Title: Old Mac: What are these strange..?
Post by: Brett_Morrissy on August 10, 2010, 05:57:34 AM
On our recent trip to Old Macdonald, after teeing off to the magnificent 5th hole - "Short" - I noticed these strange turf patterns, at first I thought perhaps it was drainage lines, or leaking irrigation lines and I am sure it is something very simple, but can someone tell me what it is?

Two images below, first is a wider view of the position, in the broken ground short of the green complex, and the second is a closer view, note the arcs.

Thanks
Brett

Looks like the taller grass is following a drain line.  Either slightly better soil conditions over the line or the roots have found some moisture.   Looks like a great little hole with such a huge green.

Brett:

I've noticed the same thing, and I'm not positive as to the answer to your question.  I don't think there is much of any drainage in that area, so I suspect that it is just the tops of some irrigation trenches which accidentally got backfilled with a heavier soil mix than everything else.  There was a bit of heavier soil in that corner of the course.  But, Jim Urbina may come on and tell us it's something else.

Those patterns are simply where the irrigation plow trenched through 'richer' sandy soil, and in so doing a better growing environment was created along those trench lines.

thanks Tom for sorting that out.  ;D

why would the trenching plow for the irrigation work in these curved lines? - that it why I thought it was unusual - becuase of the shape - it looks like long lengths of hose that drip and the grass is grwon up next to and around it.

That's where the Oregon Snipe lives.  Be careful in there!
