Title: Central California Coast (South)?
Post by: Steve Sailer on February 18, 2003, 06:49:25 PM
Now that Southern California is green, I'd like to take a couple of days playing golf in the beautiful country north of Santa Barbara. La Purisima sounds like a solid public course, but what should be my other choice: Rancho San Marcos? Cypress Ridge in Nipomo? Hunter Oaks in Paso Robles? Is there anything good, or should I go back and play Sandpiper again?

Before Hunter Ranch or Sandpiper I would try and get on the
Ranch Course at the Alisal. NOT the River COurse, the Ranch Course. Many  members of prestigious clubs in LA have a membership there. It the class of the Santra Ynez Valley.

I would definitely play La Purisima, which I think is a better course than Sandpiper. After that, you cannot go wrong with either Hunter Ranch or Rancho San Marco.
By the way, be sure to go to the Hitching Post #2 restaurant in Buellton for a great steak dinner!!!

Rancho San Marcos is a lot of fun but don't even THINK about walking!  Two huge uphill hikes make this impossible.  Santa Barbara Muni (now I think called SB GC) is fun to play and cheap, Glen Annie is awful.  I agree with the LaPurisma vs Sandpiper comment.  Drive down to Ojai and play Soule Municipal, another good daily fee.  But the best news is that Rustic Canyon is just 60 minutes south of Santa Barbara!

My favorites north of Rustic would be:
1. Ojai Valley Inn, they have a $69 afternoon special
2. Sandpiper
3. Vandenberg Air Force Base, near Lompoc
4. La Purisma
5. Soule Park in Ojai
6. Santa Barbara muny

Haven't played Hunter Ranch

Drive an extra hour and play Rustic.
