Title: 2012 Photo of the Year Contest - Finalists Posted
Post by: Sven Nilsen on December 04, 2012, 09:29:53 PM
That time of year again.

Here are the rules:

1.  One submission per contestant (all additional shots should be submitted in the expected B-Side thread);

2.  Photos have to have been taken in 2012;

3.  Submission period will run until December 20th (photo must be posted, not linked);

4.  Following the submission period, the Committee will choose five photos as the finalists (to be posted on the 22nd);

5.  Voting on the finalists will be open to all with one vote per participant (votes can be submitted by PM or by post on this thread any time between the 22nd and the 31st); and

6.  The winner will be announced on January 1st and will receive a small token prize in recognition of this incredible achievement.

One final tweak, you're allowed to nominate a picture taken by someone else, and that picture is eligible for the contest and does not count as the photographer's submission.  It does count as your submission.  The prize would go to the actual photo taker, not the submitter.

Good luck, and bring on the pics.

There will be lots of better photos, but it has a great story.
Just before this was taken my son said, "you really get to work here, how cool is that Dad."

The photo was taken by my wife ... its the only time she's ever stepped foot on a golf course.

Reminds me of the time I saw a kid in shorts, followed by his dad, walking dejectedly in the parking lot on my way in to a State Amateur qualify site.  At that time no shorts were allowed and I correctly guessed he got black flagged. I threw him my rain pants and a business card. Next day in the mail box were my rain pants and a note "Thanks, I qualified for the State Amateur"

The Location:
Atop the fairway on #9 at Royal County Down

The Date:
Saturday 11th June, 2012

The Story:
This was my first visit to Royal County Down and I had just one round scheduled in on the Friday. I arrived on the Thursday  afternoon, hopeful of a late game. It had rained all morning and the forecast looked ominous for the remainder of the day. Nevertheless, I went to the clubhouse for a late lunch and starred out the window as the 10th tee slowly went under water.

The next morning wasn't much better, but the rained eased somewhat. Throughout the windy and rainy round, I never once saw the Mountains of Mourne - a view I had long wanted to see. So, I booked another night's accommodation and arranged the second round at 5pm the following day. An overcast but pleasant afternoon provided the magnificent view I had longed wished to see. We played the 9th hole in these overcast conditions and then, as we walked down the 10th, the clouds parted and the sun shone through! I played out the hole, snatched my camera from the golf bag and ran up the dune to be presented with this.....

Tough call on what sort of pic to choose.  I expect there will be many with great exterior views or of a personal nature so I chose to avoid those sort.  As I am fascinated with courses that are kept open to interior views I wanted to pick one of that sort.  I also tried to look for a pic which didn't really have a central focal point and featured more of a textured look - the sort you would see artists try to capture in a painting.

AAAARGHHHH! The image is cropped and presented in lower resolution. Please tell me that the judges will be looking at the photos in the proper aspect ratio and with intended color correction.

If not, please replace it with the par-3 photo (fence limbs in the foreground) as that aspect ratio and composition is as intended.

I was lucky enough to step foot on some great golf courses this year, but this picture makes me smile more than any of them. An early summer evening at the home course with the boy, walking and talking about anything and everything. My dad didn't play so I never experienced father/son golf as a kid, but as an adult I know now that it is one of life's greatest things.

This picture is from this morning.

Carmen mowing the 15th green at Wolf Point.
She has been part of the golf crew from the beginning, doing finish work during construction, dragging hose and walk mowing during grow in, and she mows the greens at Wolf Point. Her husband, Daniel, is a cowboy at the ranch and they are both great people. It is hard to look at the landscape we've built and maintain without thinking of the people involved.

I'll put the other photo up and let you decide which one you want to use, or you can get one of the photo pro's around here to get the full resolution image up with no cropping.

Due to a particularly singular, persistent and peculiar line of inquiry into the impartiality of the Committee, I'd like to clear the air about a couple of things:

1.  Up until last night, the Committee had one member.  "We've" (that being the royal we) decided to open up the ranks to past champions, so this year Mike Benham will have an equal say in deciding the finalists for your vote.

2.  This is really just for the fun of it.  I've really enjoyed seeing the photos posted by everyone over the last couple of years, and hope the same holds true this year.

3.  There is a prize, but it is really a token prize.  Last year I sent Benham a list of golf books to choose from, and I had the one he selected shipped out west.  This year's prize has yet to be determined, and the half of the Committee responsible for starting this thread will be making all related decisions and purchases.  Rest assured, unlike the empty rewards promised in such historic contest threads like "Get Your Name Off the First Page," there will be a prize.

4.  Any comments from the Committee are meant to be taken with a grain of salt, slightly tongue in cheek, but understanding they were made with the utmost sincerity, where appropriate.  We're not talking North Korean judges at the Olympics here.

5.  This Contest is not to be construed as an official GolfClubAtlas.com activity, is not sponsored by GolfClubAtlas.com and the owners and operators of said website are in no way responsible for any activities related hereto.

For those of you who got all this before now, I apologize for the interruption.  For the rest of you, now you know.

Also, here's a thread discussing how to post photos:

Sven,

I just sent you a couple more from the same shoot that afternoon. Most (but not all, oddly) of the photos posted seem to have chromatic irregularities and a lack of sharpness. I'm wondering if the JPEGs lose some of their resolution when transferred. Just out of curiosity, do the photos I sent by email look identical to the ones that you posted on the thread? I'm wondering if there is too much data in the file. I don't shoot raw very often, but usually in the highest definition possible. This might be a compression problem because they are razor sharp and shot with Canon L lenses (14-35; 24-70; 100 Fixed) on either a 60D or 5D at between 320-640 ISO - and never stopped down below 5.6.

That stated, some of the stuff posted takes my breath away. Good luck picking a winner; I would have no idea where to start. Maybe divide it into two categories: One where the subject is focused on the aesthetics of a golf course and the other on shots that capture a special moment in time. Dan Kelly's entry is a beauty by any measuring stick.

Terrific thread.

Some very excellent entries so far.  The resolution in those new cameras is spectacular.

Mine are not an entry.  I didn't take any spectacular pics this year for consideration of a contest.  I just wanted to share a sequence on hole #13 at my home course, a par 4, shortest par 4 on course at 340.  This is a series of images that I am lucky enough to witness, every time I play golf with this man.  He is going to be 81 in a few days.  This is in Oct., 2012.  I get to play with this guy about 2-3X a week.  He carries that distinguished bag every round, rain or shine, cold or hot, and he is proud of earning the right to carry and display that logo from his 3 decades service, retired Marine Corps Major, Steve Kaster.  I missed two months this season due to crumbling body.  I'm 17 years younger than Steve, but he never missed any rounds all year.  Toughest guy I know....  :o 8)

Some great photos so far i am loving this thread.

A few months ago i was lucky enough to play golf across New Zealand and this is a photo from the course at Jacks Point in Queenstown. Whilst certainly not the best course i played (Paraparaumu Beach and Kinloch dead heat) it was easily the most spectacular, even beating Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers. We just don't get these snow capped mountain vistas in Australia.

This from memory is the 8th green.

For interest sake this is the exact same hole (note the ball hasn't moved) just looking the other way. You cant really blame me for missing that birdie putt can you?

First time uploading a picture from Imageshack so hopefully it works.

My dad and Uncle Bob, best friends for over 60 years, been golfing together since their days in Montreal in the early 50's. Figure about 700 plus rounds together if not more.  Uncle Bob now lives in Vancouver, they havent seen each other in 5 years, Uncle Bob came out this summer and they golfed together every day. On the morning of this shot, they both walk into my dad's kitchen wearing nearly identical outfits, not planned. Shot was taken on the 5th East at Hamilton GC. I turned and clicked and kept walking. I had hoped to include another shot of the two of them on the 6th fairway but for some reason I have lost. It would explain these two golfers to a tee. Walking down the fairway, I turn around and see these two 80 years olds, bags still on their shoulders, Uncle Bob is in his golf stance, club in hand and my dad is leaning forward, adjusting Uncle Bob's grip on the club. No doubt explaining Hogan's thought on how to hold the club. A conversation I am sure that has taken place numerous times between these two golf nuts. Both families just loved this shot and some have had it framed for thier own homes.

When: January 8, 2012

Where: 5th Tee, Byrncliff Golf (& Ski) Resort (30 Miles SE of Buffalo)

Why:  Why not?  It started snowing on our way to the course, and we asked "are we forbidden from playing?"  Once cleared, it was an easy decision.

Who:  This beautiful swing belongs to Ron (pink ball perfectly in middle of picture about to draw over the inside-corner bunker). See my B-Side submission for the GCA participants that day.http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,54269.msg1250034.html#msg1250034 (http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,54269.msg1250034.html#msg1250034)

What:  A ridiculously well-balanced swing (note the amount of snow in the spikes) as the blue skies start to break through.  The orange stakes are for the anticipated snowmobile / x-country ski trails.

Nice thread and great photos...I don't listen to rules (outside of golf) just hold firm on my saying your only rules in life are whatever you can get away with and still lay your head down on your pillow at night and sleep like a baby. In my case, I can't get away with much but at least I know it and always sleep like a rock.

I have 3 photos to share:

My favorite photo taken on a golf course (and the first day this year I had anything to do with a buggy, clearly it was bribery! My monsters!)

Then my favorite shot I took myself of a golf course, which I can't seem to improve the resolution of plus normally it's really wide and shows the Pacific, it's an awesome pic that disappointingly profiled here:

Finally my favorite photo taken of me at a golf course:

There are a lot of great photos out here - thanks to everyone who has taken the time to post them.  We certainly do play a great game, with many special people, on some beautiful grounds.

2012 was probably a highlight in my golfing life – I am not sure I will ever have a year better.  The Hundred Hole Hike at Kingsley with some amazing guys, my annual Dormie Society matches, and a great weekend at Ballyneal.

The highlight for me though, in a highlight year, was a morning in October I spent with my wife at Cypress Point.  It was a birthday gift to me for my 40th birthday – a day I will never forget.  This won't win the contest, but to me, it doesn't get any better.

He continues to remind me just how important the people are.  I spent some time with Bill Coore recently and he remarked on the same thing.

All of the glorious golf photo's that will grace this web site were built and maintained and cared for by people you will never meet.

Thanks Don

If anyone can tell me how to unbiggunate this I'd appreciate it.

Simply insert "width=xxx" into the link after the opening [ img ... it should be (img width=600)

Depending on your monitor, browser and graphics settings, 800 should be the maximum width (actually 799) so that, you don't get the slide bar.  And it should look like this with width=600

I'm generally partial to those with at least one golfer in them, but Guy's Cabot picture is pretty striking.

If you photoshop in a black and white Benham it wins for sure.

One of the reasons I'm excited about my trip to Cabot Links in early August!

If anyone's interested, please shoot me an IM.  Hoping to have a couple of foursomes, and will include an overnight to Highland Links.

This is the view that greets me literally each morning as I drive through the gates.  Tough one to photograph though with the light which is normally straight into the lens at that time of day but on this occasion a few weeks ago, a combination of direction of sunrise, colour of the sky and my simple iphone gave me one of my favourite pics for the year.

Josh,

Yep, from the Sunday morning round of The Mashie. That morning I was pretty excited about how some of the pictures would turn out because the light and contrast were so good. They didn't turn out quite as I'd hoped. There are several good shots though, and I should probably post them when I get a chance, either on the Mashie thread or an existing thread featuring The Fort.

By popular demand (or just a few PM's) from the other GCA photo thread, I'm offering my favorite photo of 2012.  While this year was a great one from a golf course perspective, by a long shot this was my favorite photo.  I'm glad I was able to represent Tavistock CC in the pic!  It capped off, as one GCA'er referred to it, my "Forest Gump" year.  If you're going to lose to the Euro's, you might as well party with them!  JRP's pics above do a nice job of capturing things, and hopefully he'll post the pic of us hoisting our own magnums of Moet!

A personal favorite of mine.  Four generations of Blumes enjoying a round at Grand Pines earlier this year.  This photo was used for a Father's Day article in a local golf publication.

For the record:  Left to right:  Jeff Blume (45), Keaton Blume (6), Jay Blume, Jr. (72) and Jay Blume, Sr. (102)

Here's my entry...

The 8th at LACC - North.  A wonderful par 5.  No throwaway shots here.  A good drive will give you the thought of going for the green, a safe drive will leave you with a challenging layup to give yourself the proper angle for a wedge into the green.  The restoration work on this hole was tremendous.  Lots of tree removal to give you a sense of scale and great bunkering on the golfers left side.  The clouds were rolling in and out on the day that we played.  This shot captures some pretty good contrast and I like it! So I  hope you all do too!!

There many things that I really do miss about practicing law at my old firm. But I can say with all honesty that I don't miss the end of year rush to close deals and tax planning transactions. As a tax attorney, i know that this year in particular would be crazuer than ever.  The best feature of being in-house counsel is that I get to rely on law firms for that!

Due to a suggestion made earlier in the thread, the Committee has decided to break the finalists down into two separate groups.  The first group is made up of golf course related photos.  The second has more to do with what golf means to all of us: its traditions, the people we play with and how the game is passed on to future generations.

Please cast your votes for one picture from each group either by posting in this thread or by sending me a PM.

Our apologies to those not nominated, as we greatly enjoyed seeing all of the photos posted.  There were also a number of great photos that were either taken prior to 2012 or were the second photo posted which were not eligible for consideration for the finalists.

Group 1 - The Courses:

1.  Anders Rytter:

2.  Ben Jarvis:

5.  Neil Crafter:

Group 2 - The Game:

1.  Jeff Blume:

2.  Joe Leenheer:

3.  Dan Kelly:

5.  Quinn Thompson:

Finally, perhaps our favorite photo was the one from Tom Yost, but unfortunately we just couldn't find a spot for it in the final 10.  So let's just call it the Eleventh Runner-Up:

#2 and #4, for the simple reason that nothing is simple.

Ten Things I Think I Think (Peter King gets credit for the title.)

I think I liked last year's winner because I had seen nothing like it, ever.

I'm a big fan of golfing families, not so much of photos of them winning awards (BDB.)

I've seen RCD a lot from that vantage point. (BDB)

I really love the Chinese caddies.

I am stunned by the lighting of Anders Rytter's photo. If it doesn't win, there is no justice.

Gib is the most gifted writer in this discussion group. He would own that contest.

Neil Crafter gets width...really gets it!

How do we know that the couple in Dan Kelly's image is golfing?

The Yost photo is no less qualified for the second category than any of the others.

Sepia never gets old.

I'd say based on how you explained the categories #3 and #1, however, the best photo all around is #5 in the second group however I think it's in the wrong category, while all the others are great and about family. 4 generations on the putting green and golfing together, wow, amazing experience!

I thought you were a better judge than that  ;)

Thank you to the Committee for choosing my photo of #9 at RCD as one of the finalists. I knew I struck luck when the sun shone for the first time in days. Fortunately, I was in the right place at the right time (except for the massive dune climb from the 11th tee). It's a view I'll never forget and happy to share!

Good luck to the other finalists. I think it's down to #3 and #4 in the golf course section.

late honorable mention entry:

The late Ralph Livingston III looks on as perennial hickory champ Randy Jensen plays a shot at the Hickory Open at Kingsley.  Photo wasn't taken this year as Ralph was too ill to play, but a major loss to GCA, Kingsley Club and particularly the hickory golfing community.

Special dispensation for Jud's late offering. There is no sense in the committee deciding to time-bar something that stellar.

Oth4rwise, I vote #2 and #1.

County Down, with the Mountains of Mourne rising towards the sky, is the ultimate trump card.

Four generations on the putting green wins for sheer emotional content because chances are, the next time there will only be three.

Jud, great call.

We lost a great one this year and the world of golf and, in particular hickory golf, is a little less well off as we close this year...

Ralph was one of a kind and I am privileged to have known him for a very short time. I am sitting in my office at home looking at a set of T. Stewart hickories I purchased from his collection - very fortunate to have them and I can't wait to take my first swing with them at Kingsley next spring...

The votes have been counted and verified by a reputable accounting firm.

The easy one first, in the People of the Game category, the Four Generations of Blume eked by Quinn's Aunts by a scant four votes:

In the Course category, we have a result that is unprecedented in the storied history of this contest, a tie.  All five photos were separated by less than five votes for first through fifth places, demonstrating the depth of the field.  Without any further ado, your co-champions:
