Title: Your "other" passionate interests
Post by: David Stamm on August 16, 2007, 11:25:42 AM
I know that this is OT and what a hot button topic that has been lately, but since I may never get the privilege of meeting alot of you here, I just thought it would be nice to know the members a little better.

Outside golf architecture, what are some of your other passions (hobbies)? I know we have some well rounded people here, I just thought it would be interesting to hear.   What else makes you tick?

I'll start. Outside of golf, I'm a huge road racing fan. Formula One, Le Mans series, etc. Even though tevo was invented, I still find myself getting up at 4am and watching the races live from Europe. I know, dumb. So I guess you can call me a motorhead.

I love to read.

Lately it's been thriller fiction, but it ranges from non-fiction (golf, politics, economics, math, physics) to almost any type of fiction. I even recently tried to read some Shakespeare, in deference to his many fans and defenders on this site.

I guess I'd also have to list this site as a passion, though it might be closer to an obsession.

Outside of those, lately it's pretty much just been being a dad.

Outside of the required passions (family, etc.):

Arsenal Football club, and all things related to the greatest sport there is.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, but not really baseball in general all that passionately.

The athletic teams and other aspects of Santa Clara University.

USC Trojan football

The San Jose Sharks passionately, hockey as a sport not so much (that is, I love the sport but can't see myself watching games that don't involve the Sharks).

The Olympics and other international sporting events.

Irish history

Beer, wine and spirits

Hang gliding, alligator wrestling, big-game hunting, falconry, aeronautics, gourmet cooking and macrame.

TH

ps - OK that last entry is BS, but it was the listing under "interests" in my bio for a work directory once... the idiots didn't know I was kidding....

AWESOME, TOTALLY AWESOME!

Surfing's a way of life, it's no hobby.  It's a way of looking at that wave and saying "hey bud, let's party!."

Sorry, couldn't resist.  I live by the teachings of Jeff Spicoli.

Sad part is I am a 45 handicap surfer... I have done it, just never very well.  I do very much admire those who can party with waves.

Very avid, yet rational Boston Red Sox fan.  (I know alot about the game, thus I realize even the good teams lose 65 games a year).  We have a share in a pair of season tickets in the 4th row in box 80 down the left field line at Fenway.

Reader and collector of Michael Crichton books.  I have a copy of every one of his books, including several he wrote during med school and after under the names John Lange and Michael Douglas.  I actually paid about $200 for a paperback of his first novel, published in the late 60s.  I have a few first editions, but nothing real valuable.

Lover of Labrador Retreivers.  While growing up, my family has had two blacks and two yellows (two at a time), my aunt has a chocolate, and now my sister has a yellow puppy.  I haven't been able to convince my fiance that I will not love a yorkshire terrier, as it will be about 50 pounds too small.

Someday, when Jeremy Jacobs sells the team, I will be a Bruins fan again.  I love watching the D1 college hockey teams though, and D3 when it involves Middlebury.

My other golf-related interest is that I collect vintage scorecards, preferably pre-stymie.  I have about 1000 so far, and have given a few to various clubs for their archives.  I have a few from many of the most famous clubs, my favorites are the only existing card featuring the NLE third nine at my home course, and a card from Macrihanish from 1896.

Music, especially, as most on here know. Though I can only aspire to the depth of knowledge in music that others on the site has shown. I believe it's Mark Rowlinson who has shown a rather vast knowledge of classical theory.

My girl, as those close to me know there's a lot going on with that and she really is a motivation. You know you've found "the one" when she stops by your place at lunch and writes "I love you so much" in big bubble letters in your sketch book of golf holes. Her support is really incredible, especially considering her situation.

History. I used to reenact the Civil War and worked at Gettysburg for two summers.

Railroading, especially the histories of the coal region in PA with the Reading, Lehigh Valley and some of the Pennsy. My father and I are slowly working on modeling the entirety of Schuylkill County based on 1910 timetables.

The Pennsylvania State University. Especially football.

Brad,

I'm a Crichton fan as well, though his later stuff, to me is lacking. Prey especially fell far short of my expectations.

My wife and daughters (obviously).

The St. Louis Cardinals.

My house, and other homes.  I always have home improvements projects I am working on or considering, and I enjoy trying to make my home better and more enjoyable.  In addition, I enjoy studying the history of architecture of houses and taking house tours.  (Some call this adult pornography.)

Movies.

Classical music.  But only listening to and attending concerts.  I am not into studying the literature of classical music.

Politics.  Although I do have my own political leanings, I also enjoying reading about all political leanings and types.

Reading newspapers and listening to radio news (i.e. NPR, BBC, & CSPAN radio).

By the way Dan had I not moved and still been up in Erie as I once was the shrine room above might very likely have been a Bills or Sabres shrine.  I was a Bills season ticket holder from about '90 - '93.  And what a great time to be a Bills fan, I didnt have to put up with the early years, I came in right on the ground floor of the runner-up dynasty.

Started racing when I was 11 years old with a neighborhood friend, kept it going all the way until I was 22, then stopped for about 5 years. Got the bug bad again then lost it agan, only to get it back again and that's where I am now.

Where is now?

Well, I'm typing this from Seattle, as we are racing this weekend.  at Pacific Raceways. We're trying to make it two in a row as we won our last race in Spokane two weeks ago.

Tommy, we've discussed this many times before, but it remains a mystery to me how someone can be so wise about baseball and so sadly misguided about college football.

Ahhh, variety is the spice of life.  But I swear man, no one will ever know you had these misguided allegiances.. come on over to the home town team.. you know, the one that actually competes for and wins national championships rather than talks about such from decades gone by?

As far the number 1 preseason rating, don't mean much if you can't get past the carnival/circus/madhouse called the BCS boys to actually get in the big game...   ;D

Jumping on the bandwagon equates to rooting for a team since birth?  I guess you could have said that 43 years ago, I mean USC was winning national championships then... so guilty as charged.

 ;D

Of course rankings at the end of the season are the coin of the college football realm, and those at the beginning are mere curiousities... and no big fan of the BCS am I... but still, it's something so far out of Notre Dame's universe, it is worth pointing out for Domer Naccarato.

Huckaby, I am betrayed.

Darn - sorry man.  Well I still have a lot of love for Penn State.  And hell, no offense to the Illini boys in here, but they're no threat.

 ;D

Tim:  add that to the lengthy list of reasons to hate ND:  their own TV contract.  But at least Kalen did identify a great reason why they have it - so us haters can root for our adopted team each week, and see them thump the Irish.  It sure as hell can't be based on success of ND!  And nice use of the OJ trump card - that sure took a long time.  ND is just 100% full of saints.   ;)

In any case, you reminded me I need to amend my list.  I have two favorite college football teams:  USC and whoever's playing Notre Dame.

Although I must admit, the latter is getting kind of boring... it surely was more fun when ND was actually decent.

Morrison,

Check history for how many undefeated seasons my upstart Nittany Lions have, and then cross-reference that with our National Championships. Not saying we should have been MNC necessarily, but we should have had a chance - especially after going undefeated in 1968 AND 1969. Furthermore, going back to the 20s, Penn State has a 12-4-2 record or so against UPenn.

Huckaby,

Illinois scares me this year... that has "trap game" written all over it for Penn State.

18-21-4 all time, from 1896 to 1958. I'd imagine the balance of UPenn's wins came in the first two decades of the century since I only bothered to look back to the 20s before I got lazy and by that point, PSU had the advantage.

Coastal Carolina is actually a PGM school. And we scheduled Syracuse when they were going 10-2 and playing in BCS Bowls.

Huckaby,

Illinois scares me this year... that has "trap game" written all over it for Penn State.

I will be there in all my glory as we take down the Lions this year.  Unfortunately, I also thought the same thing in 94' when WE had the #1 Nittney Loins down 17 in the first quarter only to squnder that lead at the end of the 4th.

Huckaby will be cheering us on on Sept. 29th!  Tom...Illini-nation is happy to have you.

Of course, remember what happened to you last two times we played you after the Michigan game.

I remember that 1994 game like it was yesterday. Somehow, the Lion juggernaut forgot they had the best offense/team in 1994 for  the first half. Then stormed back.

Too bad we had already DROPPED from #1 to #2 two weeks prior after beating Ohio State 63-14...  ::)

Right,
I am the MOST Oh-Tee guy around here, but I am now officially majorly pee'd. Right now, there's about five threads around that I'm loving but, simply put, SHOULDN'T BE HERE!

This post is Oh-Tee. Fandabbydozzee, let's pop it onto the Oh-Tee area and we can have a ball.

Bi- or even tri-furcation of this website is VITAL.

FBD.

Martin, while I agree with what you propose, I thought "your OTHER interests" gave the O/T away. I just thought it would be nice to know something about the people I converse with on almost a daily basis besides what they think of the 18th at CPC.

Shivas

is Ed having to learn to breathe out through his mouth whilst at the same time breathe in through his nose to play this instrument?  If so, he might be able to progress to the bagpipes next.

PS  Ed would appreciate that this instrument (if I guessed right) is made out of wood, has no new technology involved, and is dependent solely on Ed's ability to make the appropriate sound.  However, similar (albeit briefer) sounds were heard in the baked beans scene in Blazing Saddles without such an instrument

Interesting to see how many of you are into hockey! Especially the Wings. The original six are still special.

As as kid, I loved the Dodgers and the Orioles, especially when the Vancouver Mounties were the AAA farm team for the latter and sent Chuck Estrada, Ron Hansen, Jim Gentile, Joe Durham, Frank Torre and many more up to the bigs. Lived nearby while growing up and shagged balls with them. I cannot get into it so much now as the money in organized sports has become too all consuming. Golf is the only game where performance seems to matter year to year.

Brad, I have a black Labrador Retriever under my desk right now so I know what you mean.

Obviously kids, wife etc.

Otherwise, as a boring lawyer practicing in the field of construction litigation,I look to GCAtlas and the game generally to give me some space. I really need golf and I really love GCA! Met some fine people and look forward to logging on whenever I can. Otherwise, I really am not into anything a lot. As I said, boring.

- Surfing (Trestles or Salt Creek when waves are acceptable)
- Mining & civil engineering....spending enough time at work to "figure it out"
- SCU basketball....if and when they ever get good again ::)....we will require increased donations from certain GCA folk to make this happen

What's up with that remark at the bottom of your posts about Moe Norman. I realize everthing he said he said twice but other than that why is he your hero?  ;)

Did you realize that in Moe's mind if he didn't hit at least two flags during a round he considered it a bad day? (maybe that's why he's your hero).

And did you realize that more than once during pro-ams if his amateur partners were making too many birdies, even net birdies, Moe would say:

"You don't need me, you don't need me", and he would walk right off the golf course and go hit balls or whatever.

I picked up golf 2 years ago at 46 after quitting hockey due to back pain. (Golf hasn't helped my back any). I found it very easy to learn golf and to hit down on the ball. I recommend all golfers learn how to shoot a slap shot and snap shot to improve their game ;)

While I am sure that there are Irish men and women that hate Notre Dame, I think as a group they have much more love for the Irish than many other groups have (specifically Native Americans) do for the nicknames they are associated with. I'll give you that ND is the most hated university in the country, but its also the most loved. Heck, I see more ND gear in Albuquerque than ANY other school outside the state. Only one that comes close is Texas. USC? Notta.

And oh yeah...my other interests (since I never bothered to list them)...

I enjoy self-righteous moralizing, condescention and judgmentalism, particularly where hypocrisy is also involved.

So there.  ;D

Which makes me wonder:

Do you enjoy that stuff so much because you're so good at it -- or are you so good at it because you enjoy it so much?

(BTW: I'm very happy to see that you've moved on from hypocricy to hypocrisy. Can't wait for the move to condenscension! So there.          )

Your fellow traveler,
Dan

I enjoy witty, sarcastic honesty, tinged with a touch of the absurd.....have a good day :)

Mark - Woolwich Arsenal - touche!  Love it.

We need more football battles in this forum.  It does come up from time to time.  We have Chelsea supporters, ManU, and dare I say a few other Gunners.  I seem to recall someone here professing the odd preference for Spurs... can't recall who the poor fellow is.

Tom: Morgan (the 10 year old) got interested in United as Beckham had played for them, Wayne Rooney will again (after he recovers) and the YES (NY Yankees sports network) network used to have replays of the ManU games before we got Fox Soccer Channel last year.  She knows who Thierry Henry is, most of the players are for The US and England National teams, etc.

Being a United fan is like rooting for the Yankees, and we are Yankee fans.

Her school Principal played for Wigan and he is a long-time Liverpool fan....one of our best friends is from Liverpool and is a great Everton fan (go Tim Howard, a former ManU goalie and NJ guy).....we have a great running debate during the season on how each team is playing.

You're allowed to pick any team you like.....I even have friends who are die hard Red Sox and Mets fans and hate the Yankees.  It makes the season much more interesting to tease and razz your friends when their team does a crash and burn when they play your favorite.

1. Lions
2.Hurricanes
3. I draw the line at Trump.
4. To this day, I can not understand cricket (but I'm an American).

5. I do root for the Cubs as I hope in my lifetime they will again win the pennant....I would be greatly conficted if they played the Yankees in the World Series.....I was hoping in '04 the Cubs and Red Sox would play after the Yankees crashed and burned.

I have my fingers crossed the Cubbies come thru this year...they are playing well.

When you root for the NY Rangers in hockey, you have some qualities....after all, 1 Stanley Cup in 60 years ranks right up there with the Red Sox World Series wins (we don't know this years outcome yet).

Beckahm certainly put a buzz into our area this weekend..66,000 came to see him play in Giants Stadium....if a few more international name brands came and played here in the US, soccer would be on track to compete with the other televised sports here.....our kids generation all playe soccer, so it only makes sense.....games done in 2 hours....defined amount of TV time for a match....sounds like a no-brainer to me.

Behave!!! I've lived in Chelsea all my life and the reason I feel I should quantify my support is precisely because there are so many nouveau "supporters" around - and it's not just Chelsea that suffer from that.

On a golfing level, many of the Chelsea players play regularly, although their choice of course won't surprise many - Wentworth and Wisley being very popular due to the facilities on offer.

In his inimitable way, he stated:

While sadly I don't have as much life experience, I certainly have been attending long enough to go through the bad times and to now appreciate the good times.

My father doesn't play golf - I wish he did - so football is our bond, something which I believe each son needs with his father. I plan on golf and football being that if / when I have children, which is why the cadet scheme at my club is such a great idea.

Does anybody play both golf and tennis passionately?  Some years ago (before I joined a club) I was really into tennis, looking forward to my Saturday matches with as much anticipation as I look forward to golf now.  Without making a conscious decision to do so I drifted away from the game and haven't played at all for over 15 years.  It's a great game but I think it's pretty hard to play both golf and tennis seriously and do justice to either.

Add me to the gardener list. Roses are my favorite but in general I just like working around garden. I have some camellias and enjoy them as well. Great color in shaded areas

I have often thought one of the things I like about golf is being out in the general setting. While certainly not a garden in the classic sense if done well a beautiful natural setting.

Palace need all the prayers they can get. Unfortunately our owner, the ridiculous Simon Jordan, is only a multi-millionaire and cannot compete with the likes of Roman.

Of course, the 'glory' days of Palace (3rd in the League, FA Cup finalists) came under the Chairmanship of Ron Noades. He has decided that football is a mugs game and is now into golf club ownership including my home club and The Addington. He has done very well out of me over the years. :'(

LOL. He can have the lot for £15m.

No disdain on my part. Just pointing out the realities of modern-day football. Of course it's not just Roman these days. You have the Glazers, Shinawatra et al. BUT to say that Roman has helped smalled clubs to survive is stretching it a bit considering most of the signings have been made from abroad. I'm sure AC Milan needed the money you paid for Shevchenko. And what of your English signings? Arsene didn't exactly look to  the lower divisions to replace Ashley Cole.

The greatest service that Roman ever did for English football was to get rid of Ken Bates leaving him free to take Leeds to the edge of oblivion a trick he almost pulled off at Chelsea. :D

Good to see there are some other soccer fans out there.

I'm an OM fan first and foremost with LOSC a close second in the French Ligue.  Of course you guys are rolling your  ::) going who cares about the French league.  But when I'm in...

England ... it's all about Man. U. for me.  Long live Cantona!  I'll watch Arsenal though, but less these days without Henry and Vieira.

Spain ... it's all about Barcelona.  And to think I had to watch Real to see Zidane.  Hate Real.  The Camp Nou is something else.  I have goose bumps just thinking about it.  Talk about an experience.

Italy ... it's all about Juventus.  Juve!  Juve!  Platini and Zidane at their peak.  I hate AC Milan.  Bianconeri!

You get the idea.  I follow my beloved Bleus wherever they go!

... and now back to golf.

Well, since being knocked off my perch some years ago, most of my passions have long been pushed by necessity to the back-burner. This board was one, although, I am forcing myself to practice my chops here in the hopes of reviving what is left of my former writing sideline.

With the exception of hyperventilating 12 Saturdays every Fall, cheering for my beloved Trojans, most of my attention has been directed towards trying to cure autism; this is certainly not an endeavor to be taken as a hobby, but out of necessity is the focus of nearly every aspect of life.

Consulting on course design is another passion, but one that has been percolating in the background since before the bomb was detonated. I can still close my eyes and “see” how I want it to look, but will have to admit that, like my guitar playing, it always ends up sounding like Jerry Garcia doing an imitation of Neal Young or looking like John Harbottle trying to do Seth Raynor without common sense or budgetary considerations.

Thank God for Neal . . . . . .

If I tracked my time with a journal, I am guessing that my passion for cooking takes up the most time. The Redhead is working absurd hours, and our three kids have to eat. So, what might be viewed as a chore is actually a form of therapeutic escape from the litigious lunacy that fills what discretionary time is left.

A year from now, I hope my response will be a whole lot different . . . . . .

Jon - well said re Chelsea fans.  And I must say I have nothing but love and respect for Palace.

TH

Tom

I can tell you are a true connoisseur of the beautiful game.

Behave!!! I've lived in Chelsea all my life and the reason I feel I should quantify my support is precisely because there are so many nouveau "supporters" around - and it's not just Chelsea that suffer from that.

Tim,

I am delighted to find a long term supporter of Chelsea. I saw my first game at Stamford Bridge in the autumn of 1938 in a loss to Arsenal. Ted Drake scored the goal that beat us but many years later he managed the Blues.

All I know is that the club caused me many more heartaches than joys over the last sixty odd years. The time in the title wilderness was overwhelming. I returned to Rhodesia not long after the war and sort of lost track, there was no TV and the newspaper reorts were skimpy. Thanks to Channel 149 on Dish, it has .have revived my interest in the game.

I said to Huckaby just a couple of days ago that Chelsea will finish out of the top four and Drogba, Lampard, Carvallo(sic) and possibly Essien will be off to pastures new.

Living in the UK for 16 of the last 20 years, I am resigned to being interested in soccer, given that the only other alternatives are lawn bowling, curling, darts, badminton, European Tour "golf", Grab the Balls of your Team Mates and Opponents (rugby), and field hockey.  In soccer/football I choose to support Cowdenbeath, figuring that their nickname, the "Blue Brazil" indicates that they are both Protestant and Catholic, even though this is probably not true, but I love the town anyway.....  I also support another losing cause, Scotland, although as Patrick Kiser will know, we kicked some butt in France a week or two ago.  Just so I can have some regular does of success I also support Man United, and revel when they (usually) put clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in their rightful places, below the salt.

As for the US, I can't help continue to support the team of my youth, the Yankees, and most Octobers I thank the lord of the championship rings that my parents moved the family from Boston to the suburbs of NYC when I was age 3.  I also check in every week to see how my alma mater, Stanford is doing.  This weekend, when they were leading Oregon 31-24 at halftime and lost 31-55 was not atypical of most of the 40-45 years of my support.

Outside of sports I am an information and crossword puzzle junkie.  I competed in the latter when my synapses were sharp and my small muscle control adequate (at the highest levels, how fast you can write is critical, as you and all your opponents can think at about the same speed).  Nowadays I just do 2-3 a day to try to delay the onset of Alzheimer's.  Similarly, where I was once a world-class wine drinker, I now focus on quality rather than quantity, in deference to my liver.  I sing, too, chorally and as a solo, although the latter is only when I break the quality/quantity rule mentioned immediately above.

I'm sure there is more.....

I'm sure they will. Roman Abramovich might well be the Donald Trump of football (minus the self promotion!). Doesn't really know that much yet wants to get involved all the time.

In what other business would you get rid of the best manager in the world and replace him with a no-mark puppet?

It's akin to Donald wanting to design a course and getting an architect in who will do exactly what he wants, even if it's putting a waterfall (Shevchenko) on a links course...

As you might have gathered, I'm not very happy with the senior management at Chelsea right now!

I enjoy watching college football, golf, poker, and other sporting events in HD on a home theater.  I enjoy beer and brats...but also go for an upscale dinner and glass of wine.  I enjoy classic rock to country to classical music...all can get the blood pumping!

I also enjoy listening to political commentary and becoming an "armchair quarterback" while watching CNN or Fox News.  Stephen Colbert is my hero.  Wrist strong, baby.

But most important of all is my family...spending time with loved ones and sharing smiles makes life worth living!

My one truly passionate interest is playing golf, the course architecture stuff plays second fiddle to actually being out there hitting the ball. I also obviously spend way too much lifespan online discussing golf-related stuff with other monomaniacs.

Outside of that, my other interests are much farther down my hierarchy of needs. I dabble with learning to play viola and, occasionally, guitar. I listen to an awful lot of music of various kinds and spend too much time watching stuff in our home theater.

I also like to spend time walking around our neighborhood and yard keeping an eye on all the people, pets, other critters and whatever plants are in season. I used to spend a lot of time looking at the sky, with or without telescopes, but they've put so many lights up near our house I can't see anything but yellow glare.

Not much of a sports fan. I watch the majors and a couple other golf tournaments plus the occasional Euro Tour event on The Golf Channel on rainy winter mornings. I see one or two NFL football games on TV most weeks and maybe the odd baseball game. Other sports aren't really on my radar.

Since i was forced to retire from golf in June 2008, I've taken up 2 other genuine interests. I began painting then and have kept up that hobby consistently. Feeling that I needed still another challenge, I joined my son in his residental real estate business.

I thought when I sold my business in 1998 and retired that I would never work again, but thank goodness I've had this opportunity to be productive again and share it with my son.

If someone will direct me how to post my painting, I'll do so forthwith.

For craft beer lovers and/or Cleveland residents, if you're in Cleveland, head to Fat Head's Brewery and try a few different types and report back. The owner of the original Fat Head's in Pittsburgh (not a brewpub) is a partner in the Cleveland brewery and a good friend, terrific guy, and I'm hoping his new efforts at his own beer ends up being the next big craft beer.

Anyone else in the group like me and find it harder and harder to be interested in professional golf.  I honestly would watch a hour long video on Crytsal Downs than watch Tiger Woods play golf in the Middle East.

Other than golf courses, I don't have much time left for anything else with my law practice and wife and 5 young kids.  Love spending time with the kids in any activity.  Also follow the Browns - get on the train now as good times are coming!

Professional golf is incredibly boring to watch. I have no idea how so many guys on this website can tolerate it. My golf viewing has declined to the point where I watch the last nine holes of each major. Occasionally I watch an event just to see the course (I watched Golf Channel's APL coverage from Bandon last year).

Anyway, some of interests...none of which I really have time for:

Tennis
I'm a mediocre guitar and banjo player
I like to read, trying to get caught up on 20th century American literature at the moment
I love working with dogs - both my own, and I also volunteer at my local animal shelter. I really enjoy working with pit bulls.
Spending time with my wife and young daughter.
Trying to find time to explore the Bay Area, where I have lived for the past three years.

In Chicago, the golf season gets a bit pinched.  To alleviate the inherent boredom of cabin fever, I started playing Paddle Tennis (or Platform Tennis) a few years ago.  Played solely in the cold season, its a combination of tennis and squash.  A doubles format, the main differences are you can play shots off of the screens and you only get one serve.  The video below from the 2010 National Championships will give you a bit of an idea.  If anything, its a great way to get some outside activity during the hibernation months.  On match nights, the home teams are responsible for providing the beer.

Flying.  Yesterday I was line #1 (first takeoff) of the day under a red sky.  Nothing smells like jet fuel at 0630.  Nothing replicates 6 G's.

Hiking.  Can't wait to spend 5 days in Grand Teton NP this summer.  I got a permit for five nights in the backcountry.  Fifth year I've tried.

Mountain Biking.  Current obsession.  I'm not very good, but I give it a go and pay the price.  It's a hell of a workout too!

College Football.  Interest waning after a couple years of scandal.  But I bleed Red and Black.

EPL.  One Nil to the Arsenal!  Newest obsession.  Watched a match last Sunday and was hooked.  NBA, MLB, and NASCAR are all done for me.

Skiing.  If I'm near a ski area, good luck keeping me off it.  I miss it so much.  Another reason why I'm "over" Texas.

I very much like this thread.  It's hard to "know" people off our our common interest of golf and golf courses.  I wish I knew more about most of you guys outside of golf.

Much thanks goes to M B Bradley for posting these for me :)

I injured my back when I was 40 years old and thru anti inflamatories, ice, massage and cortisone, I made it to my 65th birthday before they sliced and diced me. Knowing I couldn't play for 6 months, I found a painting instructor and learnt to paint under his supervision.

The same hand eye coordination found in the short game applies in painting, and a number of my golf friends paint with me.

Most of these take about 50-70 hours except "marbles" which took 300 hours. The medium is oil, the category is hyper photo realistic.

Most of my normal size painting table

Weekends now are consumed with being a squash Dad for my 16 year old. Here he is in white playing in the Tournament of Champions Junior Division at Grand Central Station in NYC:

In the last month, he has played kids from Japan, Pakistan, Egypt, Canada, England and Brooklyn (!) in New York, Boston, Scotland and England. I kid him that he is LeBron Sweeney on these road trips. I can't play squash with him anymore but I am in very good shape for an "old guy" trying to keep up with him.

In two and a half years, he will be off to college so golf trips can wait for now as it is really fun for Dad too. Die hard skier too in a past life and that may come back on intermediate style runs down the road.

Also amazed and impressed at Cary's art work.

Here are some of the kids refurbishing a school that had been hit my rockets...

In all seriousness, this kind of stuff blows my mind.  A school needs refurbishing because it was HIT BY ROCKETS!!!!  That concept is beyond my comprehension.

I'll add another one that left me dumbfounded...

Talking to my buddy, whom I met in the Corps who has been active in the "sanbox" as he puts it since day one of the Afghan/Iraq conflict, said that a friend of his complained about how dangerous being in City X was.  And his response to me was, "That is b..s....  It ain't dangerous there.  All they get is an occassional rocket that will hit a building or something like that."

Huh?  Having an "occasional" rocket randomly hit a building that you may or may not be in, isn't dangerous?!?!?!?  Makes me flat out afraid for him and what he is doing day in and day out, if that isn't dangerous.

I get upset if it is raining too much and I can't play golf on a given day.  How soft have I become?  (Don't answer that!)

Another tid-bit, along those lines...and yeah, I've had too much coffee this morning and I'm rolling...sorry...

I went to the Gulf Coast area after Katrina hit to help rebuild a few homes...I figured it was the least I could do, given how close I lived to the devastated area.  I was, again, dumbfounded and blow away.  Houses, neighborhoods, schools...GONE!!!  Completely blown over and 100% destroyed by wind.  Freakin' wind!!

I snapped a few pictures of homes that were totally blow over and just piles of rubble.  Now these were NICE homes, well build, brick, sturdy, nice...right on the beach.  But they were reduced to piles of rubble in the blink of an eye!

I have these pictures hanging on the wall in my office.  I look over at them for grounding purposes when I "think" I am having a bad day.

Freakin' wind!!

well said...it's amazing how many people worry/freak out over unbelievably trivial stuff when others have real problems like rocket attacks to worry about

fly-fishing from a drifting boat on a remote scottish loch deep in the highlands, mist rolling in off the high tops, only me and my rod and line whishing in the damp morning air. a sudden ripple on the right. cast into the waves. a moment. then. SEIZE. a tug. and a mighty battle ensues. trout leaping, pulling, line running, screaming reel testifies. fifteen heart-stopping minutes later, the quarry lies there. beautiful bar of silvery-brown, thank you salmo trutta, it was an honour to meet and to tempt and deceive you. i promise to honour your memory. my family will know of your life. your energy becomes theirs. scotland forever.

Other than family and friends, supporting the Red Wings is one of my favourite things to do.

I also like reading history, but this obsession has waned in recent years after selling off most of my books.

Following bull fighting has waned as well, but I still hope to attend the odd event here and there.

I really enjoy seeking out good, affordable wines, but I don't do many buying trips to France anymore.

Jeepers, maybe its time to get passionate about something!

Small school Texas High School football. I just love the drama and commitment the small town folks make to their youth. My kids go to a high school with an enrollment of 400. On friday nights between the varsity kids kids on the field, the freshman and JV teams that line the sidelines, the band, cheerleaders, mascots, drill teams, flag team...etc...we have almost 300 kids involved and about 3,000 in the stands. And most of the other teams do the same. Pretty cool atmosphere and pure sports as almost none of those kids will play ball after high school. Want to see raw emotion, go down on the field after the seniors play their last game.

My vegetable garden. I'll be working on it this afternoon.

My chickens...nothing like an omelet with farm fresh eggs and fresh onion and tomato right out of the ground.

Fishing - grew up a bass fisherman, but I think I like redfishing better. And fresh red fish on the grill is out of this world good.

Great work for sure!  Congratulations
I like your experimentation with a different style
It seems you should explore more

Working from a home office is great for spending time with the family (while still working a ton of hours), going to almost all daughter functions and walking them home from school occasionally.  2 years ago in a very slow and depressing market with most of my time at my desk eating Shipley donuts, I joined an MMA (mixed martial arts) gym - I wrestled for many years in my past.

I now train Brazillian Jiu Jitsu 6-7 days a week, 1-2 hours a day - sometimes with world champions and minor league UFC fighters.
It is a fascinating, highly complex martial artform.
I was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I have.
I am much fitter and have gotten very good.
It is fun choking out bigger, stronger grown men on a daily basis.

Mahaffey doesn't kick sand on me anymore either.

Cheers

Dave - glad to see other Dead fans on the board. I was a taper and saw Jerry 150 times between 1981 and 1992. I've slowly been archiving all of my old analog masters onto a hard drive for easier access. I had a set of Nakamichi CM-100 with the cp-4 shotguns running into either a Sony D5-M or JVC PCM-D5. A lot of great nights for sure. Used to tour with a guy running an old Sony PCM-F1 digital processor onto a potable betamax machine. That set-up lined into some Schoepp's mics could sing at the right venue.

These days I am still pretty involved with listening to and collecting music with my tastes running the gamut - I truly believe that every genre has both great stuff and a lot of mediocrity. The trick is finding the stuff worth listening to.

Outside of work, golf and my two kids (4 and 8 years old) and being a news junkie and seeing some good shows here and there does not leave much time for too much else. (Saw acoustic Hot Tuna last week and have Psychic TV at the end of the month in Philly!)

Live Music - I go to roughly 40-50 concerts per year, mostly at venues holding fewer than 500 people, occasionally with GCAers;
College Basketball and Football - though this was an especially bad year to be a UCLA and Illinois fan;
NHL Hockey - my Kings, as they have been for the last forty years or so, are pitiful, but I still watch every game;
Major League Baseball - Looking forward to Albert Pujols' 10 best years in Anaheim;
And craft beer.  I tend to stockpile highly regarded, very ageable beer the way many people do with wine, and probably have about $1,000 worth of good beer (based on its ebay value) in my closet.

This may be one of my favorite threads.

I love fly fishing, Michigan State football and basketball, U.S. History, Detroit Tigers/Lions/ Red Wings, Traveling with fellow supers, All apple products, Old friends, Girls, but I'm mostly obsessed with Ben Hogan and every aspect of golfing history. I literally grew up on a golf course, when other kids were going to day care, I was on the back of tractor pulling gang mowers. I use to cut cups and do course setup before I went to school in the morning. So for years all I knew was golf until football or basketball season started.

The only thing that rivals my golfing knowledge is Michigan State athletics. I never miss a game and I can probably name you every recruit in the last 15 years. I was obsessed with all things sports in high school but now that I'm getting older I'm starting to enjoy more "mature" things. A nice capital grill or ruth's chris filet mignon before going to the movies with my girlfriend.

I still make her watch golf ;)

Jud - some of the greats that I was lucky to be at:

11/1/85 Richmond - they made a Dick's Picks out of it - my first show taping with my own equipment
12/15/86 Oakland - return show after Jerry's coma
6/29/86 Alpine - really liked the Shakedown-Estimated-Eyes - really the whole 6/28-6/30 Alpine-Alpine-Cincy run was strong
Jerry on Broadway - saw one show at the Lunt-Fontanne theater off of Times Square during the run
New Year's '87 - not the greatest run but catching a New Year's run was special
4/30 and 5/1/88 Frost - Afternoon shows in the California sun - few things could come close
3/24/86 Philly Spectrum - 2nd set was short but one of the greats
4 shows on the Jerry tour in '89 with MSG-Albany-Hartford in three successive nights - always wished there were more east coast JGB

So long ago but still meaningful to me. Still love live music in bars and clubs - The Dirtbombs are as good as it gets these days. I doubt anything will get as good as Jerry on the "right" night could however. These days it's work, family, golf and the New York Rangers.

Jim, Jud and Dave,

I have most of the vault on a Hard drive.  Pm me if you want to figure out a way to get a copy.  Some of the shows are audience, but most are SBD.

Recently, I have been transferring an entire tour (i.e. Spring of '69) onto a dedicated iPod.  I leave it in my car and then I systematically listen to the entire tour.  I'll then get intrigued by another tour and listen to that one as well.

We all have our favorites, but 5.2.70 takes the cake for me.  Great acoustic set, then everything under the sun in that blistering electric set.  Once a time machine is invented, I am heading to that show, running into Bear and then dancing my rear-end off.  As Jerry said early in the show, "Relax, we've got you all night long".   ;D

Hello Carson and other Dead Heads,

I enjoy the Grateful Dead's live music from around 1968 to 1972 best.  However, I am not as well versed on live Dead as a devoted fan of their music.  But the early stuff is a more driving style of music.  It rocks harder.  They became pretty sedate as the years went by.

I like collecting great songs on my iPod, that's a big passion these days.

I agree about the decline of the Dead. They got tired and stopped executing at the right level. Their music was monochromatically mundane with aimless meandering jamming and lame lyrics. The live shows from the mid 70s and forward are almost unlistenable and one suspects the band was half whacked.

Must admit that I'm kind of surprised getting into a Dead discussion on this board but...

There were high and low points all through their history. '69 is clearly a big high point, as is a lot of '73. I really thought a good bit of the '76-79 era is somewhat overrated and can get very bogged down feeling (I have a soft spot for 11/6/79 Philly with the slowest Black Peter ever). IMO the good bits of '85 and early '86 were underrated. '89 and Spring '90 got real good as well. My feeling when touring in the mid to late '80's was to hope to see at least one of the two or three meltdowns on a given tour. There were certain to be some clunkers as well in that era (4/6/85 Philly and Harrisburg '84). I'm not sure that Jerry's playing was ever as inventive and jazzy after the '86 coma as prior to it. I really liked the quick jazzy riffs of the '85 time period (examples Shakedown 3/27/85 - Eyes first solo Alpine 6/29/86). After the coma I thought the shows got more even for a while but the highs were not quite maintained through a full show as they could be prior (example 10/12/84 Augusta, Me). Once they went to the Midi-heavy work and the quiet stage in '92 or so I lost the fever to see them. I was at 5 of the 6 '90 Garden shows and considered them a very strong run, probably the last really strong run I saw live.

I understand all that you have said.  For me however, I have to broadstroke it with...I prefer all work from '77 and before.  Much prefer '72 and before.  I like the punchiness of '75 Boston and the GAMH show of course.  '74 seemed a little spacey, but the China>Rider transitions of that year were fantastic.

All that said, you give me ANY show from 1970 and before....I'll take it.
