For any not aware, all and sundry are invited to Burnham on 14 September. To date I have the following confirmed for 4 times starting at 10:32 and 1 time at 11:22. The first four tee times are 3balls each and the last time can be a 4ball. A word of warning, there are two dormie house 4 balls in front of the last time. So, if anybody needs to make a flight, don't be shy in letting me know you need to be in a forward group. Otherwise, it will be luck of the draw as to who goes out when and with whom. I can only sign in three players and Craig is on a reciprical.
All those folks who are members of English clubs and have a co card let me know. I can try to make the cards valid for the weekend, but I need to know in advance. The cards should also be good at Perranporth if you let them know in advance.
Yank

Craig D - reciprocal
Spangles - county card
Sweet Lou

African Animal
Donal
David T (aka atb) - county card?

Me too. I'm hurt that you didn't remember. :'(
I too am hurt I couldn't remeber three names or how to spell remember :P. These days, I am lucky to have remembered that I created a thread. I did look for the thread to do an update and when I couldn't find it I was convinced I dreamed the whole thing. Ran's a bastido for doing that to a man's mind :o.
Ciao
-
Just in case you missed it, according to Ran last night, it seems likely that this thread too will disappear into the ether. Perhaps if you exercise, your mind won't get bent too much by further developments. ;D
ConnectNC is aware of the problem. I don't know the end result but I imagine that they will rebuild the site to yesterday. That will occur by late tomorrow, I hope.
Though I don't know the final outcome, I imagine that all posts from yesterday through tomorrow might end of being lost for good. Hence, I would NOT post until this problem is resolved as it could be a true waste of time.

Please see first post. I am sure about the 12 who have confirmed, but not so concerning Bryan. The orginal email on this matter doesn't seem to be in the bank.

Sean,
As I should still be in the environs I'd like to put my name down for Burnham & Berrow if there's still an opening. This time I'll pay for any pints I owe you on the spot rather than at a decade's remove and by Aussie messenger.
Regards,
Steve

Sean,

Sean,
I will definitely be there. My airfare is booked and I'm making arrangements with Lynn for pre- and post-Buda. Hopefully the site won't crash again and lose this thread.

Steve, Bryan & Speed
I will have to see if another time is available.
Spangles
I didn't book the dormie; will check on availability on Monday. Although, the dormie only makes sense if you are playing the Saturday afternoon, otherwise you can stay wherever. If you lot are playing Saturday afternoon, I may join you for a game and the night.

See original page for update.
Spangles - sorry, dormie booked.

Burnham has specified times for # of players. I don't know what the exact cut off points are, but its something like opening until 9ish is 2 ball only, 9ish until 11ish 2-3 ball only and after 11:30ish 2-4 ball for the rest of the day. Our first 4 times are in the 2-3 ball time so we can have three guys per time. The group going off at 11 something can have a 4 ball.
Bailey - gotcha for the last slot.
Steve - your tenner was if sent from heaven :D

I think we are staying somewhere further south. I think Thomas was going to look into Saturday night accommodations for post-Westward Ho! Haven't heard anything yet. What are others planning to do? It would be good to be in one spot.

I've taken an executive decision. Whitty, Craig and I (lilkely plus a guest) staying Saturday at the Waterfront Premier Inn, Weston Super Mare.
http://www.premierinn.com/
Twin rooms currently £50.00 inc cc charges. Breakfast at the club about 25 mins away.
They are reliable and usually well run.
NB careful to choose whether you want a double or twin room right on first page of enquiry - saves on red faces later!
Who wouldn't want to experience a Saturday night in the home town of Basil Fawlty?
(probably those who joined me for a Saturday night in Skegness - that's who!)

Drinkin' Joe and I will be at the Duncan Inn in Burnham-on-Sea, close to the golf course. With a pub on site.

Sorry, it's Dunstan House. Unfortunately I got the last two rooms.
Try TripAdvisor.com, search Burnham-on-Sea, there are a number of inns and B&Bs.

I hear thru the grapevine that Chez Wardo is out. We now have two spots open.
For those stuck with accomodation, there is a good Premier Inn not too far away (Lympsham Junction 22 M5). They have twins available on the 13th for £78 per night and 14th for £39 per night. Usually, singles are same price. PIs are plasticy, but they do as advertised.
The Duncan in town is also decent, but its a pub/inn.

Bad news I am afraid. My daughter is shipping off to university that day (all was settled this AM) so I can't play. The tee times are still booked and I am still happy to keep things on track so one less guy shouldn't make much difference. Sorry all, but thats life.
You lot are now 13. If folks like, I can ask permission for one group to play as a 4ball - that will make the spaces for 13 golfers (three 3balls and one 4ball). That way, the 11:22 time can be cancelled.
Ciao
-
That's a great shame that you won't be along Sean. I hope the Uni arrangements go well.
BTW, what tee-times do we have for the Championship course?

Congratulations she's just cleared another hurdle.
Just a word of warning. That's one tough day that no one ever talks about. It's like you've been growing a new limb for nearly 20 years just for the pleasure of self amputating to set it free. Don't say you weren't warned about mixed feelings...
Give it a few weeks and it means more time for ...golf?
So it goes...
Hopefully see you about Christmas time.

I remember that day well. Sean you will too if it's her first year out.
Geoff and I drove two cars to the Greg Norman shootout at Sherwood. Afterward he got in his and drove north to the dorm in Goleta, I drove south back to Riviera to hit some balls. Without saying anything, the assistant pro finally turned to me and said, "ah, we don't need the kid." I guess my long face told it all.

I had a good friend who nearly lost it when he and his wife dropped off their oldest daughter at Texas A & M. According to his wife, when they were leaving the youngest at college, also A & M, the poor man cried like a baby in the dorm embarrassing the family. He was so inconsolable that his wife had to drive home to north Texas.
In contrast, among my happiest days were when our two kids graduated college and were off the payroll. My wife and I had no similar issues when we dropped them both off at UT, five years apart- nor they with it (they still love UT). In fact, our daughter was still in college when my wife decided she wanted to live elsewhere and we relocated to SoCal for three years (we did leave them our forwarding address). Being empty nesters is no bad thing.
Tony Muldoon,
Can you give us some guidance on what we should pack? Is the dress code casual? Do we need to bring a jacket (blazer)? A tie?
-

Once again, sorry for the bail out and kind words. I am certainly not looking forward to the drop off day, but I am happy my daughter wants to leave home. Must have done something right if she doesn't want to hang out with me for the next couple of years :D
Back to Post Buda, for those who are on a different schedule to the main gang, it is possible for me to get a tee time for Saturday, 13 September, mid afternoonish (for those that need to drive). I can only sign in one chap, but thats all it takes for a game. Let me know.

Gentlemen, I too am bailing out due to the deteriorating condition of my injured right knee. Torn meniscus and bone damage was revealed by an MRI last week. I tried to hit balls yesterday and the pain is just getting worse. Sorry to mess up the pairings. Hopefully I'll be back next year with a new knee!
-
Sorry that you're not doing well, Bill. Maybe a new set of knees is all you need (an acquaintance told me of his friend who had both replaced and after an aggressive rehab program for six months, he was back on the course good as new). Hope all works well. Is Joe still going to make it?

You will be missed. Best wishes for a full recovery.

Thanks Lynn. Hoping it doesn't require a full knee replacement but whatever it takes!
Hope you start feeling better soon Bill. Rest that knee, as much as you love golf it can be tempting to push it.
Quite a few guys at my club have had knee replacements, and most were back a lot quicker than you think. It is just a short hospital stay, some rehab, and you are back. No one likes surgery, but the technology and materials they have with these new knees is just amazing.
If you don't make it to the Dixie Cup this year, you will be missed, and we will look forward to see you back on the links soon!
-
I'm also going to have to bail on B & B as I have an opportunity to play Carnoustie and Panmure with a member early the next week. At some point I have to take a break after the golfing blitz.
Sorry to hear about your knee, Bill, hope it all works out with a minimal hiatus.
-
Sorry to hear about the knee Bill. Hope you get back playing and traveling soon. GCA.com needs its active golf tour guide.

Thanks everybody. I will know more after a meeting Wednesday with my new orthopedic surgeon.

Will that remove the broken glass from my kneecap?
-
Gents, I am afraid I am also going to withdraw from Sunday.
This is for two reasons - 1/ Sean's absence. I want to play B&B with its key sponsor (whose invites I have too often declined), and he is now out of action! 2/ I am playing on Saturday at Royal St George's and will not be away from there before 4.30pm. You would not in the normal course organise to play RSG and B&B in successive days - they could hardly be further apart - and Sean's absence has tipped my decision over the edge.
I will be sorry not to see the rest of the crowd. Best wishes to all - I hope you are all golfing well in St Enodoc!
Philip

Well, it looks like you lot are down to 10 men. If folks like, I can try to request two 3balls and one 4ball. As it it now, it will have to be two 3balls and two 2balls. It may be a bit slow for 2ball action as you lot follow a club match VS Porthcawl. Let me know by tomorrow.

Super day. 18-holes on the Championship course plus (for several) 9-holes on the Channel course as well. Shame you couldn't be along too Sean but many thanks for organising.

-
Burnham & Berry on a day that wasn't too windy. It was delightful especially if you have Thomas guiding you.
Here is betting that Sean has never played the Channel course and discovered 3 of the best holes on the entire property, that last 3 on Channel.
-
Lynn
The Channel 8th is the best par 3 on the property and the 9th is exactly the sort of hole the Champ Course could do with. I am also very partial to the 5th, a very fine flatish par 5.
I hope you lot had a fine time and once again, I apologize for my absence.

Sean,
Thanks for organizing this outing. The course was wonderful for the most part with some brilliant and bold greens. It was quite fun to play while also being challenging. A SSS of 72 for a par of 71 from the yellow tees speaks to the challenge.
The Channel course was fun too with Thomas guiding. We had some fun with 80 yard bump and runs, and even putts from that distance.
A picture of 5 happy and natty golfers on the aforesaid 9th green in the gloaming.

Thanks for setting the day up Sean.
I skipped the extra nine with the larger group, because I went back for 36 on the Channel the next day. Also, my swing was awry the first day, and I fixed it the second.
How many birdies did the group record on the ninth?
I managed one in four tries. Did you low cappers have as high a percent? ;)
-
A birdie on the 9th Garland. Well done! As to birdies by others, not as many as bogies unfortunately :)
The B&B club website has some wonderful photos of all the holes on the Channel Course, which for those unfamiliar with it, is only 9-holes but has two tees for each hole and thus combines to a total of 5,819 yds, par-70. Unfortunately some current web glitch means only the 1st hole is watchable on the B&B club website just now. Shame.
Below is a photo of the lovely/wonderful/evil/beastly short 'postage stamp' like par-3 8th hole acquired from the net.
Par-3 117/150 yd 8th-17th hole - this hole doesn't have any bunkers, it just doesn't need them. In fact the whole Channel Course only has 2 or 3 bunkers in total.
Here's a Bing sat-map - http://binged.it/Zr3n7l - the Channel Course is to the left in the sat-map. The 1st tee and last green of the Channel Course are not near the Clubhouse. Instead they are both near to the end of the driving range out towards the seashore. The first four flatter holes go north alongside the coast and the rushes, one flatter hole then turns back whilst the final four holes return southwards mostly in the larger duneland. Are the greens are small.
Anyone have any photos of the Channel Course they could post? Needs a separate thread really.

From left to right: Whitty, Craig Disher, Thomas Dai (its time to change your name since you know who is dead!), Sweet Lou, Lynn
While short, the Channel doesn't give up birdies easily. The course really isn't wide enough and with any wind its arguably tougher than the Champ Course. Bottom line, for the most part, if one plays safe a better score will be had.
Bryan
Yes, Burnham is all that I can handle and then some. I play most of my competitive rounds in the winter when the true measure of a golfer is determined.
