Ladies and Gentlemen:

Once again it is my pleasure to invite you to attend the 16th Annual 5th Major Championship, June 25-28 at Dismal River Golf Club in Mullen, Nebraska. This is a not-too-serious fourball event played over three days on both Jack Nicklaus’s White Course and Tom Doak’s Red Course.

You will need a partner, but don’t hesitate to come alone, as we've had success in pairing the eventual champs in both 2011 and 2012. All are welcome - no matter the skill level - as the tournament is flighted. We had a full field of 40 teams in 2014, so be sure to book early to secure your spot. A $100 deposit is due by April 15 in order to secure your reservation. Deposits are non-refundable after this date.

I can’t thank the club enough for allowing me to host the event at Dismal for what will be our fifth year there! My good friend and fellow GCAer, Chris Johnston, CEO of Dismal River, deserves the bulk of my gratitude. Thank you, Chris!

Here are the details for the 2015 5th Major:

Format: Fourball
* Flighted
* Series of 9 hole matches
* Flight winners playoff for the Nicklaus Trophy

When: Thursday, June 25 to Sunday, June 28

Field: Up to 40 Teams

Cost: $1,195 per person includes: 3 days of unlimited golf (Th, Fr, Sa), 3 nights accommodation in an onsite cabin, all meals (Dinner on Thursday, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner on Friday, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner on Saturday and Breakfast on Sunday). Also includes all taxes and gratuities for the package.

Deposits: A $100.00 deposit secures your reservation. Register (http://www.5thmajor.com/#!register/c181a)

Additional day(s): Those wishing to stay extra days and/or nights before or after the event should contact the club directly at 308-546-2900 or via email to Shanda at smesic@dismalriver.com. Space is limited so be sure to check early. The club is also offering discounted fees for Sunday golf and lodging (about 50 %). Just be sure to confirm with Shanda any reservation outside of the tournament days.

Also, if anyone would like to do a Hundred Hole Hike at Dismal the following day (Monday, June 29) your golf fees that day will be gratis. Again, please check with the club to confirm a reservation.

Transportation: The easiest way to fly to Dismal River is via Denver International Airport. There you can rent a car and drive approximately 5 hours to DRGC. http://goo.gl/maps/KZ9B2 Many GCAers carpool from DIA to Dismal and I'd expect that to be the case next year as well so check back later for updates.

*Another option is to fly further on from Denver to North Platte, Nebraska via Great Lakes Air. http://greatlakes.booksecure.net/Criteria.aspx There you can rent a car and drive approximately an hour and a half to the club. Their flight schedule is limited so you'll want to check to be sure there are available flights on the dates in which you wish to travel.

Other golf courses to consider on your trip:
In Denver there is a public course by Tom Doak, CommonGround (http://www.commongroundgc.com/)
Also in Denver is the private Coore & Crenshaw design Colorado Golf Club (http://www.coloradogolfclub.com/Default.aspx?p=DynamicModule&pageid=349661&ssid=253834&vnf=1)
About halfway to Dismal River is the private Tom Doak design, Ballyneal (http://www.ballyneal.com/)
Near Ogallala on Lake McConaughy, there is Bayside (http://baysidegolf.com/), which has an affordable stay and play package.
A bit further east on I-80 is Wild Horse (http://www.playwildhorse.com/)
Next door to Dismal River is Sand Hills Golf Club (https://plus.google.com/116229067953498674561/about?gl=us&hl=en)
2 hours north of the club is the Prairie Club (http://www.theprairieclub.com/)

More info: Format, schedules, photo galleries, incriminating videos, etc. at 5thmajor.com (http://www.5thmajor.com)

If you've been before, I hope you'll consider making a return visit. If you haven't, 2015 may be your year to win a Major! A trip to the sandhills all but guarantees you won't forget having tried. :)

Cheers,

Eric

I am undoubtedly biased, but the 5th Major is one of the best examples of what makes GCA so great.  I attended the 5th Major three years ago as a single, never having met a single person from GCA.  I arrived to find 80+ of the nicest, most welcoming people I have ever met.  I left with life-long friendships with people as passionate about GCA as I am.  And the golf wasn't half bad either.  If are thinking about attending, I can assure you it is well worth it.

What's the loft on those things? I'm always hearing that wedges are useless in the sandhills.

I was freezing and delirious at the time, but I think I met Eric for about 45 seconds at Sweetens Cove last March and told him I'd be at the major in 2015.

It is definitely a great time! I also went not knowing a soul my first year and everyone was awesome! I have been back the pass 3 years. The 5th Major is now an annual tradition.

Is there golf on Sunday, for the 5th major?

Hi Matt.

I'm glad you asked because I did a poor job of identifying which three days are included in the tournament package. The 5th Major includes unlimited golf Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The club is offering discounted fees for Sunday golf and lodging (about 50 %) but you will need to check with Shanda smesic@dismalriver.com to confirm a reservation outside of the tournament days.

Also, if anyone would like to do their Hundred Hole Hike at Dismal the following day (Monday, June 29) your golf fees that day will be gratis. Again, please check with the club to confirm a reservation.

We've changed the event schedule this year and will play the first matches on Thursday afternoon, where before Thursday was an add-on day. Hopefully this will allow a more relaxed pace to the tournament and allow for more opportunities to create your own games around the matches. More than anything it will allow the playoff to finish on Saturday afternoon, not Saturday night. :P

Always a spot open for you, sir! If my math is correct we now have 48 on the roster (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1B4N46KPkxKulIezUzLBCwQblEJVImsU-s42o63Omjrs/edit?usp=sharing).

Sadly, that photo is not an accurate depiction of his new partner. The only thing that I have in common with Dustin Johnson is that we both love someone named Gretzky.

There are several folks on this website who can attest to my mediocre 9.5 index, at least one of whom is in the field.

Didn't someone make an ace on the 8th a couple years ago as well?

I'm still surprised we've had 2 or 3 aces in the 5th Major but none have been on the 10th. So many shots that take that front left slope and go for the hole but don't quite do it.

I believe it was Jonathan Cummings who made an albatross at no. 8, but that wasn't during the tournament.

And I agree, someone making one at no.10 is long overdue!

Also a reminder that deposits are due in a couple of days and while I'm awaiting an email from the club showing who has or hasn't paid if you all wouldn't mind looking over my list and letting me know of any additions or subtractions I need to make I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Sam,

A fleet of pull carts / rickshaws / trolleys - whatever you prefer to call them  - are there for your walking pleasure. They are typically staged just before the first tee of the Red Course.

Was 66 really the previous record?  If true, I was only five shots off the record on my Sunday round last year - I'm sure that's the closest to any course record I've ever been or ever will be!  Being 12 shots off the record puts me back into my comfort zone so I'm ready to go now!  8)

Many thanks for the Woodland story link.  I would love to see his card.  I know where the birdies are, for me, but Gary undoubtedly got through the tough front 8 in fine shape, then made hay on the back 10.  It's not impossible, just frickin' amazing.

Here's Woodland's card. Amazing that he didn't birdie a single par 3. And played from behind the tips in a lot of spots.

A serious question.... Is there a virus going around out in the environs of Mullen or within the compound of DR?  I ask because Woodland had to go to hospital for IV to treat dehydration from a virus he is suffering.   I'd add, are there any known high incidents of West Nile from mosquitos out there this year.  With all the rain recently, and there has been West Nile out there in past, I would really like to know - as my personal medical condition can not handle such a situation with very weak immune system and unable to take most traditional antibiotics.  I reckon it may warrant a call to the Hooker Co., health dept.  ... if there is such a agency in that sparsely populated country.

As a native Omahan, this would be a wise decision.  Highly recommend a CWS experience.  Also, I highly recommend a trip to Tony Tubrick's shop, Classic Golf, while you're there. Incredible hickory shaft collection and a great dude.  Many more recommendations, but for another day.

What a great turnout for the 5th Major - 28 teams - playing match play within 7 flights over both the White and Red Courses - with a 7 team playoff afterwards on the Red, where the team of Raulie Weber and Eric Borchers outlasted the runners-up, Dan Kelly and Dan Moore.

Photo courtesy of Dan Moore, who is not only a terrific golfer and competitor, but a gifted photographer as well. He's shared a few of his shots with me and they are, in a word, spectacular.

Thank you to all of the GCAers who continue to make the effort to attend this event! I've met more great folks through GCA than likely any other group, anywhere, in my entire life. I count many of my best friends, the people I talk to on a regular basis, as either past or present GCAers, and for that I owe a debt of gratitude to Ran and Ben for providing this forum. Thank you, Gentlemen!

And, thank you, Dismal River!

Beautiful.
And if RJ won his flight it means he is playing good golf, which means his back troubles have cleared up, which is great.
And -- I think we can now say that Dan Kelly is either the best editor who plays great golf, or the best golfer who is a great editor!
I live vicariously through Eric's golfing life, and that's pretty darn good

So, if James Brown is the hardest working man in show biz,  I feel confident to say CJ is the hardest working man in golf.

Thank you Chris for an overwhelming outpouring of hospitality and the many kind words you spoke.

Thank you Eric, Kav and the members of DR that share their awe inspiring club with so many of us for several days.  If you can ever see your way clear, my advice is to take one of these 5th Major events in..... Peter?  You will never regret the time to get there or modest $ to participate by comparison to so many other travel golf events.  I met some newer gents this time that I hadn't run into on the GCA circuit previously.  I felt like we were all part of a fellowship, more so than a frat rat sort of club; but more like people that have serendipitously come together to discover something of great common interest and uniqueness not found easily in any quarters.

BTW,  the beef steaks were absolutely as good as it gets.   ;D

Tagging on here to say Thanks to Chris, Eric Smith and Dismal River for hosting and supporting me on my Hundred Hole Hike. We arrived a little late on Sunday so I didn't get to meet any GCA'ers departing the 5th Major, which I really wanted to do.

But Chris and head pro Joe took good care of me all day Monday (and were a little worried :) ) as I looped around the Doak course. First time to the sand hills and any golf in those parts. Hope to make it to the 5th Major next year and enjoy Dismal River at a more leisurely pace.

It was a fun time, on and off the course.  My golf was average, but the food was great.

Seeing the Dan's (the quiet assassins), the esteemed Mr. Daley back at it, and both dear old and new friends was a hoot!

Dick - it isn't work if its fun!

Ryan - Congrats on the HHH.  Well done!

Thanks to all who came out!

Wardo - Sorry how things ended in Omaha. But your idea for 2016 could work. The 2016 College World Series is Saturday, June 18 through Tuesday/Wednesday, June 28/29. Though, that would lead into the 4th of July weekend (7/4/2016 is on a Monday) and we typically hold the 5th Major the weekend before the 4th of July weekend. Much to ponder ... Ryan H. - Congrats on your Hundred Hole Hike!

Our Tomahawk Chop flight may not have produced the best golf but we sure found a way to have a great time!!  It was fun meeting everyone!  The golf never disappoints at Dismal River and the food is something special!  The tuna Friday night was to die for and I am now hooked on Rochefort as well!
