It was very nice to see that Matt Ginella listed Kyle Franz as one of the top under 40 architects. HIs work at MidPines and Pine Needles has been exemplary. Knowing Kyle since he started work here in the Sandhills I'm constantly amazed by his ability to recall countless details of holes played years before. The ability to draw upon this vast knowledge base and sensitively integrate it into his restoration work is what makes him special.

I enjoyed seeing Jay Blasi mentioned as well. His work at Chambers Bay, The Patriot, Sentry World, and most recently Santa Ana CC is quite impressive. Would sure be nice to see a Wisconsin native get a crack at building a course at Sand Valley ......

I find it funny that Matty G. can choose three of my former interns for a list of five, but of course he doesn't need to talk to me about them.  But it would have been tough for me to choose one above another.  There's a lot of talent out there, but the opportunities are so hit and miss that they are not always reflective of who SHOULD get them.

Of course his list is U.S.-centric; I believe there are more young architects in Europe who have actually designed a course or two on their own, if that's a factor in the evaluation.

P.S. to Jay M:  I agree about Kyle, but he is far from alone in having seen a lot of courses and remembering them in great detail.  You only know one guy; I'd say I know six or eight who have the same ability, and if they haven't seen quite as much it's only because they are younger.  But I could have told you that about Kyle 10-15 years ago, and you wouldn't have believed me back then.

FWIW, I write for Golf Advisor now, and yesterday we posted a piece I wrote that is a deep-dive into a single golf hole I find to be overlooked but brilliant: #12 at PGA Golf Club's Dye Course, just about half an hour south of me in Port St. Lucie.

Listening to Matty G and Geoff go back and forth on their "ideal 18" holes is about as pleasurable as a root canal.

Design week used to be a lot more interesting, and educational, when they actually brought in and interviewed architects.

Then again, Matty G probably can't get any architects to show up as he's either bad mouthed them or Gil Hanse is too busy to travel to Orlando.  ::)

The best part about the Golf Channel design week was when Matt Ginella offered tips to get on Pebble Beach and TOC. In other words, little known secrets on how to play public courses.  ::)

Thanks for noticing!

I don't follow Twitter, so I haven't seen any of that first-hand, and it's probably just as well.  It's lovely that the only two guys who attack me are the two architecture correspondents for Golf Channel.
