Help in making a decision (regarding courses near Orlando)
« on: February 23, 2009, 02:11:46 PM »
Am trying to decide on a morning round coming up next week and have a few options of courses to play.  Can I hear a few opinions (keep in mind Sugarloaf's conditions are a little iffy):

* Orange County National (Crooked Cat)
* Sugarloaf Mountain
* Mystic Dunes
* Highlands Reserve

FYI, the afternoon round is at Southern Dunes.

Brian,
There's no option in that group, even if all of the architecture was of equal quality.  ;)

I hear that SM's condition if more than iffy right now.  And it is about an hour from SD I think.  The Orange County National courses are ok.  I don't know anything about the other 2 courses.

I can't figure out why more people don't include Bridgewater in Lakeland (Steve Smyers) in the conversation when you are south of Orlando. Brad Klein gave it a 6 when he reviewed it before it opened. I played it and was very impressed given the quality of the site (or lack thereof). It can't be more than 20 minutes or so from Southern Dunes. It is adjacent to I-4 and probably only 30 minutes from Disney hotels.

Play Bridgewater in the morning and Southern Dunes is on your way back to Orlando. Interesting to compare the new Smyers with the older Smyers design.

Brian:

Southern Dunes and Bridgewater are almost equidistant from any Orlando location (only about 5 minutes difference at most). EDIT I just noticed that you are playing late at SD. BW is the same general direction as SD (both about the same distance from the I-4/27 interchange. I agree with Rob's suggestion to play BW early, SD late.

Regards,

Doug

Mission Inn is worth playing, but I think that may be too far away
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta
