Title: 2014 PHOTOS OF THE YEAR THREAD - WINNER POSTED
Post by: Sven Nilsen on December 07, 2014, 02:52:36 PM
That time of year again.

Welcome to the 2014 Photos of the Year Contest.

Here are the rules:

1.  One submission per contestant (for posts with multiple photos, unless you designate your entry we're going to take the first photo);

2.  Photos have to have been taken in 2014 (with the caveat that any photos from 2013 that were taken after last year's contest ended are admissible);

3.  Submission period will run until December 21st (photo must be posted, not linked);

4.  Following the submission period, the Committee will choose five photos as the finalists (to be posted on the 23rd), in each of two divisions, (A) one for golf course related photos, and (B) one for the people and traditions of the game;

5.  Voting on the finalists will be open to all with one vote per participant (votes can be submitted by PM or by post on this thread any time between the 23rd and the 31st);

6.  The winners will be announced on January 1st and will receive a small token prize in recognition of this incredible achievement; and

7.  You're allowed to nominate a picture taken by someone else, and that picture is eligible for the contest and does not count as the photographer's submission.  It does count as your submission.  The prize would go to the actual photo taker, not the submitter.

As always, these rules are subject to change at any time due to the whim of the Chairman.

This year's committee is comprised of the Chairman and last year's winners, if they choose to participate.

Here's a link to last years contest for anyone feeling a bit nostalgic:

Any thought to having two categories, one for landscape and one for human interest? Capturing a landscape is different from the human interest element and is like comparing apples to thermometers.

EDIT: Just learned to read, so I read the rules, which answered my question, which leads me to this:

Any thought to allowing a submission into each category? What purpose does forcing someone to choose between landscape and human interest serve?

These won't win, but I like them.

First, my submission — the first time I've ever seen a "2 from the left" on a hole location sheet, on the 13th hole at Ancil Hoffman in Carmichael, CA.
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/cohnhead72/GCA1_zpscb09711e.png)

Second, a submission on behalf of Chris Kane, for whom Cal Club raised the Aussie flag on the occasion of his visit last week.

Long time lurker, infrequent poster.

Made my first trip to Barnbougle last week. The both days we were there, the weather was rather dim until late afternoon when it turned magical. Certainly the best time to play golf and take photos.

Unfortunately it was taken on my phone, so there's something to be desired in terms of quality - but still I was extremely satisfied with the outcome. Photo is of the 17th at Barnbougle Dunes, a brilliant strong par 4.

Can I nominate any of the photos from Jon Cavalier's Myopia Hunt or Eastward Ho threads?!

Myopia;

Eastward Ho;
http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,59919.0.html

Anyway here's my favourite from 2014. It's not great quality as it's from my phone taken in the p!ssing rain during US Open qualifying at Walton Heath but it sums up a great day watching world class golf on a world class course and getting closer to the action than ever before.

Not trying to win any prizes this year. Just thought this thread is a great place to memorialize one of the most affectionate cats I've known... I had great hope this cat would become a mainstay at Kingsley, but a home was found for it and so the cat's time at the club was very short.

Thanks to Bill Seitz's bag for providing the backdrop.

these are some amazing pictures.  i like the animal theme represented in many of them.  hopefully a lot more pics will be posted -- this is always one of the best threads of the year. if forced to pick one i'd go with the "sunset at crail" pic but it's a tough pick to make.

Some great photos so far. My favourites are Barnbougle by Lukas and the goats at Lahinch.

I'll throw in my brother crackin one down the 3rd/12th at Durness in most northerly northern Scotland. Certainly among a handful of the most magic golfing days in my life... **edited* into the black/white version*

wow that's an amazing tee shot on that hole.  especially where the pin placement was that day.  it's hard enough to hold a pitch shot near that location, let alone a drive.

It's an out and back cut fairway.  Here's a clearer view of the fairway cut - it extends all the way out past the left bunkers.

Since we are talking near holes-in-one, this is my tee shot on 14 at Royal Porthcawl on my first 18 of the day. It ran to the right edge of the hole and lipped out to 18" on the left. On the second 18, my friend Bob who has played Kings Putter with me a couple of times asked me what I hit the first time around. He then also chose his 8 iron and hit the shot running right at the hole. It hit the left edge and lipped out just to the right. I guess the difference is he's right handed, and I'm left handed. ;)

Mountain golf is completely different...just as treacherous when you miss a fairway,
but with a completely different feel.

I've been trying to beta good image of the 12th at Coyote Moon for several years.
As you can see here, even a 14mm lens barely captures all of it.

Okay, finally, the 14th at Coyote Moon. This is a short par-4, usually an iron, uphill into a narrow fairway, then left for your 2nd, across the creek, into a picturesque and shallow green.

Got this shot while standing on the bridge. Had the camera on a pole some 20 feet in the air.

This par-3 at Lake Merced has much of what I look for in a golf image...
Clean
Elevated
Clear view of the flag
Contrasting color
And....no people

Most of the time, people date images.

...but not always. This is the 11th at my home course, Richmond Country Club.
It's a parkland course...a tour stop in the 40's and 50's.
A bit dated, just like its members, but we like the place and I like these guys in particular.

It's a moment...one repeated week after week for them.

A shot from a round I played in March, on the course at Ratho. A working sheep farm, and reputedly the site of Australia's oldest golf course. The course is only playable part of the year, and the fairways are the menu for the grazing sheep, with many greens protected by little chicken wire fences.

(http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b556/tgfkiteboy/Mobile%20Uploads/WP_004369_zpsfe344ec0.jpg) (http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/tgfkiteboy/media/Mobile%20Uploads/WP_004369_zpsfe344ec0.jpg.html)

As an aside - this was the scene on the 8th tee (mid-iron par 3), with a typical Australian flavor greeting those about to play. The challenge - ignore the flapping laundry by the veranda out of image to the left, hit past a dunny (small outside toilet) over a fence, over the sheep, avoid the old antenna, stay left of the shed and hope you end up on the right side of the barbed wire fence up near the green.

Obviously Pebble Beach 7th Hole. It's not very original to post a picture of one of the most iconic holes in golf, but I just love how it looks in black and white on a foggy day on the Monterey Peninsula. That I almost hit the flagstick moments before made it even more memorable to me.

And this could be agony or ecstasy, as well, depending on how your feel about 3.5 million dollar water features
on a 33 million dollar desert golf course filled with flowers and artificial streams.

My tap-in birdie makes me learn toward ecstasy, but it's sure an oddball finishing hole on an oddball course.

It's too hard to choose from the courses I played this year (and better photos were taken by others of the more famous courses anyway), so I will have to go with my favorite from this past weekend: the approach at #8 at Mountain Lake ("Raynor"), with #9 ("Short") in the background.

RJ,

That's a mini-CM.

Two photos of real snakes will be posted shortly.

I should have taken a picture of the large alligator sunning himself on the fairway bank on # 8 Blue.

I tried to get him to move, but, he didn't budge an inch.

I got the message.

He wasn't letting me play through.

Mr. Lavin and I think this picture of Mr. Lewis in the Devil's Asshole bunker on the 9th hole at Dunes Club fully captures the architect's intent.  Mr. Lavin feels it shows the architect's ability to frustrate the aggressive, or in this case cocky, player.

Made me think. So many of our pleasures happen in the evening or at night.

Golf is about the day, I would have loved this picture if it was a sunset.
What a day that must have been.

But a sunrise like that over a golf course.
The promise of that day boggles the mind.

Tony,

I'm more of a twilight golfer myself, but glad I could be of some assistance for what is presumably a cold winter for those elsewhere  :).

This could go on the Best Moments of 2014 thread, but here is a photo of Mike Benham walking to the 10th Green at Sand Hills in the evening with the moon in the sky,

Probably after sticking his approach!

Mr. Freedman simply likes taking golf photos.
His entry remains the first one...
That's the 1st at Richmond Country Club.

Nice shot of #5, Kyle.
We'll have to get together to play and shoot, sometime.
Or, maybe the other way around.

I know that the subject matter is over reproduced and I really, really wanted to use one of my UK pictures from August but having looked things over this strikes me as the most vivid photo I took this year...

Mr. Lavin and I think this picture of Mr. Lewis in the Devil's Asshole bunker on the 9th hole at Dunes Club fully captures the architect's intent.  Mr. Lavin feels it shows the architect's ability to frustrate the aggressive, or in this case cocky, player.

Here are the Finalists for 2014.  With a banner crop of entries it was tough to narrow them down to just five.  It should be noted that entrants did not earn extra points for multitudinous posts or photos that could be equated to bragging about being able to drive a Par 4.  I did, however, enjoy the nod to Ran's latest message that showed up late in the thread.

Please pick one photo in Category A (Category B's winner is noted below) and submit your vote either by posting in this thread or by sending me a Private Message.  Since we got a late start this year, I'll close the voting at the end of the day on Jan. 1.

In lieu of prizes this year I will be making a donation to the fund for Ted Cahill's son.  If anyone who has not yet donated wishes to match, please feel free.

Memorials can be made to:

Bank of America
Ryan Robert Cahill Education Trust
c/o Margaret Bottorff
2005 Rochester Ct.
Iowa City, IA 52245

A special nod to Padraig Dooley, who would have been in the running this year for his Lahinch Goats if he hadn't won last year.:

Why?
Composition and understatement trump HDRs, crooked horizons, silhouettes, and generic sunsets.
He put some serious work into that.

Second vote goes for the icy landscape.

High Dynamic Range . None of the photos I saw were HDR, more like photoshopped skies, notice how grainy the skies are.

Thanks to all those that voted for my entry. I certainly didn't expect to win, particularly with a shot from my phone but I'm really glad you all liked it.

For those wondering, it's the 17th hole at Barnbougle Dunes. It was my first time playing that hole, and just happened to get absolutely magical weather and lighting for a great photo. I'll have to stick around here and contribute a bit more now that I've won this  ;D

Ronald, HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. It makes perfect exposures of skies, foregrounds, etc.
Looks perfect.
Too perfect.
You see plenty of it in golf course photography, plus over saturated greens, blues, etc.
If a photo looks worked, they don't look real.
Doesn't mean you shouldn't do work on one.
It simply should not be obvious, even when substantial.
