Title: 5th Annual Midwest Mashie (Oct. 4-5th) Canterbury GC! - The Aftermath
Post by: George Freeman on June 01, 2014, 09:45:37 AM
UPDATE:  ****Sign-up sheet can be found on Bill's POST #87 of this thread.  Please submit by Sept. 15th.****

Gentlemen and all others,

Another year has passed and another "Midwest Mashie" is upon us (well, almost).  Last year's Mashie up at the Kingsley Club in Northern MI was a great one - it will be hard to beat!!

For 2014, we making our first excursion to the wild wild east: Canterbury Golf Club in metro Cleveland.  The course has a storied past having hosted many championships, including two US Opens, two US Amateurs, a PGA Championship and most recently the 2009 Senior PGA.  I for one am really excited to get know this gem.

The club has been generous enough to offer us up a weekend this fall to house our annual melee.  The man to thank for this opportunity is Bill McKinley - First Assistant Golf Pro at the club.  Bill came to me and offered to host the Mashie.  Just awesome.  He has done all the heavy lifting to this point.  THANKS BILL!

There will be more details to come over the following months (including hopefully a formal entry form with a small deposit); however here are the main items:

Where:
Canterbury Golf Club
22000 S. Woodland Rd.
Beachwood, OH

When:
Saturday and Sunday, October 4th and 5th

Golf:
Round 1 – Saturday afternoon (1pm Shotgun) – Best Ball Teams
Round 2 – Sunday morning (9am Shotgun) – Singles or Team Alternate Shot

Dinner:
Saturday evening after play at the clubhouse

Cost:
$200 for walkers (not including caddie fees)
$260 for riders

Fees include the two rounds of golf and dinner on Saturday evening (but do not include alcoholic beverages).  The club prefers walkers to take caddies if available.

Players will receive a member number for the two days that they can bill food and beverage charges to.  The club will need to get billing addresses to settle up after the event.  They can take credit cards in the golf shop only; other charges (like lunch, halfway house stuff) need to be billed to an account.

Lodging:
The club has an arrangement with the Double Tree hotel in Beachwood.  It is located roughly 5 minutes from the club and the room rate for those siting the "Midwest Mashie" is $99 per night.  Single or double occupancy.  Sixteen rooms have been blocked off, although more can be reserved.  There are a few other hotels nearby (Fairfield Inn, Residence Inn, Super 8, Clarion Hotel, Embassy Sweets in addition to the Double Tree).

George,

Thank you for putting the thread out for the 2014 Mashie at Canterbury.  One minor detail... Can you change the title of the thread to Canterbury Golf Club instead of Canterbury Country Club.  It's kind of a pet peeve with our members and I know it's a minor detail, but if you could change that, I would appreciate it.

Thanks so much!  I look forward to meeting you all in October.

If anyone would like a bookend place to play, please DM me. I can host you at Silver Lake Country Club (30 minutes south near Akron) on either Friday or Monday.

It's one of Larry Packard's earliest (maybe first) 18 hole designs.  True hidden gem if you ask me....but I'm a bit biased.

Unfortunantly I'd only be available to play on Sunday, but may make an appearance for dinner.

Usually the Illinois-Indiana border is the dividing line. The venue keeps moving further east, despite the Western dominance. If this keeps up, the 2020 Mashie will be held at Mission Hills in China.

There'd better be room. The East Team has never quite had enough players who hit every shot straight and solid. There will be a long line of people wanting to play as your fourball teammate. Consider me the first person in it.

Why should either of those be considered a laudable criterion?

Havnig watched Frank play, I'm not sure if it's laudable. His brand of golf seems exceedingly boring to me. I can probably fill out his scorecard before he even plays. His preposterous consistency means he misses out on all the joy of trying to hit a 40 yard slinging hook out of a muddy lie and under some tree branches.

I am, however, extremely jealous of guys like Frank, Pete Pittock, and Dan Moore, among others - guys who just churn out shot after shot on the same trajectory and make the game look so simple. Jason Jones and I make for a more exciting team, but it's pretty damn hard for us to beat the Pete Pittocks of the world.

Hi all,

It looks like there are plenty of people signed up, but if there happens to be room for a newbie, I'm in!  I live in the area (Parma Heights), and would be thrilled to join either team.  I'm also certain my dad (Wayne) would volunteer to be a fill-in if someone had to back out last minute (I'd sign him up too, but I sadly haven't convinced him to join GCA).

Sounds like a great event - if I'm shut out this year, I'll definitely need to keep an eye out for next year.

Adam - Use the Mashie as a tune-up.  I can assure you that the level of competition combined with amount of pressure placed on the Mashie participants will make the Mid-Am feel like an evening round with the wife and kids  ;)

Adam,

With all the strokes you'll be giving, we can ramp up the stakes and number of games to the point where the mid-am will seem like an afternoon at the pitch and putt by comparison... 8)

George -

I have to withdraw my name from the list of interested parties for this year's Mashie. A scheduling issue has come up and I won't be able to make it to Ohio. Nonetheless, I'm confident Team West will still remain in possession of the trophy!

Hope to be back in for 2016.

Thanks

Just to get out in front of it-  Any insinuation that Faley's withdrawal has anything at all to do with the West team's gerrymandering, and the 68 Bill just posted at Kingsley, is utter nonsense and surely beneath the fine character of the East team who have always taken their annual drubbing in this august competition as consumate sportsmen.

It's becoming pretty clear that the West team's run is coming to an end.  Whispers of internal turmoil following their fourth title are proving prescient...accusations of sandbagging, rumors of rampant performance enhancing drug use at the '13 event, and now several early withdrawals by West team stalwarts.  One of last year's top performers is inexplicably sitting out this year and next.  ;)

Hope to be back in for 2016.

Meanwhile, the East team is said to be building momentum approaching the Autumn matches. The as yet unnamed captain has employed the pod system that proved successful for Captain Azinger and the US team at the '08 Ryder Cup.  Insiders say the native NE Ohioans have taken particularly quickly to the system.  East team uniforms were unveiled at a recent team dinner held on Eastern LI, one of several events insiders say has galvanized the East side.  ;D

So much can happen in the 38 days leading up to the annual matches, but numerous experts are now calling for an East team victory on home soil.

Gents,

We are eagerly awaiting this great event at Canterbury!!  Sign ups are trickling in and there's been a few phone calls and PM's about playing.  I just wanted to post this to make sure everyone is on the same page...

We posted the deadline to sign up on the entry form of 9/27, so there's still some time to get your entry form and deposit in.  But we are planning on a nice sized field, about 40, give or take, so if we don't get up to that number by the 27th, we will still take entries after the date.  You can always PM me or call the golf shop at Canterbury 216-561-1914 to let us know that you want to come or if you have any questions about anything.

Thanks for playing and I'm looking forward to seeing you all soon!!

Will you wear a ten-gallon stetson like Hal Sutton?

Hoover, it's tempting. I haven't busted out my 10-gallon since back when we used to go bowling in college. I think it's warped all to hell, but I do have it. Still, Hal Sutton's team lost, so I probably shouldn't dress like him. Instead, I'll be carrying Apex irons in tribute to Ben Hogan, who is 3-0 as Ryder Cup captain. I'm also going to start PM-ing Bill to see if he can get the superintendent to cut down all the rough like Paul Azinger did at Valhalla in 2008. I'm too young to remember any other Ryder Cup-winning captains, so that's the only winning strategy that I've ever observed, unfortunately.

Frank, I'm bummed. I was looking forward to a 6&5 win and trying to get the Harrison twins to retweet word of our victory while we waited for the other fourballs to finish. I hope you and the family are well.

George, are you captaining the West? I think this should be the year that we begin announcing matches publicly. I will gladly sign onto GCA for 30 minutes once team rosters are finalized to live-post the fourball matches for Saturday, and I can't think of anything that would be more entertaining than putting the singles matches on the board after dinner and a few drinks on Saturday night, other than getting Ben Cowan drunk and then getting someone to insist that Muirfield Village is much better than Inverness.

I can't speak to Canterbury's quality - only my excitement to play there next weekend.

What I can speak to is the quality of the Midwest Mashie as an event. If you haven't attended before and are on the fence, you should feel confident that you'll be signing up for one of the most fun tournaments that can be found on GCA or anywhere else. The golf is relaxed and very fun, but still competitive. The fellowship is outstanding. There's just something special about spending a fall weekend in the final dregs of a dwindling golf season playing as part of a team with copious libations and storytelling following every round. In each of the two years I've attended, I've taken home a new favorite course or two, a new favorite beer or two, and a lifelong friend or two. You won't go home disappointed.

Jason, I will speak to the quality of the course. Canterbury is a Golden Age gem. Herb Strong did a remarkable job working this course from the small amount of land he was given. 16 through 18 make for as good a finish as you will find on any course - 610-yard par 5, 230-yard par 3 and 440-yard (uphill) par 4. Canterbury is a beautifully rolling course that is imminently walkable and great fun to play. It has a solid set of greens that will challenge the best with the short stick.

http://www.golfclubatlas.com/courses-by-country/usa/canterbury/ (http://www.golfclubatlas.com/courses-by-country/usa/canterbury/)

If you are on the fence, get down off on and get to Cleveland for the Mashie! You won't be disappointed.

For all confirmed participants:  Please post on this thread which team you will be playing on (based on where you live).  In the past, Chicago has typically been the dividing spot and included in the West team.  Once the teams are set, we'll get some matches set for Saturday.

Confirmed participants are listed on the 1st post of this thread.

All others:  Please give a thumbs up or thumbs down as we're making final preparations for the event.

Yes - it appears that my fellow west-siders are too nervous to travel into enemy territory...

Let's try this again: Canterbury Golf Club will be the new dividing line.  Please resubmit your new team allegiance and we’ll tweak if necessary.

One caveat:  Jason Thurman (I forget where he lives) will remain the East captain regardless of his geographical location.

I hate to see a three time East representative like Bill Steele relegated to play for the Dark Side. To me, continuity is more important than having the geography exactly correct. If others agree, my records show the following returning veterans (I've also slotted in rookies who have claimed one side or the other):

East –
Thurman
Fry
Finn
Cowan
Taylor
Sturges
Steele

West –
Freeman
Hoover
Arbuthnot (rookie)
Mosley (rookie)
Royer (rookie)
Marzec (rookie)
Titschinger (rookie - lives roughly three miles west of me - the dividing line in Cincinnati appears to be Mt. Airy Forest)

That leaves both teams with 7 players so far and McKinley, Jackson, Allen, Fuesnte, and Crowe left to be slotted based on geography or preferred allegiance.

As an addendum, this also leaves us at 19 players. Do we have a 20th in the works to make things even? Bill McKinley mentioned in an earlier post the possibility of having a friend join - is that still an option? Could we recruit a member?

Royer (rookie)
Marzec (rookie)
Titschinger (rookie - lives roughly three miles west of me - the dividing line in Cincinnati appears to be Mt. Airy Forest)

That leaves both teams with 7 players so far and McKinley, Jackson, Allen, Fuesnte, and Crowe left to be slotted based on geography or preferred allegiance.

I like it!

At this point, I can only definitively commit for the Saturday round and festivities. We have a newborn at home and I'm still working on a hallpass for the Sunday morning round. Either way, I'm looking forward to getting out and meeting everyone this weekend.

As to the team I would qualify for, I could probably find sufficient ties for either team. Currently, I live primarily south and slightly west of Canterbury, but my wife and her family are from the east side of Cleveland, so I could easily qualify as an honorary member of the East if more people are needed to fill out that squad.

I've never been happier for a handicap revision than I was today. My two best scores knocked out. In fairness to me, those scores were from 4 years ago, pre-childREN.

You've got scores from 4 years ago contributing to your handicap? That's not very many rounds posted, although as a parent of a 3-year-old and an 8-month-old I could certainly believe it.

I believe that a handicap should be based on the most 20 recent scores PROVIDED that they happened in the last calendar year. A score should be knocked off our handicaps after 12 months, even if it was our fifth-most recent round. If we're playing so little golf that that a 4-year-old score is one of our 20 most recent rounds, there is no reason to believe that we can play to the level that produced that score.

Anyway, I've been following this thread as a former Ohio resident who would love to be taking part in this event. Distance and two small kids are conspiring against me though. I hope everyone has a great time and that we can get a full report afterwards.

Well, after 2 weeks of the best fall weather I can ever remember in Cleveland, it looks like Saturday is the day it turns...high of 52, windy, and some rain.  Accuweather has it feeling like 40 degrees at 4 pm...Looks like it's time to dig out the cold weather gear!

I've got a 3-year-old and a 13-month-old. Between that, and 6 months of double mortgage in 2012/2013, there wasn't a whole lot of golf played. Didn't keep a handicap in 2012 and 2013. When I did play, it was formats that wouldn't have allowed me to post (scramble, etc.). Reinstated it this year because I knew I would play enough.

It also doesn't help that the course I've been playing the most has a very low slope/rating. I have some scores from that course that match scores from 3 years ago; but b/c of slope/rating, they have a higher Difference, and thus aren't in my top 10.

Only reason I can play this weekend is because my wife's family lives in Wooster, OH; Canterbury being slightly over an hour away. Good excuse to drop off the grandkids while daddy plays golf.

I don't want to speak for Bill, but it may help pairings if we know handicaps in advance. I'm assuming most guys would prefer to play against players of similar skill. I know ballpark indexes for a lot of the East guys, but don't have a clue about Steele, Allen, Fuesnte, or Housteau, nor the rookies on the West outside of Criss.

Captain McKinley and I will be logging on tomorrow at 8 PM EST to live-post the matches for Saturday's fourball. This will be must-see GCA entertainment and I encourage everyone to follow along. Last call for any pairing preferences for East teamers - get them in by tomorrow evening so that I can incorporate them. On a related note, I will no doubt begin tweeting this fine event sometime tomorrow using the hashtag #Mashie2014.

Also, if anyone is getting to town early and is interested in meeting up for dinner/drinks Friday night, let me know. I'm open to suggestions for a location, as I know we have a few locals who will be around. My preference would probably be downtown or the Beachwood area, whatever is most convenient.

Hoover, you and Criss Titschinger should pair up. You'll enjoy each other's optimism.

For anyone not from NE Ohio, I strongly encourage you to make at least one trip to Swenson's. I'm not sure how close to Beachwood is the nearest location, but if you like classic drive-in burgers, you won't be disappointed.

The Winking Lizard is also a great NE Ohio sports bar/restaurant.

Others can chime in with suggestions. I'm not a Cleveland expert as I grew up in the Akron-Canton area, but there are lots of good suggestions. The Ohio City bar/food scene is very good if you're looking to go downtown.

All bright orange, yes. My Granny is knitting us special sweaters with East team flags and a jagged likeness of the Mashie embroidered into them as well. The RealTree Outdoors pattern on the East team flag will obviously go great with blaze orange pants.

Seeing the rather weak commitment from the usual cast of characters for Team West, can we declare the winning team at this year's Mashie as "Team East," at least for purposes of posterity? That way, next year Team West will be reminded of their shame.

When I am not golfing, I am usually eating, so here are some other thoughts on food for those around Friday night.

If you are staying near the course and like a good steak, Red the Steakhouse is outstanding, though not cheap. Next door is Moxie, more eclectic, but every bit as good. Same owners.

If you head east on Chagrin Blvd you will hit Eton, a collection of upscale stores and a number of restaurants, including Paladar Latin Kitchen (excellent), B Spot (Iron Chef Mike Symon's burger & beer joint), Taza (great Middle Eastern), Mitchell's Fish Market (a solid seafood place) and chains like Fleming's and Bravo.

If any of the East Team want to tie one on, I would second Brian's choice of the Ohio City neighborhood. It is a bit of a haul (on the near West Side of Cleveland), but has a great mix of restaurants and bars, including Great Lakes Brewing Co. Other great options for food here include Crop, Flying Fig, Bar Cento and Black Pig. There are probably another dozen places up and down the street offering a variety of food and libations. If you are a cocktail drinker and not up to driving so far, try the Katz Club in Cleveland Heights. It is housed in an old railroad dining car, and they know how to mix a proper Sazerac.

Drink up, Shriners.

Michael Symon's B Spot is supposed to be excellent for burgers and beer. One just opened here in Columbus, so I would definitely be interested in checking that place out. But I'm essentially a follower more than a leader, so I'll go with the crowd in terms of dinner/drinks.

I'm a 6.4 right now - not sure where that leaves me at Canterbury.  Can't wait for tonight's must watch captains event!

As far as dinner is concerned, there have been some good suggestions (B-Spot, Paladar, and Moxie are my favorites over near Beachwood), but for first timers I'd definitely recommend Melt in Cleveland Heights.  It's not very far from either downtown or Beachwood, and the sandwiches are some of the best you'll ever have (technically they're grilled cheese sandwiches, but they're huge).  With a great beer list, the normal 30-45 minute wait for a table should go by in no time!

If you happen to go to Ohio City, Crop Bistro is my favorite and is also the most impressive for out of towners. It's a little nicer, so if you're looking for much more casual, Town Hall, Bier Markt, and Market Garden are all pretty neat places with pretty decent food.  Great Lakes has really good food (and great beer of course), but you might find an hour or more wait there.

Would love to join, but we unfortunately already have plans for Friday night.  See you all Saturday!

Blue    72.0   133   21
White 70.8   129   20

I'm driving in Saturday morning. Does anyone know roughly how much the tolls will be coming from Detroit?

Before we begin this evening's festivities, we have a trade to announce.

The East Team has acquired Mr. Jackson from the West team for cash considerations and a 2017 first-round pick. With news that Bill Steele will only be able to play on Sunday, we feel that this trade will allow us to reap the benefits of having two single-day mercenaries on our team.

With that said, I think it's time to begin selecting the pairings for Saturday. Bill, you are on the clock...

I'm sorry to see Mark Jackson go, but if wish him the best and I'm sure he understands that this is just all part of the business. I have no doubt he will handle this with the same class and professionalism that has made him such an exemplary member of the West Team.

Now on to the match selections...

My first fourball pairing is the Columbus connection of Brian Hoover & Michael Marzec

What better way to add to the greatest rivalry in all of college American sports than to have the Columbus guys take on a pair of Michiganders. Nevermind the fact that one of them attended OSU himself.

Hoover and Marzec will take on Ben Cowan and Ryan Taylor.

For match 2, the East team will send out a pair of fine Ohioans and East team veterans: Chris Sturges and Brian Finn.

In some circles I've heard the Royer/Crowe team referred to as GCA's version of Speith/Reed.

Next up for the west team will be Bill McKinley & Mr. Midwest Mashie himself, George Freeman

The Pro and the Godfather of the Mashie. You don't get much more experience in one grouping than that. The East team will counter with a pair of rookies who have poise beyond their Mashie years. Consider them golf's version of Russell Wilson, and as I browse to ESPN.com and see this headline (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/11628596/seattle-seahawks-quarterback-russell-wilson-writes-column-used-bully), I can't help but think they're likely to administer a beatdown as well... Allen and Fuente.

For match four, the East will send out Captain Thurm and Ken Fry.

Arbuthnot is ArbuthNOT gonna win against Mark Jackson!

That's day one queued up and ready for history to be written. East teamers, remember to bring your parkas, wool socks, and mittens. If you're wearing spikeless shoes, consider driving some nails into them for traction in the ice and wind and rain.

Thanks to Captain McKinley for meeting up online for this sideshow. For those interested in getting together tomorrow night, I'm leaning toward Ohio City around 8:15-ish to give everyone sneaking in some early golf plenty of time to finish and get cleaned up. Give me a heads-up if you're interested and I'll see if I can get a reservation somewhere.

Looking forward to it. Safe travels everyone.

Wow...squaring off against a member of my home club (D. Royer)...the Mashie's own 'brother against brother.'  It's a good thing I'll have Sturges on my side!  Looking forward to a great event.

It's just like when Kirk had to fight Spock on Star Trek. Best friends forced to do battle!

C'mon Hoover...I expected a famous Civil War battle reference from you, not some Star Trek crap.  Figures, since you are a Westie.

Considering the forecast...could some of you Cincinnati and Dayton guys bring a couple of hovercrafts up from Windy Knoll?

EDIT:  SERIOUS QUESTION...do we need a jacket for dinner at Canterbury?

Good question Brian, Sorry I didn't see it last night.  No a jacket is NOT required for dinner tomorrow night.  I'm sure some guys will have one, but all that we ask is a change of shoes/clothes from what you wear that day on the course.

See you all tomorrow!!

If the weather is not a total washout on Friday,  I believe we have at least one opening at Kirtland around 1:30 in the afternoon. If interested, please let me know. I'll be driving up from Columbus regardless of weather.

Argh! Wish I could play. I have a business lunch I can't get avoid so can't get there in time. Enjoy!

If things change just let me know!

Brian:

I was really bummed to miss out, but as I watch it rain buckets outside my office window, I'm getting an attitude adjustment. I am hoping that by some fluke the heavy stuff missed you guys.

Another outstanding Mashie is in the books. Thanks again to George and Bill for making everything happen. This continues to be one of my favorite weekends every year, and the tournament finally has a winning team that lives up to the standards of the championship itself. The sun has set on the West and risen on the East.

Thank you Jason for Captaining the East to victory!   Thank you both George and Bill for setting this great weekend up.  And most importantly, Thank you Canterbury employees and members for making us all feel so welcome.
It was wonderful to meet new people and to put faces with names, along with seeing and playing with friends from past events.
Looking forward to next years Mashie!

What a great Mashie!  Huge thanks to Bill McKinley and everyone at Canterbury for welcoming and taking such good care of us all weekend.  Thanks to George Freeman for organizing another outstanding event.  Congratulations to Captain Thurman on leading us to victory...the first of many for the Big East. It was great fun seeing old friends and meeting several new ones.  Can't wait for 2015.

Chris, Ryan, thanks but the congratulations belongs to you and the rest of the East players. We joke about the pod system, but the East team is full of guys who have now known each other for several years and the camaraderie is real. Surviving a life-or-death situation together, as Finn and I did when we got stuck in a malfunctioning funicular as a derecho rolled in on Friday forges a strong bond. I don’t know that Eastern kinship contributed anything to our victory, as there’s a real kinship we share with a lot of the West teamers too. It was great to redeem myself a bit against George in our slugfest for a half point on Sunday, and playing against Criss in our personal Battle for Mt. Airy in Saturday’s fourball match along with Ken and Eric was a treat. I hope I learned something from Devin’s short game while playing alongside the international battle between him and Ben Cowan on Sunday, as mine was positively Barkleyesque next to his. Cowan still ground out a crucial East point and kept the conversation going. The worst part about the Mashie may be that there aren’t enough rounds to team up with everyone you’d like to play with. Well, that and the sleet.

For the next year, the wall in my office where the Midwest Mashie will be mounted is every East teamer's wall. If any of you happen to pass through Cincinnati, feel free to stop in and revel in how we made history together. On a course that boasts winners like Nicklaus, Palmer, Hagen, and O’Meara, you can now add the following names:

Ben Cowan
Brian Finn
Ken Fry
Al Fuente
Mark Jackson
Bill Steele
Chris Sturges
Ryan Taylor
Jason Thurman

I’ve gotta say, the Cowan Grill has a nice ring to it.

Thanks to Bill, George and Jason for their hard work in getting the event organized and the pairings put together, and to the Canterbury staff, caddies and members for making us all feel welcome at their club.

Congratulations to the East team for a hard-fought and well-deserved victory.  But I would be remiss in not expressing some frustration that those of us who were outcast from the East in the interest of enabling the West to field a team are the forgotten victims here.  We are the red-headed stepchildren of the East--forced to compete on a team that isn't our own and cast aside by our victorious East brethren.  I ask you, when you celebrate East's victory, think of us who have been unable to share in the glory.

Super huge thanks to Bill and George for setting up and executing this year's Mashie, my first. Bill is a consummate professional, and George, my four-ball partner, made sure I never had to sweat.

Thank you to all the members and staff at Canterbury for allowing us to visit their wonderful club. Everything from the course, to the locker room, to the grill, to the dining hall and dinner, was top-notch. I hope that I will someday return—and get another crack at the fearsome 15th!

To all the members of GCA in attendance—it was great to meet everyone, put faces to names, and to see several guys again. A special word of thanks to my patient playing partners: The time shared walking those fairways, in the footsteps of the game's greats, will not be forgotten.

Congrats to the East team, even though almost all of us would've been on the real East team. So in the end, we all won!

Thanks Bill McKinley for organizing the weekend and making everyone feel at home.  The staff treated everyone like a member.  Canterbury has incredible history and really added to the experience this past weekend.

Thanks to George Freeman for spearheading another successful Mashie and Jason Thurman for being the East Team's Paul Azinger.

What I enjoy most about the Mashie is meeting new guys and catching up with the old.  Regardless of team or hometown, each man is fun to play 18 with, have dinner with and have a drink with.

Thanks guys.  Looking forward to 2015 already.

Kudos, indeed, to George for leading the way on the 2014 Mashie and to Captain Bill for his valiant efforts to lead Team East 2 against Team East 1. We may have fallen short, but we acquitted ourselves well for a team that was largely a bunch of rookies.

Bill was a gracious host and Canterbury was a fitting venue, which withstood the rain to provide a reasonably fast course. Hand up if you putted off at least one green over the weekend!

Thanks to my Day 1 partner, Brian Hoover, and opponents Ben Cowan and Ryan Taylor. Great company and gentlemen with whom I expect to play many more rounds.

Thanks to Chris Sturges, who kept me amused with crazy stories through the round (ask him about the dead guy...) and envious of all the courses he has played (70 this year alone!). Watch for his Confidential Guide to Cleveland Munis at a bookstore near you. (Are there any Sturges 10s?)

And thanks as well to Dave Royer and Ken Fry, who battled alongside Chris and I in the wind and cold on Sunday, though after seeing his drives, I think Fry needs to be tested prior to next year's competition for PEDs...

Congrats to Team East 1 for winning this intrasquad scrimmage. If they will have me next year, I would be honored to play for the Real West. I may live in Cleveland, but I am West to to the bone.

Really enjoyed being welcomed by a great group of guys - this was my first GCA outing and definitely won't be the last (although it's hopefully the last with sleet)!  Thanks to everyone who put this together - what a fantastic course.  The course conditions were incredible considering the time of year, and I only had one issue with the difficult setup - the magnet on number 12 that somehow pulled Jason's ball back into the hole after it slammed into the back of the cup and popped out onto the other side.  Criss and I had some momentum going into this hole, and somehow the magnet didn't work for our putts, so it was just a killer.

It was great to meet you all - can't wait for the next one!

Wow. That's really all I have to say after this past weekend.

I know I'm one of the few on this board who haven't played a course of that quality, but I'm still blown away from the whole experience.

First and foremost, thanks to Bill and the staff at Canterbury. Top notch operation all the way around. Couldn't have been more accommodating. Course was in phenomenal shape.

Next thanks go to all my playing partners. I'm sorry I chose a very bad weekend to forget how to play golf, and I appreciate your patience as I suffered a complete mental breakdown. Erik especially for being a great teammate on Saturday. Should've got one back on 18 to continue that match, but c'est la vie. That putt Thurman holed at 12, as Erik described below, was one of the damnest things I've ever seen on a golf course.

Final thanks goes to Ken Fry, who volunteered to work with me on the range Saturday night. The tips helped, but I couldn't bring them to the course Sunday. Keeping my them in my notebook though.

Yes, all the driving back and forth probably didn't help. Something I'll keep in mind for upcoming Mashies.

Hope to see you all again soon!

Any pictures of the actual course? Ran has a profile up but I'd love to see more.

I managed a few action shots on both days that give a little hint of the course. Unfortunately, they are limited to 3 holes, but they give a good sense of the tumbling fairways and blind tee shots. The par 3 17th is a great one-shotter and a bear from the tees we played. No idea how it is listed as just the 14th handicap hole.

1. Brian Hoover showing great form from the right rough on No. 13 (Par 5, 480 yards)

(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr345/MGMarch_2009/IMG_6835.jpg) (http://s498.photobucket.com/user/MGMarch_2009/media/IMG_6835.jpg.html)

2. Ben Cowan taking dead aim with his third shot into No. 13

3. Ryan Taylor striping a tee shot on No. 14 (Par 4, 370 yards)

4. Dave Royer tackles the intimidating tee shot on No. 17 (Par 3, 197 yards)

(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr345/MGMarch_2009/IMG_6841.jpg) (http://s498.photobucket.com/user/MGMarch_2009/media/IMG_6841.jpg.html)

5. Same shot, featuring Chris Sturges (and part of my thumb)

(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr345/MGMarch_2009/IMG_6840.jpg) (http://s498.photobucket.com/user/MGMarch_2009/media/IMG_6840.jpg.html)

6. Ken Fry keeps a close eye on his drive on No. 18 (Par 4, 401 yards)

(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr345/MGMarch_2009/IMG_6843.jpg) (http://s498.photobucket.com/user/MGMarch_2009/media/IMG_6843.jpg.html)

And, lest any of our Sunday group be accused of riding a cart on this magnificent course, that was left when they drove us out for the shotgun start! They were preparing to take our clubs in when we decided to play the 18th one more time.

Unfortunately, I did not get any photos of the sleet...

More pics:

Hole 6 (approach) - Short par 5. Reachable in two if you find the fairway off the tee. Scary approach shot with this front-middle right pin set over the bunker.

Hole 15 (tee) - One of the best par 4's on the course. Down and up par 4. 3 wood, 5 wood or hybrid lay-up off the tee. Uphill and blind approach from the left fairway. I assume the green is more visible from the right fairway which requires a more aggressive line off the tee. (I came in from the left) Looks like trees have been removed down the left side.

That's not too much colder than the weather we had the weekend of the Mashie. It was unfortunate we had such lousy NE Ohio weather that weekend. The entire month of September and the following weeks were perfect. That's just the way it goes in NE Ohio.

But I applaud you for thinking about golf during the dreary days of winter. I think getting a club to give up a weekend in August is going to be a stretch, unfortunately. I also think that August is a tough month with people being on family vacations, etc.

I wasn't able to make it to Canterbury this year unfortunately, but I had a great time last year at Kingsley, albeit I was on the losing side...

I have no idea about the logistics or what the status will be for Renaissance Golf's new course at Forest Dunes – but that could potentially be a great location and perhaps a tour of the routing/grow-in could be facilitated and depending on Tom's schedule even a brief presentation could be arranged.

I would think that would be a weekend not to be missed...

If the grow-in would allow, that would be amazing.  Although several rounds on the current course would also be great...potentially a little expensive though.  Plus we can't let you Michigan guys have all the fun.

I trust The Godfather's judgment. I do hope that the Mashie remains a fall event. It also gives the event its own character as opposed to the numerous summer gatherings we already have. Good beer tastes better in the fall, the bonfires feel warmer, and the harvest-season food really hits the spot after 36 holes. Most importantly, Midwestern golf courses are at their best in the fall - the weather may be fickle sometimes, but Canterbury's playing surfaces were just awesome, as were Kingsley's the year before and The Fort/Broadmoor's before that.

I can think of about 30 locations and about 100 courses that would make great host sites. One of these years we'll have to venture into Missouri, Iowa, or Minnesota. A truly urban Mashie in Chicago could be great, though I must apologize in advance to the East Team captain for staying out until 4 or 5 on Saturday night and showing up on Sunday wearing the same clothes that I slept in. There are tons of great sites scattered around Indiana and Ohio and Michigan and even Wisconsin that I already know about, but I also don't doubt The Godfather's ability to come up with a great spot that I know very little about.

Regardless of where it is, I'll be there with the East Team's rightful trophy riding shotgun and ready to ride home with the 2015 East Team captain.

Also, I'm spinning Rick's post off into another thread.

As a contributor to the first two Mashie's, I would like to know when Minnesota is going to host? I'm sure the MN GCA contingent would throw a heck of an event at either one or a number of our home courses.

We would have the possibility of reasonable access to 4 (5?) high-quality private clubs in the area, plus if we wanted to we could try to set up a round at the recently renovated Keller GC.
Also consider the weather in Minnesota around the end of September and early October is all-world with cool nights and highs around 65-75*.
Every other state, outside of Illinois in the Midwest has hosted already...Michigan (x2), Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin.
We have an international airport located in the middle of the country, making visits from GCAers from all over the country possible.
Jason Topp lives here... do I need to go on?

Jason Topp lives here... do I need to go on?

Pat is absolutely right (and it has nothing to do with me now being a Minnesota resident).

Bill McKinley is the expert on Canterbury, so he is the one to ask for all questions Canterbury. Mike LoPrest, the super, is implementing a gradual tree removal program. There is no parkland course that I know with better turf than Canterbury, so the trees absolutely do not negatively impact the turf. The fairways and approaches are superb.

Pat,
I know I'd be up for a journey to the north...as long as you can guarantee it won't snow  :)  My wife's best friend also lives in Minneapolis so I'm sure I could pawn her off for a trip.

I'd travel from Cincy for a Minnesota Mashie in early-mid September. I've been to MSP 4 times, but haven't managed to step outside the airport. Lots of courses I'd like to see up there.

Among our active Minnesota GCAers, we have members at Town & Country (1893, Ben Schurmeier w/ a little Tilly), Midland Hills (1920, Raynor), Stillwater (1924/1959, Tom Vardon & Paul Coates) and Windsong Farm (2004, Fought & Lehman) - a little bit of everything. Throw in Keller (1929, Coates - with a 2014 Mandell renovation), and those are the courses that could easily be the sites of a Midwest Mashie.
