Here’s another still of who I think is our man, looking straight to camera.
Two stripes on the cuff. I believe that’s for a Captain. Did MacK achieve that rank in the field?

And here with a slightly more oblique view of the face:

From all appearances, this chap appears to be quite short. Does anyone know how tall MacK was?

From the Chronology:

1906
November 28
“Surgeon-Lieutenant A. Mackenzie, M.B., of the Leeds Rifles Volunteers, was yesterday promoted Surgeon-Captain after over the three years service. The gallant doctor served in the Boer War.” His service was in the Army Medical Reserve of Officers.

Interesting. So, already a Captain...

I don't think you can assume that a rank in the Volunteers would necessarily be honoured if a man joined the regular Army.

From the MacKenzie Chronology;

31st May 1915

MacKenzie was given a commission in the Royal Engineers, with rank of Second Lieutenant, transferring from the Royal Army Medical Corps. ‘London Gazette’ listing “No 1 Company, Durham (Fortress) Engineers: Alexander MacKenzie (late Surgeon Captain, Royal Army Medical Corps) To be Second Lieutenant. Dated 31st May 1915”.

10th March 1917

2nd Lieutenant Alexander MacKenzie was seconded for duty with the regular Royal Engineers from the Territorial Force with the rank of Major.

It would appear that MacKenzie was never a Captain, having jumped straight from 2nd Lieutenant to Major.

Ehm,

That was in 1906.

There is no suggestion that MacKenzie went to the front in WW1 before September 1915. By then he was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers Territorials, based in Jarrow.

He didn't serve as a Captain or as a medical officer in WW1.

You said “was never a captain”, without the WW1 qualifier. So that’s okay then!
You know how pedantically picky we are around here!

It'd be kind of nice if the fairy tales were true and there actually is an after life.

Then we could sort this out, along with Merion and all the other GCA golden age mysteries....

Kalen,

I've spoken with God and the ghosts of Hugh Wilson, CB Macdonald, and Richard Francis and the story with Merion is pretty cut and dried, thanks.   Ditto Pine Valley.

Mike,

Thanks for the clarification, its hard to get reliable answers these days on just about everything....especially religious questions!!  ;D

P.S. If anyone saw a picture of me 25 years ago, there is no way they would think its me.  While some age like a fine wine, I'm more like a half empty carton of milk left under the back seat in the summer time, (think Val Kilmer here)  Other than Mrs. Brady, who doesn't look very different 20-30 years later?

Well, if it is him, his ability to seek out publicity, beating out probably hundreds of other medics for camera time, would go on to serve him well in his gca career.  Trent Jones and others would be proud!

So we are in agreement that Flynn should be given co - credit for Merion?

BTW... still don't think this is our man.

Sean,

I don't want to threadjack here but I stand by the accuracy and completeness of this 2013 piece as telling the definitive story.

http://golfclubatlas.com/in-my-opinion/cirba-mike-who-was-hugh-wilson/

The follow-up piece still falls into the category of informed speculation, or most likely scenario but has yet to be proven.

If you (or others) have any feedback please either send to me privately or start a new thread so we can discuss any particulars, thanks!
