...or was the "Lido" model adopted, some combination of both ideas, or was surface irrigation the main reason that grass replaced the sand?

I've heard for years from a very longtime PHCC member (not named Pat M
), a Willie Tucker design, that he grassed Yankee Stadium.
Never seen any documentation confirming. I guess it remains purely legend.

It is interesting to note that droughts are not a recent phenomena as about 100 years ago Cali went from March 1, 1917 to Feb 15, 1918 - about 350 days, without rain.
