I was sitting around with a couple of friends this weekend and the subject came up about golf. They knew I was fairly well traveled and asked what I hadn't done or seen in golf. I said my dream would be the following:
1. Open Champion
2. Payne Stewart Award
3. Captain of the Royal and Ancient
Now I am not goint to accomplish any of these but in a dream World that is the three I hold the highest.
-
The Bob Jones Award given by the USGA is their highest honor. With all due repect I would place it in the list above the Payne Stewart Award. Expand the list to four!
-
Do you classify it & say Open Champion at St Andrew’s, or is Open Champion good enough.
-
Captain of the R&A is a great honour, but I don't think its really a golf honour - most of the recent Captains have been prominent in other fields.
-
Freedom of the Burgh, St. Andrews.
-
Being recognized as THE ONE to beat. The list of those honored is incredibly short:
Jones, Nicklaus and Woods.
Hagen, Nelson, Hogan, Palmer, Trevino and Watson fall just short.
All others dream and wish.

I'd think that for golf course architects, having a major golf tournament held on a course they had designed would be pretty cool. I'd imagine that for Pete Dye, seeing one of golf's most exciting days in history unfold on one of his most cherished courses (1991 Ryder Cup) must have been awesome.

And I thought this thread was going to be a list of those who have "chrushed" Ran. ;D
-
It has to be the dream of anyone who has ever picked up a club to be Open Champion. I am almosts 60 and when i play alone I still "play" for the champioship.
-
Tony - I like that one VERY much but the list is way too long for the honor to mean much. ;D
Therefore, being golf's most beloved figure must be golf's highest honor. It entails only one individual (even he he has been crushed by 1/2 of the golfing community).

As a golfer - I'd suggest Grand Slam Champion would be a nice title to have
