry spring and summer. Hope (and rain) springs eternal.

Yup. The Edinburgh Road out of Perth is like driving up a river. I blame the Coonsil!

Maybe its an attempt to stop southerners from entering the Highlands bringing all that rain with them. No rain up here just liquid sunshine ;)

Folks

I'm resurrecting this thread and the idea of a Clan Gathering at Craigie Hill. I was going to organise one back in 2020 but the pandemic intervened. Can anyone who might be interested please let me know. Can you also give me an idea of when might suit both in terms of when during the year and also whether it would you'd prefer weekday or weekend.

Thanks

Niall,

I'd be interested - particularly if it was a Sunday. I'd be coming up on the train via Silloth on the Saturday and staying with the boy off Byers Road so a lift would be useful!  ;)

I didn’t realise at the time, but that was to have been the last time I would drive up the Edinburgh Road from Perth. Pretty much closed down our office that week and proceeded to work from home for the next year.
Count me in for a wee re-visit to the home town of Fiction Factory!

I’d be interested Niall if the date works for when I’m up in St Andrews.

Niall,

Sounds good, count me in. I’m always flexible with days so can do weekends or weekdays, whichever is the consensus.

Has there been a clan gathering since Goswick in the depths of winter a few years ago?

Niall,

I’m still interested in this if the dates work out too. Weekends definitely better for me but go with the majority.

Michael - I think that’s right. That great day at Goswick was 5 years ago now…how time flies!

Niall,

Would be happy to join you all.  It’s a easy trip from Montrose.  Weekends are always easiest but wouldn’t count out a weekday if I had enough notice.

I'll be coming through the UK in late April / Early May. I don't see any date yet, so will check back and see if it works.

There's an Open comp at Craigie Hill on 13 August.  I'm thinking of entering.  Anyone else interested?
