A shot from a round I played in March, on the course at Ratho. A working sheep farm, and reputedly the site of Australia's oldest golf course. The course is only playable part of the year, and the fairways are the menu for the grazing sheep, with many greens protected by little chicken wire fences.

As an aside - this was the scene on the 8th tee (mid-iron par 3), with a typical Australian flavor greeting those about to play. The challenge - ignore the flapping laundry by the veranda out of image to the left, hit past a dunny (small outside toilet) over a fence, over the sheep, avoid the old antenna, stay left of the shed and hope you end up on the right side of the barbed wire fence up near the green.

"The truth about golf courses has a slightly different expression for every golfer. Which of them, one might ask, is without the most definitive convictions concerning the merits or deficiencies of the links he plays over? Freedom of criticism is one of the last privileges he is likely to forgo."

No words in affiliation do this photo and description justice. That's a fantastic line of charm (or is it instinct?) Thank you, Matthew.

Obviously Pebble Beach 7th Hole. It's not very original to post a picture of one of the most iconic holes in golf, but I just love how it looks in black and white on a foggy day on the Monterey Peninsula. That I almost hit the flagstick moments before made it even more memorable to me.

Winchester Country Club-
View from behind the 10th green.  The 8th hole is on the left.  The 11th (foreground) and the 14th (background) are on the right.

I lifted this one from Matthew's photobucket roll of others from Ratho in Bothwell:

I can still recall a relative of this chap slithering past my toes on a path through some scrubland just off the Great Ocean Road. Never been so scared. No idea what kind it was but I've never run so fast as afterwards in my life. Give me a fast downhill, downwind, left-to-right foot putt anytime!

And this could be agony or ecstasy, as well, depending on how your feel about 3.5 million dollar water features
on a 33 million dollar desert golf course filled with flowers and artificial streams.

My tap-in birdie makes me learn toward ecstasy, but it's sure an oddball finishing hole on an oddball course.

My entry is not up to the calibre of most photos on the thread, but it reminds me of a nice moment. Not a flashy or much-discussed course, and one of the least flashy holes on this course, I suspect:

It's too hard to choose from the courses I played this year (and better photos were taken by others of the more famous courses anyway), so I will have to go with my favorite from this past weekend: the approach at #8 at Mountain Lake ("Raynor"), with #9 ("Short") in the background.

Merry Christmas everyone.

RJ,

That's a mini-CM.

Two photos of real snakes will be posted shortly.

I should have taken a picture of the large alligator sunning himself on the fairway bank on # 8 Blue.

I tried to get him to move, but, he didn't budge an inch.

I got the message.

He wasn't letting me play through.
