I did suggest that Garland, and people have taken to it, but I don't know if it's actually a rule.  ::)

Let's just say it is penance Kalen has to pay for losing an important match.

Looking at the picture, it feels like those pools should be filled with Playmates and Hef... :)

I decided fairly early on that I wanted to pick only holes that I had seen in person, and preferably that I had played, in part to limit the universe of holes I had to think about.  Given that significant limitation, I'm pretty happy with my course!

I will take the clubhouse at Stonewall, since it is an integral part of my 18th hole.

Here are the final results.  I probably missed a switch or two so double check your info on the first page and confirm that everything is correct.

Thanks everybody for participating.  I hope it was fun and educational.  I know I did a lot of research on holes and course that I otherwise wouldn't have done if it weren't for this draft.  And agonizing over how to make the pieces fit provided a small glimpse of the tough decisions that the pros have to make in the real world.  There were around 195 different courses picked in the draft.

Because I was usually always posting picks, I never got to post pictures of my holes.  I was going to do that, along with a composite routing that I put together of my dream course.  However, after completing 90% of said routing, my computer crashed and I lost most of that work.  Oh well.  I do, however, leave you with this picture of my 7th hole:

Mac or I had best get an award for "Guy who cared least how his scorecard would look, most about how his course would play" or something to that effect...thought I was the only one with five stroke minimal separation between nines until I saw my GCA buddy from Atlanta.  It's a select group, buddy.  Welcome in!!

A nod out west to Kalen Braley, "High par man."  A guy after my own heart, as I love par fives.

Jim,

Thanks for putting in the elbow grease, it was fun...Now we have to go back to the drawing board to come up with an interesting new challenge for #III!

I've been going through the lists this morning trying to highlight some of the most inspired choices and most underrated holes, which I will post below.

Thanks to the commissioner for doing this.  The group was just the right size to get us beyond the usual choices and show some inspiration.

Now that I'm home and have some of my source material, I'm also going to work this weekend on a second list of 18 great holes that were snubbed by the 27 owners.  There are certainly some terrific holes that were missed.

The most inspired choices, by owner:

JC Jones:  5th at Muirfield, a great three-shotter with a unique two-tiered sideways green, which was the inspiration for the 18th green at Sebonack.  Honorable mention:  1st at Belvedere, 4th at Cruden Bay

Matt Bosela:  8th at Royal County Down.  If you want a really tough par 4, look no further.  HM:  17th at Royal Dornoch

Wyatt Halliday:  9th at Riviera.  One of the great greens of the world, sitting on an angle to the fairway with its tier running through the green on the 90-degree opposite angle, and a pretty nice background, too.  HM:  1st at Garden City, which I would have chosen as underrated anywhere but on GCA.

Ronald Montesano:  5th at Machrihanish.  The first hole is so good that most people never get around to talking about this sharp doglegged hole over a heaving fairway.  HM:  9th at Pebble Beach, unfairly overshadowed by others on that course.

Brad Fleischer:  15th at Diamante.  Only one hole was picked from this course that few have seen to date, but Brad picked the best of them, I think.  HM:  11th at Royal Adelaide.

Cristian Willaert:  12th at Royal Ashdown Forest.  A terrific, natural, three-shot par 5 without a bunker, like the rest of the course.

Eric Smith:  1st at Old Macdonald.   Not well known yet, but probably the best opening hole we've ever built.  I only realized after we were done that it is the same prototype as the 1st at Yeamans Hall, also selected here -- but I think our hole is better.

Kalen Braley:  2nd at North Berwick (West).  Not just a diagonal par-4 over the beach, there are lots of funky contours if you bail out to the safe side, and a cool wrinkled green.  Plus, I made a kick-in birdie there in the company four-on-four match this summer.  HM:  7th at Pacific Dunes, the most underrated hole on that course.

Patrick Hodgdon:  9th at Lahinch.  One of the two remaining MacKenzie greens at Lahinch -- and Martin Hawtree has attempted to bypass the other!  The line of the green means the best line off the tee might be into the left rough.  HM:  3rd at The Country Club.

Tim Bert:  4th at Bandon Trails.  HM:  16th at Sand Hills.  I think he's nicknamed after the wrong architect.

Jordan Wall:  16th at National Golf Links.  A lot of people dismiss this hole because of its beautiful setting.  Both the drive and the second shot are just spectacular.

Deucie Bies:  2nd at San Francisco.  A beautiful hole down into a canyon and then back up out of it, sets up for a draw on the tee and a running fade on the approach, and you can't let yourself get above the hole.  HM:  9th at Sandwich, 13th at Rye.

Jud Tigerman:  4th at Rye.  Simply one of the great par-4 holes in golf, with a tee shot out along a tightrope.  Jud, you really should see it someday.  ;)  HM:  13th at The Addington.

Sean Arble:  10th at Cavendish, which Sean aptly depicted a month ago.  HM:  4th at St. Enodoc, 13th at Prestwick.

Robert Ball:  18th at Wilshire, though I have not seen the newly restored version.

Chip Gaskins:  6th at The Creek.  Not underrated on this web site, but neither were any of Chip's other picks.

John Mayhugh:  10th at Prairie Dunes, a great short hole with a wild green.  Jeff Brauer would come up with some new theory of how par-3 holes should not reject golf shots and discriminate against golfers, if I had built this one.  HM:  12th at Swinley Forest.

Mac Plumart:  7th at Inverness, with one of the best creeks in golf.  Mac picked SIX holes I have never seen, way more than anyone else, so I don't know if those are underrated or whether he's just crazy.

Richard Choi:  11th at Plainfield.  Followed by the other two holes he picked from Plainfield.  And he didn't even pick one of the best holes at Plainfield; Plainfield is underrated.

George Freeman:  15th at Crystal Downs, which I always tell people is the most underrated hole there; it's a short par 4, but the fairway has just enough roll that it's difficult to leave yourself the stance you want for a demanding little pitch shot.  HM:  11th at The Country Club, 13th at Franklin Hills.

Jim Thornton:  13th at Muirfield, does not get nearly enough respect for the most severe bunkering in golf.  Amazingly, he also picked the 9th at Myopia, a shorter version of the same thing.

Alex Miller:  3rd at Royal County Down.  There is exactly one spot in the left-center of the fairway where you can get a good look down through the dunes to the green, but the combination of the volcano bunker left and the contours of the fairway ensure that few people ever get to that spot.

Jim Colton:  11th at Essex County, a great simple par-3 hole.  HM:  10th at Old Macdonald.

Carl Nichols:  16th at Desert Forest.  There aren't many desert holes which distinguish themselves, because they mostly look alike.  This is the exception.

JNC_Lyon:  16th at Pine Valley.  I suspect this green was built pretty much on the natural contour of the ground, and it's one of the coolest I've ever played.

I have refrained from singling out the most overrated golf holes on the list ... I won't chime in on that unless everybody else sticks their neck out, too.  But I will say there are a couple of guys who participated, whose comments I will take a bit less seriously in the future.  ;)

Thank Ran for my choice of 5 hole at Macrihanish.  I haven't set foot on the hallowed grounds.  I was after the first hole (sniped by Mr. Michigan) and came across Ran's revelation of 5 as his favorite...'nuff said/written.

Tom - thanks for setting the record straight. To be fair both Trails 4 and Sand Hills 16 came very late in the draft. I had to settle for those gems because all the Doak BBoys here so over-reacted to your courses!!   :)

As one that has never had the pleasure of playing The Old Course I was surprised by Jim's summary that a stretch as long as 3-10 could go undrafted.  Can a course of that high praise really have a stretch of 8 consecutive holes unworthy of the draft?

From where I am sitting - some of the best choices

Matt B #5 Portrush: Great kick shot to the back shelf
R Montesano #17 TOC
P Hodgdon #17 Co Sligo
J Mayhugh Foxy: Maybe the best hole in golf
J Tigerman #9 Westward Ho!
E Smith #4 Sandwich: All the attention is on the bunkers, but the green is what really makes this hole
K Braley #2 North Berwick: Love the humps out on the left for those who play it too safe - very difficult to make par from there.

Ciao
New plays planned for 2024: Fraserburgh, Ashridge, Kennemer, de Pan, Eindhoven, Hilversumche, Royal Ostend, Alnmouth & Cruden Bay St Olaf

I would absolutely have taken the 4th hole at The Old Course, but there are so many good choices for a fourth hole that I can see where it would go undrafted.  I was going to take it for my list of best unclaimed holes, but now I'll have to go elsewhere.

The most inspired choices, by owner:

What was yours?  I need to know how seriously to take your comments in the future.   ;D

Carl:  That would be for others to decide.

I did count up that of the 469 (26 full courses plus Matthew's one hole), I had seen all but 35 of them in person.  I wonder if Ran could beat that.

Tom,

We're all ready for you top 18 bone-head picks list that you alluded to earlier...  ;)

I know I've got at least one in there with Thanksgiving Point #17, but I wanted to intentionally do something local to add a bit of spice. So with that, why don't you let us have it!!   ;D

P.S.  Provided you do this, I will also offer up my own version of a "doh!!!" list where I felt someone took a hole wayyy too early on at the expense of passing up on something way better.

Kalen:

I have never seen Thanksgiving Point, so I wouldn't have included it in my list of bad picks.  I'll look and see if I can come up with a worst-of-the-best list.

1. Seattle GC - Par 4, 424 yards  -  played this hole, and love it.  Solid par-4 and a great way to begin a round.
2. Pine Valley - Par 4, 368 yards  -  the green looks amazing, from everything I've heard of the hole I'm glad I got it!
3. Riviera - Par 4, 430 yards  -  played this hole, very good hole and a really fun green.
4. Cypress Point - Par 4, 383 yards  -  pesonal favorite at Cypress.  Love this hole, great green!
5. Cypress Point - Par 5, 493 yards  -  best bunkering I've ever seen on a par-5, and perhaps on any golf hole period.
6.Chambers bay - Par 4, 420 yards  -  very good golf hole, cool great and awesome tee shot.
7. Chicago GC - Pa 3, 207 yards  -  a redan, great looking hole.
8. Fishers Island - Par 4, 480 yards  -  really great half par hole.
9. Garden City - Par 4, 325 yards  -  looks awesome, crazy little hole
10. Riviera - Par 4, 310 yards  -  do I need to say anything?
11. Augusta National - Par 4, 490 yards  -  I wanted this hole not only because Amen Corner is very historic, but a great half par hole from all the way back.
12. Shoreaces - Par 3, 130 yards  -  cool looking shot hole, down in the ravine.
13. San Francisco GC - Par 3, 135 yards  -  seen, never played, and I just love it.  The only question I had in routing this course was two 3's in a row but they are different enough to where I didn't mind.
14. Seattle GC - Par 5, 535 yards  -  I could say lots about this hole, but I love it and it has a lot of options.  Really great hole.
15. Augusta National - Par 5, 530  -  again, do I need to say anything?
16. National Golf Links - Par 4, 410 yards  -  the ultimate punchbowl hole?  Mr. Doak recently stated it was one of his two favorite holes at National.
17. Oakmont - Par 4, 313 yards  -  great penultimate hole where I made a hole in one on Tiger Woods 2010 and sparked an epic comeback.  Oh, its a great hole in real life, too!
18. Pebble Beach - Par 5, 543 yards  -  best finishing hole in golf.

Ending with the clubhouse at Seattle GC.

Par 73, 6926 yards

Very happy with this course.  I got my personal favorite at Cypress, several holes I feel could have gone in the first round, and a relenting test with great golf holes.  Modeled after Cypress Point, the course features back to back short par-4's, par-3's, and par-5's

I also really like the way my course finishes.

I've played eight of these holes, and seen nine.  I think that's petty cool as well.

Seattle GC has one of th best clubhouses and locker rooms I have ever seen.  Mike Keiser signed the papers for the poperty at bandon in the locker room.  I wish I could show pictures, but that would be against the rules.  But for those who have been there, it's amazing and even Leary would back me up here!

Your choice of clubhouse and locker room at Seattle is excellent compared to your choices of holes there for your dream 18.

Mac picked SIX holes I have never seen, way more than anyone else, so I don't know if those are underrated or whether he's just crazy.

:D

Tom,

I have to imagine there are at least three of my picks you haven't seen yet (#3 Sagebrush, #4 Banff, #14 Jasper Park) - I think that just proves we need to find you a nice piece of land here in Canada so you visit more!
