YANK'S NIFTY 50 2019 New
« on: December 04, 2019, 05:09:54 AM »
I tend to care much more about what I like rather than what I think is best,  While it is wonderful to play the greats of the game, my tastes run more toward cheap, cheerful, distinctive terrain, good walk, f&f, quirky, lovely setting etc.  Yet none of that matters much if the quality of design isn't present and so this must be the #1 priority.  However, quality doesn't necessarily mean among the best in the world, country or state.  There is plenty of praise worthy quality which doesn't make top 100 lists.  That said, there will inevitably be some cross over best and favourites.  The courses in bold are those I currently consider among the top 50 best of GB&I.  I also took the liberty of including 11 non GB&I courses (in red) which would make my overall Nifty 50..I leave it to you to guess which GB&I courses make way for these 11 interlopers.

Sean, I could never work out what "best"  meant so, ever since I started playing lots of courses, I always listed my "favourites". That list (with criteria + extras) is:

Greg,

Paste it into Notepad first, then cut from there and paste into GCA. It will strip the formatting and make it appear without all the coding.

My nifty list is pretty similar to Sean's although there are some courses on his listing I've not yet played (and perhaps some mentioned below that he may not have done yet).

Courses I would add -

Dooks
Mulranny
Carne (all 27-holes)
Dunfanaghy
Annesley at RCD
Portmarnock (27)
Brora
St Olaf at Cruden Bay
Carnoustie
Muirfield
Yelverton
Frilford Heath (Green)
Tadmarton Heath

There are many famous, bigger name, lengthier, more difficult courses that I've played and played well at over the years that I respect and could have included, but I haven't. Indeed there are some big name, famous courses that I'm happy to never to play again unless someone else is paying.
There comes a point when fun and enjoyment and smiles and walking off the 18th green wanting to play again rather than walking off the 18th green beat-up and weary and knackered takes precedence. This doesn't mean a desire to abstain from challenge or difficulty though, these are still important, essential even, but challenge and difficulty don't necessarily come only with a famous name and length, although sometimes they and fun and enjoyment and smiles do when an appropriate tee is used.
Each to their own though.

Tommy

I have been won over to some degree.  Oddly, I think if done well, the post erosion work could make the course better.  Much will hinge on the 7th...a hole which impresses me.

Greg

Very impressive list!

When I played Westward Ho! recently we were still playing to the normal green but he 'new' greensite for the 7th was being worked on and looked impressive.

Sub out Carnoustie for Fraserburgh and Muirfield for Northwest GC and I like your mini list
(although Portsalon has to slide in there somewhere-in for Portmaronack!)

I just saw Northwest was 80th in Ireland!

I keep going back to Taddy and I am afraid the course simply doesn't click with me.  I do have a few on your list targeted, but time will tell if I ever get to them.  However, none listed that I have played are near Nifty 50.  West Cornwall, Purbeck & Huntercombe are three which just missed out.

How is The Gailes holding up? It's been a very long time since I last played the course, but it made a big impact on me.

Leslie Park? I have fond memories of this course as I must have played it a hundred times. I never quite got my head around the Hills work as it seemed 50/50 in terms of improving on what was a good L Packard design.

I probably prefer the holes on the hilly side of the road at Huron Hills. This is a very cool group of T Bendelow holes that probably gave me a first appreciation for short courses. I suspect the course is still in need of serious TLC and it deserves the attention of a clever archie. Of course, this space is used for parks and recs sledding/cross country skiing in winter so it's a good use of the land.

Lakewood Shores Gailes has been a course I've heard about since a junior golfer and never made the trip up to play (we are Lake Michigan people, not Lake Huron people  ;D ).  All this talk about it though has re-kindled my interest.  That will be on the list next summer along with the Loop.

And, shout out to the Gentleman Michael Whitaker for including Mammoth Dunes; what a delight that course is to play.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Sean - I last played the Gailes 10 years ago so probably not the best to speak on how it is holding up.

As for Leslie Park, it was the course I played all of my high school golf on. More of a nostalgic pick than anything but there are a lot of fun holes out there and a few bad ones. I too am a big fan of the hilly side of Huron, lots of fun quirk and potential!

I'd say Happy Hockey back but as a Red Wing and Wolverine fan, there is not much happiness to be had  :(

Sean - I was impressed with the "old school" design of Stoatin Brae. It is very much a lay-of-the-land course, with the holes interestingly connected. Lot's of natural features well used. Excellent walk. Take a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E13QqqEobgk

JC - Mammoth Dunes is loads of fun. I'd like to visit every year if I could swing it.

Derek

You are from Ann Arbor? Besides uni I lived there from late 1991 until the summer of '98. Ann Arbor is still my favourite place I have lived. Where do you live/play now?

Whitty

I think I will target Stoatin Brae when next in Detroit during golf season.
