Title: Buda Cup 2015: Notts & Sherwood Forest THE FINAL RUN IN...
Post by: James Boon on November 25, 2014, 07:52:11 AM
We are less than a week away from this years Buda Cup, so a last minute wrap up of who, when and where...

CONFIRMED ATTENDEES, PART TIMERS & POSSIBLES

Below are those who have confirmed for the whole event and those who have confirmed part time attendance. Unfortunately we've had a few last minute withdrawals:
(http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn267/jamesboon53/Misc/Buda5.jpg) (http://s306.photobucket.com/user/jamesboon53/media/Misc/Buda4.jpg.html)

I've confirmed numbers above to the club. I've arranged for a past Captain at Sherwood to join us in the morning foursomes and he may join us in the afternoon, otherwise one match will be a single against a pair. The Captain of Notts GC has agreed to join us for the meal on the Tuesday and may join us for the afternoon game as well, though this could mean needing to play a 5 ball as the last group (actually quite a common occurrence at Notts).

After mentioning a buggy for Bryan (on medical grounds only Melvyn in case you are reading  ;D ) a few others have come forward with ailments. I've therefore notified the clubs that one or two may need buggies and will leave it up to discussions between those needing and the captains to how that will all pan out...

DATES & VENUES

Please make sure you are all at the club at least 20 mins to half an hour before the first tee time to avoid panic and confusion amongst captains and organiser!

Mon 17 Aug
36 holes at Sherwood Forest GC
Morning tee times from 9am: Foursomes
Afternoon tee times from 1.30pm: Fourball
Lunch provided between rounds.
Evening meal booked in Nottingham at Fothergills for 8.30pm
http://www.eversosensible.com/fothergills/ (http://www.eversosensible.com/fothergills/)
If anyone doesn't plan on joining us, please let me know.

Tues 18 Aug
36 holes at Notts GC Hollinwell
Followed by a formal meal at the club that evening, jacket and tie required!
Morning tee times from 8.36: Greensomes
Afternoon tee times from 2.04: Fourball
Lunch provided between rounds.

Wed 19 Aug
18 holes at Notts GC Hollinwell
Morning tee times from 9.04: Singles

As the weather should hopefully be warm, shorts policy at both clubs is:
"Shorts should be tailored and worn with knee length socks OR predominantly white ankle length sports socks"

ACCOMMODATION

I believe many of us are staying at Premier Inn Nottingham West
http://www.premierinn.com/en/hotel/NOTMIL/nottingham-west (http://www.premierinn.com/en/hotel/NOTMIL/nottingham-west)
Please let me know if you aren't and where you are staying.
I'm planning on meeting up at the pub at the hotel between 7 and 8 on the Sunday evening...

There is currently a room going spare on Monday night from one of our withdrawals if anyone needs accommodation, let me know.

FURTHER READING

For those of you not aware of the courses, Notts GC Hollinwell is a heathland course dating back to 1901 by Willie Park Junior, with later works by the clubs own professional Tom Williamson. Most recently the club hosted the Boys Championship which was won my Matthew Fitzpatrick before he went on to win the US Amateur Championship, and has just hosted the Brabazon Trophy. Anyone who has recently purchased a copy of Tom Doak’s Confidential Guide will also notice it sits within the Gourmet Choice, something I as a member and the club are very proud of! I know Ran is a fan of the course, but haven't been able to tempt him over for this! For further reading:
Club website:      http://www.nottsgolfclub.co.uk/pages.php/index_member.html (http://www.nottsgolfclub.co.uk/pages.php/index_member.html)
Ran’s Review:      http://golfclubatlas.com/courses-by-country/england/notts1/ (http://golfclubatlas.com/courses-by-country/england/notts1/)

Sherwood Forest GC present course dates back to 1910 and after Harry Colt’s input, most of what is in play today is the work of James Braid. Another excellent heathland course! For further reading:

I intend to try to add to my one day total of BUDA attendance to date.... But I too won't be confirming any time soon. Which - I understand - is no help if you are organising.

Therefore it will likely be a slot in if there's space closer to the time scenario.

I'm keen to add a little local knowledge to the home team and get involved in BUDA for the first time but I don't think I can commit until abit closer to the time, I might have to be a late 'slot in' like the last few posters.

Worksop is another local course which might be worth a visit for the guys looking for another game.

After working through various accommodation possibilities its looking like we have the following options:

1. Hotel near to the course
There are a couple of options here. One in Mansfield which probably seems a bit of a turnoff for most or one, the Dakota http://www.dakotanottingham.co.uk/ just off Junction 27 of the M1 motorway and about 5 minutes from the club. I will drop into the Dakota at some point over the coming weeks to see if they can do us a deal for 20 or so people and make sure the bar will be open late! Though by taxi and tram or mini bus the city centre isnt out of the question.

2. Hotel on edge of city
There are probably several options here, but the one that comes to mind is the Premier Inn at Phoenix Park. This is again easily accessed as its just off Junction 26 of the M1 and its about 15 minutes from the club. ALSO the last tram stop is just across the road which is therefore about a 25 minute tram ride into the city for bars, restaurants etc. There are also a couple of chain pub type places nearby so anyone who doesnt fancy the city can still get a bite to eat, perhaps late on Sunday night for instance?

3. Hotel within Nottingham city
So many option and such a wide choice of costs and styles. Easy access to bars and restaurants, pubs, shops, etc etc. But it will be about 30 minutes drive from the club if you are lucky which is probably going to be even more in midweek rush hour traffic and depending upon the hotel, parking might be in a city centre multi storey? A minibus or even hired coach isnt out of the question to get us to the club one day if we are staying for a meal, and may even be worth considering for all 3 days?

What are everyone's feelings on this matter? Please let me know so I can then do further work on the preferred option, though people will obviously be okay to go their own way if they want?

Cheers,

James

Well done, James.

I know the Dakota "chain" fairly well as it's first hotel outside of Glasgow was within spitting distance of my wife's workplace and the second one (outside of Edinburgh) is on the way from my house to my daughter's trampolining classes and I have been known to double back there for a drink and or a bite to eat whilst waiting for my wee petal to stop bouncing.  Good to see that they have ventured out into Mittelingerland.  Very stylish, very good food and reasonably priced.  However, they are quiet hotels, full of poseurs, and unlikely to be enamored by a rowdy crowd of golfers late into the night.

As for the middle of Nottingham, there be dragons there, and I think that the 30+ minute daily drives to and from the courses is a bit too much.

As for the Premier Inn option, it is the Caddyshack equivalent of the "pond" (vs. the "pool" that is the Dakota), which makes it perfect for BUDA--15 minutes away from the golf, easily findable even if in distress, cheap and cheerful pubs in close proximity and a tram line to the center of Dragonland to boot!  Beam us down there safely for three days, Boonie and you will be legend.....

Premier Inns have been known to do 'deals' if you're booking multiple rooms.

In addition, folowing positive feedback at Burnham on participants playing in the open comp at Westward Ho!/RND immediately after last years St Enodoc Buda, I have already had a wee scout around the web to try to find if there are any open comps scheduled at other clubs in the Notts area at dates coinciding with Buda-'15. No success in finding any so far but it's a bit early for many clubs to be publishing their comp dates just yet. I shall continue to keep a lookout though and will advise if I come across any.

Boony

I am interested in playing Tues PM and Wed Am, but I am not sure if this is permitted.  Please advise.

So far as the hotel, I agree with Rihc, Premier Inn Nottingham West would be my preference.  I suspect to get good rates the hotels have to be paid for when booking.  To save you hassle, it may be best to suggest a hotel of choice and require Pests to be responsible for their own bookings.

Ciao

It's been a few years since I've been able to even try to work my schedule around a Buda. I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing next August right now, but I will try my best figure an itinerary which includes this. Last time I was at Sherwood Forest I was caddying for our club pro Leo Feeney. That would have been 1974 or '75.

That's a very generous offer Duncan. That would be ideal as I could get a direct train from Edinburgh to Manchester Airport on the Sunday morning. A round at Reddish Vale would be an added bonus.

Anyone flying into or out of Manchester Airport pre- or post-Buda is welcome as my guest at Wilmslow - could easily be combined with a round at Reddish Vale, too. I'm sure I'll be able to get deals on Prestbury and Sandiway, too, playing with members. All the clubs are keen to raise their profile internationally.

Gutted at not been able to make this but in the middle of the season I can't get away. Great venues and James will be a great host. For those travelling from further afield it is worth staying a little longer and playing Lindrick (ex RC course) which is just up the road as well as Moortown, Alwoodley and a host of other great courses within an hour or so drive.

James,
Ordinarily I would like to stay close to the course.  Nottingham seems like a great place to spend a few nights, but with a dinner at the club one of the nights, I'm not sure how much time there would be there.  For me, it all comes down to how dismal Mansfield truly is. Clean rooms and decent pubs nearby are good enough for me.  I could live with any of the options.

Of course if you want to venture over to Notts whilst over here for the Walker Cup etc then please let me know!

All,

Apologies for the delay in getting details finalised. I should be posting an update in the first couple of weeks of the new year.

Cheers,

It is only December and the USA(rest of the world) has suffered a big loss.  Ward, who will carry me in four ball?  Your presence both on and off the course will be missed in 2015.

I would volunteer to carry you as I did Ward in four ball, but I won't be there either.

;D

So you are one and done?

All the press ahead of time was Carne would be next year, so I intended to do at least two. Now it seems I have to wait a year for my trip to Carne.

I've paypaled Tony or should that read palpaid.   At any rate or exchange rate, it looks like I be on the loose in the islands from mid July but I may be escorting some non golfing friends until late July which will limit my opportunities to explore other venues until August.

Looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.

Morning all,

I thought it was worth a quick bump to stir up a bit more interest in this years Buda...

Deposits received are listed in the opening post if you have copied me in. I'm sure Tony will update with any more I've missed when he is back in Blighty.

Should the powers of Buda decide to continue with the dubious practice of two single matches in 4ball, below is one way to limit the time damages.

the match furthest from the hole would putt out first before the other group started to putt.  The first group would then hit-off from the next tee straight away, and be joined by the other match when they had finished putting out.

So far as attendance my is concerned...I am a strong maybe.  Much depends on holidays and if Buda plenipotentiaries grant permission for part-timers to sign up early.

Ciao

Another bump to try and drum up some local interest from this side of the pond!

A few things worth noting:

Sean, it will be twoballs for the singles on Wednesday! None of this 2 singles matches playing as a fourball rubbish!

Though it may cause a little frustration for whoever the Captains will be, I'm happy for people to attend Buda this year who cant commit to all 3 days. So anyone thinking they can only make 1 or 2 days, make yourself known!!!

Lastly, I believe there may be details posted soon regarding other possible gatherings before or after the main event! Beau Desert looks a favourite but we shall have to see...

Cheers,

James

ps I've missed a couple of calls recently from a Texas phone number. I know a few GCAers are based that way so if this was one of you I apologise, please send me an e-mail or message on here and I will call you back!

I'm not (yet) on the OP as it turns out that BUDA conflicts with my 17yr old daughter's going on holiday to Barcelona with friends, which will be the first time we have been homne alone!  Josie and I have been swithering as to how to spend our free time between a romantic week at either the Hotel Negresco in Nice or the Premier Inn at Nottingham.  Decisions, Decisions!

If the powers that be Boonie will let Josie play in BUDA (for the UK side, which severely needs strengthening), we are in.  We await a reply.

Me too!   ;D ;D

My schedule and travel schedule has completely changed and I am now planning to attend the Buda... my 10th in a row!!! Tony, my deposit is on the way via Paypal.

I'm very interested in any pre and post Buda plans. Beginning the Saturday after Buda are 10 days of open competitions at Royal Cinque Ports called "Deal Week." Most entry fees are around £40 or you can purchase a 10 day membership for something like $160. I'll definitely be in Deal for a few days to take part and will post more information when I get it from the club. According to fellow members it is a very festive week!

Cheers!

Please feel free to bring Josie along as well!

All,

Have updated the opening post with a few more deposits / confirmations received and have added a few people to a possibles list who have expressed a recent interest in hopefully attending or perhaps joining us for a day or two, just to get a better feel for where we stand.

Will shortly be contacting both clubs to book an extra tee time, taking us up to 20, but we wont be fixing this till much nearer the time.

I was at a meeting at Prestbury Golf Club today and they have offered courtesy of the course to any of you involved in BUDA flying in or out of Manchester Airport, which is conveniently close. Prestbury is a delightful Colt course of 1920 vintage. Let me know if you wish to take advantage of this so that I might make arrangements.

I can also offer to host you at Wilmslow. Wilmslow and Prestbury are only about 5 miles apart, so you could play 36 holes comfortably.

Morning everyone,

A quick query and a reminder regarding accommodation for Buda.

I believe most of us will be staying at Premier Inn Nottingham West?
http://www.premierinn.com/en/hotel/NOTMIL/nottingham-west

Mike W was asking if there was anyone who might want to share a room, and if so, please contact him to discuss...

Premier Inn Nott'm West is easily accessed as its just off Junction 26 of the M1 and its about 10 to 15 minutes drive from the club. Not sure of the cost as it seems to change daily and as the date approaches and availability reduces apparently the price will go up?

Just so you all know, I've booked Sunday, Monday and Tuesday night for myself. I suspect there is the chance for people of booking a few more days depending upon when and where other golf is arranged, which I believe Tony is looking into at present?

Is everyone else planning at being at Premier Inn or has anyone who is staying over (ie not those traveling on the day) made separate arrangements?

Cheers,

James

Like James I've booked the Premier Inn for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights. I'll most likely be driving from Edinburgh early on the Sunday morning so will hopefully get a game on the Sunday afternoon if people have already arrived.

I could look at flying into Manchester or getting the train from Edinburgh but driving seems to be the easiest logistically.

Cheers,

Michael

A quick bump for this thread to see if any more people are interested and to add to those confirmed.

Tony is looking at golf the weekend before and so hopefully confirming soon.

We have had a few problems booking at the suggested hotel recently so anyone who hasn't get in there fast, any problems let me know, apparently there are ways of booking even when the website says they are full!

Finally, we are about 3 months out now so should be looking to try and finalise details of anyone who is only planning on playing a day or two, rather than the full thing, just in case we need to start requesting further tee times. However we can get this sorted over the next month or 2, I just know I'm going to be quite busy during this period to be chasing people so I'm giving plenty of notice here...

Cheers,

James

Pre Buda Golf

If interested in any of this please IM me.

Sat 15th August

Either
Royal Worlington “the sacred 9” £55 from midday. Only drawback this is  2.5 hrs from hotel but it is ideal if any are travelling up from Deal that morning. County cards may be less. (PS I’m up for this if anyone else is.)
Or
Woodhall Spa  had 2 times from 1.40.     £55 for special friends of Nigel Farage,  £75 for bloody foreigners.   1.45min to hotel. Warning this is in the middle of nowhere unless you are coming from Brancaster.
Or
Luffenham Heath £65 a possible haven’t spoken to Secretary.  Nice course just off A1 so travel from the south quite easy.

Sunday
Cavendish from midday for something silly like £25 (I’ll check).   About 1.15 from hotel.  At the moment Sean Tony and Michael G are interested in this.

Time for action.  Let's be havin' you.

Tony,

As of today, our threesome is planning on arriving at LHR on Friday morning Aug 14.  The best itinerary we could come up with was Royal Worlington on Friday afternoon in our semi-somnambulist(?) state.  Saturday we are planning on Royal Cromer in the morning and Sheringham in the later afternoon.  On Sunday we're booked into Hunstanton in the afternoon.

Then BUDA on Monday - Wednesday.

We're planning on Woodhall Spa on Thursday.

The pre-BUDA rounds and Woodhall Spa we are a 3-some and could possibly add a 4th if anyone is interested.

Really looking forward to the Buda Cup this year! I was at the final day of the Brabazon Trophy yesterday watching how the top amateurs do it, and the course looked magnificent, with both the EGU and R&A saying how impressive the course and its condition was (I will post a few photos if I get time!)

Lots of undecided folk but at the moment

Sat  Woodhall Spa   2pm    Craig, Mike and Tony
Sunday Cavendish  12.40pm  Robin, Michael and Tony.

So that leaves one extra spot guaranteed each day. Frst to confirm....

PS sign of the times a little after us at Cavendish.   Footgolf!

However, two items of bad news....

Firstly, I will be coming, arriving on the 16th, with a golf game that only sado-masochist could love.
Secondly, Josie will not be able to make it as she has decided to go back to WORK!!! (as the late, great Maynard G. Krebs would say).  Maybe next year...

Unfortunately I am playing in the European Deaf Golf Open Championships at Hauger Golf Klubb in Norway and will not be back til Sunday night.

Last month Robin Hiseman and I played Luffenham in which I was blown away by Robin's putting on some challenging greens - Robin had 10 putts for the first 9 holes and hope he brings that form to BUDA!

Also Rutland Water is worth having a look at as it is the biggest man made lake in England (3500 acres) and Hambleton Hall has a reputation for being one of the best restaurants in the country - its pricey though.

Of course you are right James. How did we get this far without the usual trash talk?
Perusing the list we have a couple of experienced Budaista's on either side who have yet to receive this most esteemed honour, the culmination of anymans golfing career, a celebration desired by so many but awarded to so few...

To qualify you have to be able to write your teams names down in a different order 5 times, find the other Captain and then let everyone know what’s been decided. That’s it.

So I see the following as the eligible candidates.

( I count about equal no's of North Americans and GB&I, with Rich of course qualifying to play for whichever team is in the lead at that point (Joke alert!). Do we have any other nations represented?  A ROW team needed?)

For the North Americans we have (alphabetical order)

Brian Izett
Lynn Shackleford
Steve Wilson

For GB&I

Ian Dickson
Mark Rowlinson

Please speak up if any other names should be in the ring.
Speak up now or you'll find yourself voted in anyway.

Was the Balvenie Doublewood ploy not immediately recognized as a bribe to avoid this honor rather than to actually honor Uncle Bill?

Or perhaps I should rephrase it as how was the Balvenie Doublewood ploy interpreted as anything but a desperate plea to be spared?

Now, let's cut to the chase, what else do I have to bring to make the votive offering sufficient?

I can't believe that the North American team would pass up the opportunity to have as a leader of men a man who absorbed the tenets of winning from one of the all time masters--John Wooden of UCLA.  I probably could induce Lynn to provide me with some Wooden expressions but while should the North American's settle for the jockey or the stable boy when they could go directly to the horse?  I ask you?

So it looks like our Captains are Steve Wilson and Conrad Gamble!

Looking at the list of players, from those playing all 5 rounds we have 9 each from North America v GB&I with a number of part timers causing chaos for the Captains...

I've added our tee times to the opening post, and below are points for discussion:

Mon 17 Aug
Sherwood Forest GC
Morning tee times from 9am
Afternoon tee times from 1.30pm
That's only 4 and a half hours between tee times, but this should be plenty if we are playing Foursomes in the morning. We have sandwiches and chips put on for us at lunch. The earlier tee time in the afternoon gives plenty of time for us to get around and then get to somewhere to eat...

The plan (implied even if not carved in stone) has always been to look at the possibility of getting into Nottingham on the tram (for those of us at the Premier in at Phoenix Park) for some food and a drink or two. We should all be finished by 6.30 which does mean its possible to head back to hotels and then get into Nottingham with view to eating somewhere in the city at say 8.30? What does everybody think?

Tues 18 Aug
Notts GC Hollinwell
Morning tee times from 8.36
Afternoon tee times from 2.04

A bit more time between tee times here, so Greensomes is a possibility in the morning if interested, but I will leave this to the Captains... Again sandwiches and chips will be available at lunch.

In the evening we will behaving a formal meal at the golf club, 3 courses, jacket and tie required. I've invited the captain and he has said he will be delighted to join us! I will talk to the club about getting hold of details of any local taxi companies...

Wed 19 Aug
18 holes at Notts GC Hollinwell
Morning tee times from 9.04

I have arranged it that we have 10 tee times booked and so the singles will be played in pairs, rather than in fours as we have had to from time to time in the past... I'm not sure what anyone's plans are for the afternoon, getting away swiftly and the like, so I haven't arranged for any food, but people will be able to look after themselves as required.

Any comments or queries please reply here, send me a DM or give me a call for those that have my number.

Cheers,

James

Foursomes (played properly, with partners walking ahead) is pretty much the only way we get round and out again in time on the Monday morning.  On the Tuesday morning, we have 5 & 1/2 hours between tee times.  Almost any format works in the morning, if we keep moving.

Are we playing 4bbb on both days in the afternoon?

Is there an option for those that want to to go out again on the Wednesday afternoon, separately from the competition?

Food in Nottingham sounds ideal on Monday evening.

Thanks for the fine regular updates.  I agree with Mark with these additional thoughts.  First morning should be a concerted effort to play proper foursomes, walk ahead.
I would prefer greensomes Tuesday, AM, four ball both afternoons.  Late dinner Monday night should not be a problem if tram is arranged.
These just some random thoughts because I will defer to the preference of our captains.
Really looking forward to seeing Notts and Buda participants.

Steve Wilson, Steve Wilson....what an honour! Captain of the North America BUDA Cup team.

This mantle of captaincy has been bestowed on a champion of the game and a great lover of that golden nectar usquabae. Who else should be the keeper of The Malt other than the chap who arranges to meet one in the heart of The Highlands at no other place than The Whisky Castle in Tomintoul!

Oh yes there should be many a tipple betwixt cup and tee as these games play out. Here I am living vicariously, yet again, as our GCA stalwarts set forth to do battle.

Have a great time gentlemen and yes, that's right, a captain's duty is to write frequent missives as to the state of that play and any vignettes provided by the imbibing!

Cheers Colin

I would have answered sooner but my internet access has been spotty and latterly non existent at my B&B for the past thre days.  Sort of restored now.

Bad as the internet connection my goldf has been worse, so bad I earnestly considered dropping out of the BUDA experience this year but for better or worse I decided not to be a quitter. That being said I'm looking for a volunteer who game is sufficient disarray or who has ahithertonhidden taste for machismo to serve as this captain's batman and fall on his sword simultaneously at the time together as I do.

Parse that.

In light of that admission it seems the least I can do is bring the Whisky, but I may consume the most of it during my rounds.  If Colin were here I'd suggest we trade him back and forth for each match.

As far as dining arrangements on Monday I leave that to those with local experience and knowledge.

Looking at the times I concur with my fellow Netherlands Traffic Camera Scofflaw, Mark Pearce, that foursomes has to be the way to go on Monday morning.  I'm not sure I've participated in   greensomes but I'm all for variety and anything that would expedite play.

In all truth though pace of play is not a primary consideration for me as I intend to  send myself out first so I will have more time to drink more, err, attend to the myriad and burdensome administrative duties that devolve onto the captains in these BUDA showdowns.

More later when I'm confident my internet connection is steady.

Goodness gracious me Steve! I think you should have "parsed", I mean passed, on that last malt that you have scoffed judging by the above quotation from your post!
Notwithstanding, your game may be in the doldrums but that can only mean you will be able to pay full attention to your team's requirements and slay The Sassenach!!

No way! It's a once in a lifetime opportunity for a Yank like me!!! Like when you turn 64 (as I did this year) and you get to play the appropriate Beatles song all day. Annoying? Yes! But, it only happens once in lifetime, so you just have to indulge yourself.  ;D
Sorry, I'll try and muster some restraint going forward.

I am pleased to report that the Buda Cup ended "All Square." The North Americans had pulled out to a substantial lead after day one, but the UK team came roaring back (after Mark Pearce arrived, I might add) and the event finished in a tie.

This was one of our best events with the weather cooperating for the most part and the courses some of the best we have seen. I look forward to seeing the photos from all the cameras in evidence.

A massive thank you to Boony for making this event happen. Well done!!!

Mike,

Thanks for the pictures.  The one of Ebeneezer Scrooge, the accountant, is an instant classic.   :)

The young Scottish stud with the world's shortest swing is Michael Graham (not George) - a fine young man and golf enthusiast.  You might want to change the captioning on his pictures.  He's the future of BUDA, so we should be nice to him.

Favorite Notts hole - the 3rd.  A par 5 where a drive will run forever if you hit the fairway and where some of us have a fair chance of getting there in two (although I didn't quite) - the green being protected by subtle features and nasty bunkers. Fun watching long Ben try to chip his 3rd shot back to the green by bouncing it off the road.

Least favorite Notts hole - the 15th - a brute of a par 4, uphill and narrowing down at the green with a green that was significantly enough uphill that I couldn't get a putt up to the pin despite knowing that I needed to bash it.

Lesson learned at this BUDA - I'm not a fan of subtle greens where I can't read the breaks and I'm always reading putts just wrong enough they didn't go in.

Best shot I saw by someone else - Sterling's second shot to the 18th at Notts with the alternate shot match on the line - one down on the last but a stroke coming to us.  With our opponent in trouble, my sage advice to Sterling was to lay up short right and let's make a bogey, net par.  Well, Sterling lines up and takes the fullest turn he's taken all day (while I'm thinking WHAT ......... IS ........... HE ........ DOING!!!!!).  But, you've never seen a more purely struck hybrid from 200 yards that drew beautifully in to 8 feet from the pin.  The hole was won right there and the match ended all square - a gentlemanly result.

Second best shot I saw by someone else - after losing our match to Ben and James somewhat early, Steve Wilson announces on the drop shot 175 yard par 3 13th that he's going to make a hole in one.  He pulls out his driver  :o and pulls one left, banks it off the side of the bunker and has it run down to the hole  ..................  where despite the exhortations of us all it trickles 2 feet past the hole.  Great fun!

My best shot that I didn't see -  at the 10th at NOTTS following a nice cut drive to the left rough I was left with a 117 yards G-wedge blind over a gorse bush and a ridge.  It was well struck, but Michael and I couldn't find it short or long or left.  Before conceding Michael's 8 footer for birdie, I figured I should check the cup - and there it was.  Eagle 2 beats birdie 3.  But, then Michael trounced me the rest of the way.

Thanks to James for all the organizing.

It was good to meet folks again and see a few new faces.  I don't think anybody walked away disappointed even though most looked beat up by Notts  :D

Bryan

Interesting take on Notts 15.  I like the hole because all courses need a few very difficult holes to allow proper golfers to be identified....but it is a ball buster.

Favourite Hole: 16, wonderful shape to the hole, the big cross bunker is a thing of beauty and the green is the most interesting on the course.

Least Favourite Hole: Toss up between 5& 7.  Both are a bit bland in the context of Notts.

Biggest Surprise: 14, this is a very good hole which rarely gets a mention.

Favourite Drive: 17 by miles, the best placed bunkers on the course guard the left side...superb design.

Least Favourite Drive: 6, big hitters have a huge and unreasonable advantage due to the fairway widening

Favourite Approach: Going for the 3rd green in two...its partly great because one knows there is still a decent chance for par if the 2nd goes (and it likely will) astray.

Least Favourite Approach: 17, its hard to reach in two and the pitch on is rather mundane.

Most Awkward Hole: 13, I never know how much yardage to subtract for downhill and subtract/subtract for wind. 11 and 15 are so narrow that they are just plain hard.

Biggest Hope:The course is widened a bit (or rough thinned somewhat) and greens firmed up (never seen the course with greens in top nick).

Biggest Hope II: Nots gets the Walker Cup.

Ciao

Sean, as usual I agree with most of your assessments.  I too thought 15 was not much fun until the last day when Ian told me that the club Captain, Stuart, told him the second shot should be a low run up the hill to the green.   It was like a light went on and I tried it, almost making it up the hill.  Suddenly it became for me a hole to look forward to.  I can't say that thought about #11.  Demanding a straight shot on both the tee and fairway, if you find the fairway.
I think #3 if the most fun hole to play.

Thanks to all for planning and making the effort to participate.

Gentlemen,

It was a real pleasure to be able to show you the club I am lucky enough to play every week. The smiles on your faces after you experienced the entrance drive, the view from the club house or the course itself only highlighted that not only am I lucky to play there, but also lucky enough to have such great friends!

Mike, Great photos! I especially like the one of treasurer Muldoon! Which reminds me, all these thanks are very welcome but Tony also deserves a lot of credit for helping out with the finances and being on hand while I was planning to talk things through and to prompt me into action when I thought I was too busy!

I believe Steve may also have some photos, so I look forward to seeing these and any others anyone else is able to post! Unfortunately I didn't take any photos this year when I usually take quite a few during a Buda...

Bryan, well played with an eagle on 10! I must say, some of the shots I saw (or heard about) this Buda really were some of the best I've seen at any Buda. Steve's tee shot on 13 as described by Bryan above, Mike's long bunker shot on 18 to pile too much pressure on me from the much nearer bunker (and Mike's excellent round in the singles that Ben told us all about) or most of the shots Lou threw at me at Sherwood Forest, or during his comeback during the middle stretch of the course in the singles. It really is a pleasure to play with you guys every year, and see such good golf on display! Now about those handicaps...  ::)   8)   ;D   ;)

Looking forward to hearing further details regarding next year in Ireland! Till then gentlemen, Cheers

Gentlemen,

I'm glad I made such an impression on Mike Whitaker  :) . Thanks to all those who made it to Notts and Sherwood for making my first Buda such an enjoyable few days. A special mention to James for making it all happen and to Tony for his bookkeeping skills and for organising pre Buda golf at Cavendish. If anything Notts exceeded my expectations. What a course. The 16th was the standout hole for me (and not just because I putted into the front bunker in the afternoon four balls). A totally different hole depending on where the hole is cut.

I think an appropriate caption might be

HAVING ROUNDED UP THE USUAL SUSPECTS CAPTAIN RENAULT...

A few things I want to call attention to.

If it wasn't enough that Mike goes out and shoots 76 thus personally re-igniting the eternal argument of CONGU vs. USGA handicapping, he also wears the Deal socks, and stands on the periphery.  Table about being a standout.  I don't blame as if I were in his socks I wouldn't want to associate with any of us either.  It's the Wallace Chesney phenomenon.

Secondly, I want to call attention to shocking decline in the quality of Apple products as these pictures demonstrate.  It is virtually impossible to identify Poulter, Westwood, Rose, McIlroy, McDowell and the other ringers that Conrad summoned in to overcome our insurmountable lead.  I thought it odd he was spending so much time on "business" conference calls. Well we all know what that business was don't we.  I personally had my headhanded to me by a personable Irishman who claimed to be Tony Muldoon, but I think it McDowell wearing lifts.  Can there be another explanation, I ask you?

No hard feelings though.

I was going to thank James for trying to help me with my swing by pointing out that on my practice swing that I eliminate the chopping motion and really rip it.  It was only later that I recognized that this had been pointed only after I admired his spinning pocket watch and listened to the Woody Herman version of Woodchoppers' Ball.

Lastly I'm not making any accusation but if Ben or Ian happen to be missing any valuables I call attention to the position of Rich's left arm in these two pictures.  Since being successfully pickpocketed in Milan last year I'm sensitive to these things.

Given time I could probably impugn the reputation of everyone in these pictures and probably several who didn't make it or were present for the earlier sessions.  Given the edit function the possibility still exists.

That may have to wait though as I'm preparing for the tabloids a tell all memoir, "Reflections on a Failed Captaincy."  In it I point out what a blow it was to my confidence when Lynn presented his son's book "The Captain" and I realized it was about George Thomas instead of me.

That's the 18th behind us, and in all truth the day was finer than the picture shows.  Thanks to James for his efforts, thanks to Notts and  Sherwood Forest for hosting us and thanks to everyone who participated (even those damned ringers).  I wish more people would make their way to some of these gatherings.  We need young blood ( or fresh meat) yes I mean you Michael Graham and Sterling (how is it the most British of names was an American?).

Next year in Ireland, let's make it the biggest BUDA yet.  And speaking of BUDA, for all of you skeptics out there, myself principal among you, there's the fabled BUDA cup in the foreground.

Is it too early to inquire about the dates in Carne next year?

And another question:  is Carne reasonably walkable for an older gent with a dodgy hip and knee?

Congratulations to both teams for a hard won half!   ;D

So has it been settled? We are set for Carne next year?

I propose we sort out a recruiting program directed at some younger GCAers and past participants who have mentioned overseas trips in the past.

Good work you all; where is the physical cup? Featured in one of Tony's corporate groves?

Bill, Ward, et. al.,

Whilst it might be wise to wait for an official announcement from one of those who have arranged it, I was told by a reliable BUDA participant, we do trust him with the money, that it is to be the first weekend in September which by my calendar works out to the 2nd through the 4th at Carne with a round at Enniscrone.  There was talk of playing another course on the way in, but the name, other than beginning with an M, escapes me.

I can't address the walkability issue, but I'm with Ward in suggesting some recruitment of younger members, otherwise these BUDA's and other events are going to become like those family reunions that get smaller and grayer before fading away altogether.  With a year's advance notice perhaps more people can make concrete plans to be there.

Maybe one of those younger guys can carry me.....if necessary.

Bill, Steve, all,

Glad you had a great time.

I'll let Robin start a new thread when he's back from holiday but I'd nominally booked the weekend of 9th and 10th September at Carne with an intro round at Mulranny on the Friday for those who want it and a Singles at Enniscrone on the Monday to finish it off. Cost will be cheap.

Airports to Carne:
Dublin = 4 hrs
Shannon = 2.5 hrs
Knock = 1.5 hrs

As I said, Robin will drive this one.

Bill, it is not the most walkable course, purely because of the mountainous dunes. That said, it is still very walkable. The club only have a fleet of 7 buggies.

I wish I could have seen my way clear to hold off on my upcoming bucket list trip to those precincts in about 4 weeks in order to have a crack next year at a Carne Buda and competing on an all star team for that treasured trophy.  But, I feel like I have to get this trip in now while the getting is good.  Fun to see old familiars in the photos.  I'm thinking that next year the Captains should shop around a team clothing sponsor deal and have Monoxidil and Grecian Formula logos on your golf attire.  The sartorial diversity in the group photo is breathtaking.   ;D

Rather than sartorial diversity I think rag bin might more accurately describe our fashion choices.

Regarding above message, Robin will make an announcement in next few days but the weekend mentioned above has the hotel of choice booked out... So please don't make any firm plans until Robin's post...

Mike Whitaker -

Are those Kentwool socks you are wearing? Do they make knee highs?

Ha ha! Those are official Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club hose. They are very popular in Deal. I have the club tie and the hose... can't pull the trigger on anything else. The jacket is a bit shocking!  :o

At Cavendish the day before Buda, Robin mentioned the first weekend in September as likely dates. That may well have changed, however . Looking forward to hearing about concrete dates.
