The second hole at Shennecossett in Groton, CT has a rail line cutting directly across the approach.  Its a really neat feature as the tee shot needs to stay short of it, and the line sits half embedded in the approach hillside.

The train ran from Wrightsville to York,(PRR York & Lancaster line) and along w/the old rail bed several abandoned bridges crossing creeks can be seen in the woods off of several of the fairways.


edit:   the Shenny track is still in use, occasionally bringing stuff into/out of Electric Boat.  ;)

They were 'shiny' last spring when we played. I believe they're only used a handful of times per year - so almost fitting the bill.

I do believe that you used to be able to get the train direct to Broadstone(UK) from London, stop the train, step onto the platform and almost stumble on to the first tee. When you play I think 15 or 16 and walk from 9 to 10 i seem to remember seeing the old railway line/cuttings. I may be wrong...

Is it just too obvious to post "St Andrews?"  The old rail line into town, now a public walking path, is in play on both The Old and The Eden.  I don't know the history of its implementation, but a similar 'principal's nose' feature is used on the Eden 17th, with the bold play between the 3 bunkers and the railway.

I got a call from the great TPaul who says that the railroad was considered a hazard by the rules of golf, perhaps as early as the 1920's.  Maybe someone has some intel on this?

The Cross County streetcar line ran through the Algonquin Golf Club course in St. Louis until the mid 1960s. I worked on the greens crew there in the mid to late 1970s. One of my first jobs as a rookie grass cutter was to get a spinner (lawn mower) and cut two circles around trees for the gang mowers. As in "Tom, getcha a spinner and knock down some of that grass across the tracks". The railbed is still there. No pics, just memories of me and my spinner.  :)

Royal Adelaide of course has an operational line smack through the guts of the property. Not sure of local rule of playing off the line if train is coming, or of hitting moving train
