Title: Perranporth (The Craziest Links in the World) Tour + borrowed pics
Post by: Garland Bayley on March 27, 2012, 08:39:12 PM
"Cruden Bay?  Nah.  Ballybunion?  Nope.  Pennard?  No!

It's Perranporth in Cornwall (Braid)."

Paul Turner

"Perranporth makes every other course I've seen or played seem ridiculously over-built."

Rick Schefchik

"There is almost nothing in the world of golf and in the British Isles that prepared me for Perranporth.  Having seen so many quirky golf courses and loved them, this one does indeed make Painswick and Pennard look benign in spots."

Noel Freeman

"I went back to Perranporth recently and was flabbergasted at the outrageous nature of the design.  I know see where RTJ got his ideas for The Cashen, only Braid didn't have to push dirt about.  The conditions were sporty (or is that spotty?) with the wind out of the east - making for a crazy day of golf.  Perranporth makes some sense with a normal wind, put all those short par 4s downwind and all hell can break lose.  An old friend who was injured walked the course with me and barely uttered a word about the design the whole way round.  His eyes told me all that I needed to know. "

Sean Arble

The course is par 72, 6296 yards. From looking at Google Earth it is clear that they have added tees to increase the yardage. In the case of the 10th tee, it appears you have a crossing of the 1st fairway. In another case, the extension causes you to hit your tee shot across the previous green.

Another tour is at http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,59279.0.html. There is a lot of commentary on the course there. I have added the pictures from there to this tour.

  Never heard of it

That's because it's about as far away from Cruden Bay as one can be in the British Isles

Like to again, great course-played in a gale with sleet and sun.
Nice part of the world.
amazing # of Braid courses that I've really liked-or maybe it's the caravans.

"James Braid and mobile homes?  I'm in love."

Ben Sims -

In that case, be sure to play Brora & Golspie some day. ;)
No Braid at nearby Royal Dornoch, but plenty of mobile homes.

I am going to use the elevation profile from Google Earth with this tour. Unfortunately, it has some glitches, as every profile has a discontinuous change in elevation.

"The great thing about P-porth is you realize the sportyness of the course right from the get go.  The fairway at the first slopes right to left like the Titanic before it went down and during the summer I wonder how you hold the fairway.  The green is no bargain either and falls away from you." Noel Freeman

"A very open and inspiring tee shot down the hill and towards the town of Perranporth. Unless the wind is in the player's face, in which case it can be a strenous opener." Ulrich Mayring

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4238/35864011955_4dc0e7e26d_c.jpg) on Flickr

"The 2nd hole is in my opinion the craziest on the course and should be a compendium of ALL WORLD quirky holes.  The first shot is blind over the dunes and I reckon you need to hit a high cut about 270ish.  If you can hit it near 300 you'll have a shot at seeing the green. If not, then you have
another blind shot that must be hit with a draw to the green over another sand hill.. And the green?  As Paul Turner stated, it is double hollowed and looks right out of NGLA!  One of the best greens I've seen in the United Kingdom." Noel Freeman

"Probably the best hole on the course, this par 5 starts with ideally a left-to-right curving drive towards the signage." Ulrich Mayring

"The second shot is blind for most players and for the first time the question arises on which side of the marker sign it would be best to miss." Ulrich Mayring

"It turns out the left side is bad unless the dunes can be carried. There is more room to the right, although the approach to the green would be blind." Ulrich Mayring

"The green comes into view after making another 90° turn after the dunes. The approach looks straightforward from here, but the green contours are to be reckoned with." Ulrich Mayring

"One of Perranporth's undulated greens. This one has two punchbowl-like dents, that will collect any nearly-perfect ball that tries to get to the back plateau." Ulrich Mayring

"the crazy 2nd, but in truth no more crazy than about half dozen other holes.  On the second shot the direct line to the green is left of the markers, but how much carry is there?  For that matter, how far does one hit a lay-up?" Sean Arble

OUT    36         3158
TOTAL    72         6296

"Yardage, slope, hell everything in modern golf is thrown out at Perranporth.  It is like golf in the old days in the books that show British links in the late 1800s/early 1900s.  Sporty, fun against nature.  We told Tom Doak to go there at Painswick, I wonder what he thought.  Perhaps,
even too quirky for him.

James Braid should be considered the king of quirky golf--Perranporth, Pennard and St. Enodoc, what a resume!

One last thing, Perranporth has perhaps the coolest symbol in golf, very akin to the golf we played there.  In truth, it is a black shadowy saint with a halo and staff facing the sun with a shark below him.  In reality, it looks like the grim reaper.  Quite spectacular.

PPS-those are NOT cart paths, they are crushed sea shell paths.. I don't like the look either, but it is natural." Noel Freeman (pictured below)

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4254/35863974375_cb56086a76_c.jpg) on Flickr

"Okay, much like the hilltop courses I really enjoy, Perranporth is just too wild to be given serious consideration for greatness.  What it lacks in that department is made up for in spades with shot after shot excitement.  I mentioned Ballybunion's Cashen course, the two are quite similar, but Perranporth is much better and a more sensible walk.  Somehow, these classic archies were able to see holes and offer a walk that while may be strenuous, is not crazy.  I am quite surprised that there aren't more par 3s on the course.  The extreme terrain seems to be calling for them, but I guess it is not very satisfactory to have string of short holes.  The Ladies card offers five to the Men's three.  The count is the same for the par 5s.  Indeed, the Ladies card looks very interesting and some of the tees are quite tempting to have a go."

"My first visit to Perranporth was in 1997 (not long before I moved to England) on a word of mouth visit recommended by a mate who played it on a whim while on holiday.  He described Perranporth as a clifftop course, typical English understatement.  Of course, Steel's book missed Perranporth!  Rather oddly, so did Pennink's.  Anyway, I was just as stunned this time as any previous visits.  Much time was spent in a daze wandering around like a lost child while his ice cream melts.  Perranporth is a tough course to remember the details, but that certainly isn't the case for its spirit.  I could play Perranporth tomorrow and have a wonderful sense of adventure - its that magical. 1*  2014" Sean Arble

I was once given great advice by a good friend's father who had led a bon vivant lifestyle after my divorce in 2000 which was don't lament, life is short.  Now while I am a fan of Darwin's Life is Sweet, Brother this thread has caused me to feel lamentation for past days.  I don't know if I miss the car rides, the 36-54 holes a day walking with Paul, the crazy restaurants and night clubs and carousing or just the silent meditation of walking on a links with a good friend but I know the memories that went into this thread have reappeared from my associative memory.  I can literally smell Perranporth at the moment and the mist that came upon the course enshrouding Paul and I for a short time at sunset.

Paul and I were fortunate enough to enjoy my 40th birthday party at Cypress Point last year and I have always thought the famed walk between 15 and 16 is golf's greatest for those of us who will not know the joy of walking down a fairway to win the Masters or Open Championship but I now realize that sense of awe and adventure I felt at Perranporth that day is one of my least bad ones in a golfing anthology--mine.  That said, if the golfing gods are listening, I'm still waiting for a jubilee on my hook issues with the driver which was the greatest impediment to that 2004 trip.

My favourite course, along with St.Enodoc. Not the best but the course I enjoy the most. Short, ridiculously unfair at times, borderline unplayable when the wind gets up but fantastic fun. Haven't been there for years but I'm going back in two months time. Can't wait - especially now I've seen these pictures again which I thought had been lost to the sands of time!

What a crazy track...the first time I can say I got dizzy just looking at the pictured holes on a GCA thread. That said, I'd have a go for sure! Brora, another Braid-influenced track, is one of my all-time favorites in the "golly golf" category. As others have said, it may not be a great golf course, though it certainly has several superb holes in my opinion, but it IS a great time ON golf course. That, and enjoyable company, in concert, are really what makes for a great day on the links!

Cheers,

Incredible thread, thanks Garland. I hope everyone takes a moment to reflect on the amount of work that went into it, from Paul and Noel's pics and thoughtful posts to Garland's analytical additions and more. Amazing.

Next time someone whines about OT threads, point them here and ask them why they didn't contribute... :)

Garland,

great job, thanks for the effort.

It's a fun track, no doubt, but I would count myself as a bit of a sceptic when I read comparisons with Ballybunion and St Enodoc. I don't think that Perranporth is at that level, in fact I have the likes of West Cornwall, Crail Balcomie and Saunton West ahead of it. I do think it is very slightly better than Brora.

For the price a world-beater, of course.

Thanks for putting this together Garland, and thanks to the other contributors as well.  Looks like great fun.   Can anyone imagine something like this getting built today?

The mention of a "caravan" on the 9th hole.  Is that a reference to the trailer houses?  If not what?

Ah Perranporth, all brown and beige and burnt-up and with a bright blue clear sky, just wonderful. I like the reference to a certain green circa half-way round the front-9 at Beau Desert, very apt. Braid and Fowler, hero worship time.

Looking forward to the rest of the recent photos.

Perranporth, a course definitely worth travelling to play.

Seeing my old pics of Perranporth brings up some mixed feelings.   It was a good ego trip to be the first to post a photo tour of such a cool course on GCA, but don't threads like these spoil the mystery.

Trying to find anything about Perranporth 10 or so years ago online was next to impossible, just a few grainy pics and word of mouth.  So Noel and I went there without expecting much; I was thinking along the lines of "it can't be much good... I bet it's only about 6 holes pure "links" and then goes of onto farmland".  So it was such a blast when it turned out to be much more exciting than that.

Are there many hidden gems left?

Again, one of those moments and trips where mystery reigned and surprise ruled the day. Technology and these golf websites create a ton of interest but take the romance out of it all--something technology is doing to my everyday life.. Wouldn't you prefer to be Tom Doak in the early 80s driving and getting lost throughout GB and I with nothing but whispers and opinions of where to play and interaction with the locals?  Rather than research things to death on this website, look thru a photo tour and read a zillion bits of prose on holes by people you don't know, don't have your eye nor your golf game.

Paul, I miss our times together.  Some of the best of my adult life..

You don't know who You are do you? You can't really get at yourself, just as the fingertip can't touch itself and the teeth can't bite themselves. And that's because You really want a surprise- Alan Watts.

Yes, my first visit to Perranporth was maybe 15 years ago (not long before I moved to England) - a word of mouth visit from a mate who played it on a whim while on holiday.  He described Perranporth as a clifftop course.  Of course, Steel's book even missed Perranporth!  Rather oddly, so did Pennink's.  Anyway, I was stunned at how much I didn't remember.  There were really only about half a dozen instances that I really knew the score.  Its a tough course to remember details of, but that certainly isn't the case for its spirit.  I could play Perranporth tomorrow and have a wonderful sense of adventure - its that magical.

There are hidden gems left only because people are doubtful of reports like you were concerning Perranporth.  Unless a big wig proclaims something to be the case than that sense of doubt is more heightened.

Ciao

GJ,
Your tour exposes a completely radical course that I have never heard mentioned prior to your posting. The only thing I have played that even approaches it's look is Carne, the great Hackett gem in Belmulett, Ireland. The back nine there has several holes with pretty crazy elevation and radical angle changes shot to shot, but it only gets in the ball park. This Perranporth is a breed apart. Thank's for putting this tour together. It's a truly stunning revelation.

After Kalen posted a link to a youtube video about North Berwick that I watched, youtube began suggesting links course videos to me again. Fortunately, they suggested a video about Perranporth, which turned out to be part of a 6 part series. The videos can perhaps better give the feel of the course than our still pictures can, and I enjoyed my revisit to Perranporth through these videos. Hopefully, others will find these enjoyable too.

My apologies for the length of the totality of the 6 videos.

And, my apologies for the sight of a buggy on a beloved links! If a retirement age, 300 pound hacker can walk and play 36 in a day at Perranporth, I don't see why someone needs a buggy to play 3 holes a day. ???

Perhaps I should have mentioned in the previous post that one of the players in the videos is former European Tour player Chris Gill who is the pro at Newquay Golf Club, which is a short distance from Perranporth, and knows the course very well.

One of his primary points is that you don't have to be long to be challenging. They played two man scrambles, and the only bogey was on the shortest hole on the course. Knowing the course, Chris was the only one able to get his tee shot with a wedge on the green on that hole.

Having only played it for the first time a couple of months ago, I'd say Perranporth is among a very small group of truly unique courses I have seen.  Whatever work they do, I hope changes nothing about the course's character.  It sounds like Lobb is aligned with the members' desires, which is promising.  When I visited, the members we met were (rightfully) very proud of the course and how different it was, even when compared to its nearest neighbors.
