The Grand Match - Silloth on Sunday 13th January 2019
« on: December 11, 2018, 10:43:19 AM »
The final of the UK Knock-out 2018 featuring Tim Gallant and Duncan Cheslett is to be played on Sunday 13th January at Silloth-on-Solway. It seems like an excellent opportunity to arrange the annual Clan gathering (cross-border division) at the same time so would those who would be interested in joining Tim and Duncan on the day please respond on this thread as soon as possible. Tee-times have yet to be booked but they will be just before midday which should be ample time to allow us to get round in daylight.

The green fee is £42.

Those who have so far expressed an interest in attending are;

Tim
Duncan
Sean
Mark (possible)
Rich
Adam L (possible)
Niall

If you’re interested can you please let me know over the next few days as I’d like to get the times booked by Friday of this week. Also if I’ve missed anyone please let me know.

Niall

As it turns out, Saturday would have been better for me.  I am less likely to make Sunday, but it is still possible if I make tracks after the match.  Which means I will want to travel north on Friday and look to play that day and Saturday.  Anybody else interested?

A full report with pictures would be full appreciated.  What was the weather, wind into or behind you on the 9th, was the 14th the pivotal hole in the match and any other features for those of us who have previously had the good fortune of playing Silloth.
Thanks.
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

Very good questions. I'm most interested in how they manage on 13.

On my one previous visit to Silloth, I played with Niall C, FBD, and my mate from Reddish who has a handicap of +5.

An abiding memory I shall take to my grave is Adam's driver off the deck on 13 into a howling gale. We climbed up the narrow gully to the upper fairway to find his ball 15 ft from the pin.

Some people play an entirely different game to the rest of us!

That was a truly magnificent moment in a Round of stunning shotmaking. Adam is beyond spectacular.

My money on halved in 7.  On one of the greatest holes in the UK.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

How many shots am I getting? What's Tim's handicap?

I'm a 12.  Tim looks like a 3 or a 4 to me!

Niall,

When you are booking this, could you please confirm with the club that Sean will be able to play from the men's tees this time?

It was an awful shame last time he trekked up, was forced to play from 4,000 yards and consequently missed the point!

Unfortunately that won’t be possible as I’ve already organised with the club to set up special Arble tees designed to leave him an 8 iron approach at every hole. Greenkeepers will of course be on hand in the event that there’s a change in wind direction and the tees need to be moved to compensate. ;)

Folks

I've provisionally booked the two tee-times at 11.40 and 11.50 on Sunday 13th. Can I ask everyone to firm up on whether they will make it so I can finalise the booking.

Thanks

Rich/Adam,

Thanks for responding. Can I ask those that are still undecided (Mark P and Sean) to let me know in the next couple of days, and if there are any lurkers who think they might want to join us, can you also please let me know in the next couple of days.

Thanks

Niall

ps. at the moment it looks like the weather will be OK but as we all know predicting the weather 10/11 days ahead in the UK is a risky business.

Dear Chopped Liver

My profuse apologies for the oversight. I look forward to seeing you next week.  ;D

Mark

Excellent stuff, likewise, it will be good to see you then.

All

I've booked the two tee-times at 11.40 and 11.50. It looks like we have two 3 balls so still room if anyone else wants to join us. If anyone does please let me know.

I suggest we all try and get there for 11am which should leave enough time for check in and a coffee before going out. I look forward to seeing everyone then.

Those attending;

Duncan
Niall
