linksland -- Good reply. As for "strong finishes" it must be decided exactly (or nearly so) where one "finishes". In many early routings it was assumed that a finish would be somewhere from 13 to 16 as this is, statistically, where most match plays ended. At many courses you will find a "strong finish" somewhere at 15 or 16 -- with 17 and 18 often being not quite so dramatic. Of course, now-days we assume a "finish" to be clearly the last string of holes, perhaps most often 16 through 18.

Can a case be made that the routing isn't what makes NGLA great ?

That the routing would seem to be rather limited due to the property lines, but that the design of the individual holes is where the genius shines through.

Or, even though the routing may be generally predetermined, is it still brilliant, with the genius of the design of the individual holes magnifying the overall result ?

With respect to Seminole, could alternate routings have produced a similarly spectacular result ?
