Title: A Listing of Historic Articles
Post by: Chris Buie on March 14, 2012, 09:08:36 AM
A while back I posted a link to this website I stumbled on. There are many things on there but what is relevant here is that they have a lot, if not all, of the old Golf Illustrated and American Golfer magazines.

I look through it from time to time and bookmarked some articles that I enjoyed. You may enjoy looking through some of them as well.

Chris:

I still have many photocopies of old articles like those from my days perusing the basement of the Cornell Ag School library.  Some terrific stuff in them.  One of my favorite articles of all was Sir Ernest Holderness' list of favorite golf holes, which featured such courses as St. Enodoc, Pennard and Dornoch ... courses rarely talked about in those days.

Tom, is this the article you were talking about?

http://www.la84foundation.org/SportsLibrary/GolfIllustrated/1928/gi284h.pdf (http://www.la84foundation.org/SportsLibrary/GolfIllustrated/1928/gi284h.pdf)

I was thinking about doing a compilation of these types of articles - similar to Ed Oden's terrific routing and maps thread - but I'm kind of focused on some other matters. It might be a good idea for someone else to do if they feel inclined.

There are a couple of articles I read recently that may be of interest to you. One is an editorial called "The Farce of Olympic Golf":

(BTW, I don't think it is a farce.)

Another is an interesting looking place on Long Island I don't recall hearing of before.

Chris,  thanks for posting the link Tom referred to.  Upon glancing at the author's 18 favorite holes, it struck me as why he'd choose #18 at Machrihanish, one of the weakest holes in Scotland.  Then I remember how the old green sat roughly where the pro shop lies today.  What a hole it must have been.

Here is a cool pic from the front of American Golfer -- this was right before the first tournament. This is an interesting view of the 4th green (then the 13th). I love the tounge that wraps around the bunker, and look how open it is. Very cool stuff. Thanks for finding it. Rob
