Bunker Hill Golf Course - Extremely Private Course in Chicago
« on: September 29, 2015, 04:23:22 PM »

Anyone heard of this golf course?   I talked to someone who played it this year.    Supposedly it's owned by a famous rock singer, and it was a former home and golf course for someone extremely wealthy.  Other than that, I know nothing!

Didn't Kenny Rogers have his own course? I remember an instructional infomercial with Ken Venturi there in the 90s.

That's probably another thread in itself.   There can't be too many estates that have a golf course left.

Do not mess with the lead singer from Cheap Trick -- or anyone from Cheap Trick, for that matter. Only one of the two or three best bands ever in the American rock-n-roll canon; Shivas will back me up on this. :o

Definitely the Cheap Trick guys. Google pulled up a page for a concert they held there last year, invitation only apparently. Looks like nine holes from the aerial. Bunker Hill road just south of Plum Tree National around Harvard, IL.

I had heard it was Brett Michaels.    I'm not saying it's the world's greatest golf course, but certainly interesting.   They're can't be too many of these.

Looks like a glammed up Whitaker Woods. For the unfamiliar, this is not a compliment.

I think it's owned by the guys from Cheap Trick.

I know Rick Nielson's son, Aaron played at Miami of Ohio in the mid 90's, so there is a golf connection.

Is that the course that uses the hose to create a water fountain feature?

At least you didn't call me Brad.

But since this is "our" time, lets get back to golf.

Yes.... so who is the golf architect, when did this course open and who owns it?

There is almost nothing known about this place... I guess that's why I'm intrigued.    I doubt it is great, but it's rare to see a course so low profile.    I will get the report later this week from someone who just played it and report back.

You should look into Lake Zurich Golf Club.  That's the real unknown in this town...

Dave,

Not sure if you were being sarcastic or not, but the course sure doesn't look like much from an aerial view.  9 completely bunkerless holes, routed across what I'm guessing is completely flat terrain.  Here's the link to it...

PS.  There is one bunker on what looks like the 1st hole..  ;)

They have 30 members and this club goes back to the origins of golf in this town.  Big time private and secretive.  I'll bet that with all the guys from Chicago on this board, there aren't more than 2 of us that know somebody that belongs there.  I just met my first this summer after having never met anyone who belongs there for almost 40 years...

Sounds like you have a new challenge Dave...see if you can score an invite to the club that appears to be a tougher ticket than ANGC!!  ;D

Should you accomplish this, be sure to sneak a few pics in...

I asked the McHenry County Historical Society for help. Here is their response:

The McHenry County Historical Society does not hold any data at all concerning Bunker Hill Farm Golf club.  The reason why is that it is not a full 9 or a full 18 hole course.  Go to Google Earth on line and enter the address of the intersection of Bunker Hill and Brookdale Roads.  Move the map to the southwest.  You can see some fairways and some greens.  There are multiple different tees for the same fairways and greens giving the feeling that it is a full course.  Zero in on the building nearest the corner.  That is the same building seen on the Bunker Hill facebook page.  I drove all the lanes around the place and there is not even one single sign stating that any type of "resort" is located there.  One enters the place off of a gravel lane (Brookdale). There is a closed gate there and a carved notice on a piece of limestone stating "Private Property" and nothing else.  It is truly a hideaway.  I have lived in McHenry County all my life and have never even known that that place was there.

Maybe I'm missing a couple, but I only count seven greens, and that includes counting the double green as two. Weirdly placed tee areas make it look like you play back up some of the same fairways you played down. Looks very much like a vanity project from someone with the money and interest to build a few holes.
