Eric,
It is my understanding that Mark has the JD. So why are you diss'n him with Mr. That should be Dr. Saltzman to you!

Eric,
I'm at least 90% sure to make this event! Should be a bucket of fun.

That's OK as long as you are at least 90% sure to be at KP earlier in June. If you aren't, then you are just avoiding me.
I know that fellow members Mac, JK, and Mr. Hendren (Defending Co-Champ with Mr. Saltzman!) will be participating as well and I'm looking forward to seeing all of them again.

If he's dressing like a barrister, I'll wear my judicial robe!
Mark,
The format is a gallimaufry. 2 person teams with handicaps over 45 holes. Friday evening we'll do a 9 hole elimination shoot out plus a smidgen of cross country golf. Maybe some basketball...Atari, Asteroids, and whatever else you guys like.
Mark,
Maybe some basketball...
I got skills!

The wine tasting will be held in the Founders Room.

Oh Kids!!! Only if others are interested in tasting.
Otherwise, if the Guinness is flowing, then we should be just fine Mr. Smith.
KB,
That's an absolute certainty with a few of the guys I know to be coming. We're all lucky there isn't a craps table.

Nope. No trees or asphalt either. Thus, no Double Barky Sparky.
Plenty of hard liquor tho.
Should be fun!

JNC:
I know it is bad form to criticize the host. But Eric, if you are going to take a video of that drive, I would recommend not to have 3 guys in a car listening to Meatloaf "2 out of 3 ain't bad" - uggghh.
You have the ultimate golf club with everything that a real man may desire - great golf, ample supplies of alcohol, best football tv room around, huge campfire, my travelling craps table - - - and guys listening to Meatloaf???
Thank you again for the invitation. I could not be more appreciative. However, JNC, you should be in charge of the music.
LOL

If I change my mind and drive to 5th Major next year will I need to rent an SUV to get there or will a regular car get through with no problems?
If I change my mind and drive to 5th Major next year will I need to rent an SUV to get there or will a regular car get through with no problems?
Sam,
Any car will get you there. The paved drive is one lane most of the way, so there are a couple of spots where you reach the top of a hill and will want to approach cautiously, anticipating any oncoming vehicles on the other side. The pavement widens as well at these points to help in this regard.
Glad you're coming. Hope the rest of your trip lines up as well. :)
Who knows? A couple of friends asked about flying out there on Monday and staying all week! I told 'em if they wanted to do that, then I'd gladly try to do the same. But, we're still what, 8 months out? There'll be some interesting options develop for sure. I like the idea of 7 steaks, 7 ways...NOw, that sounds fun. Might I suggest a pork chop to break things up!
D'oh! A stack of bacon wrapped shrimp might also work well. Are you still out there, wrapping things up?? I saw snow and coooold temps in the forecast today...
Eric will not "steer" you wrong on how to get to Dismal River:

Michael - was that your Meatloaf cd? Eric won't give me an answer. Honestly, I did not think anyone other than high school girls in the 70's listened to him. Did "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" come on next? Love the video, but how do you post it with that music selection.
This video could have a cut in the middle of it where the Miller Light girl tells the guys to 'man up".

It was the radio... Eric picked the channel! ;D
To be honest, can you think of anything else you'd rather be listening to than Meatloaf while driving down a road with cows on it?
"It Ain't the Meat, It's the Motion", by Southside Johnny and the Jukes
I'm mailing my deposit in today. If there is a shortest drive contest, my partner and I will win that one hands down! My only question is what's the buy in going to be for the Texas Hold'em Tournament Saturday night? I plan on winning back my entry fee!
Why are you dogging me?
Our boy Cory doesn't drink but I will drink his share and then some and he gets a hard-on when someone mentions poker.
I am looking forward to the event, I just hope nobody from Penn St or Syracuse comes because I'm young and don't play that game.

Well, if it's not too soon for that then it isn't too soon for me to ask if anyone wants to meet up in Denver and play Ballyneal on the way to Dismal. ;D ;D
How does one get to Dismal River?
How does one get to Dismal River?
Is it better to drive from Denver or connect to North Platte and drive up to Mullen?
I thought that drive was more like 6 hours from memory? Could be wrong. Driver faster?
My favorite trip has been to fly into Omaha, travel across the state playing multiple courses and fly back home out of Denver. Southwest does not charge extra for one way tickets.
We're at 38 thus far, so a little more than halfway to a full house. All are welcome!
Chris says we might even get to go cow tipping one night; or frog gig the Dismal - so sign up and book your plane tickets. This will be the best golf trip of your week!!

Eric...isn't Carson coming as well?
What airport?
Why isn't Clayman on the list?
Why isn't Clayman on the list?
Well it certainly would be a major downer without the A man on campus. He mentioned to me that he may have an opportunity to go overseas this summer so for now it's still too soon to commit. I'm hoping we see him.
Btw, we're going to go ahead and cap the field at 48 in order to get started with game planning - so a reminder to everyone on the list (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AreepRsmfba8dHdvSm1iQ2FkM0xOaWI2MEpXR3dhbnc&pli=1#gid=0) to please be sure to get your deposits sent in before April 1. If there are spots available at that time we may extend it out for a bit in order to achieve #'s to round out foursomes.
Eric,
Planning question for you. I see on the website that the format is 54 hole Net Better Ball. Are we playing 18 each day, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or are we playing 36 one of the first two days with Sunday being optional? Thanks.
Eric,
For those of us who don't have a partner yet, do you need our handicaps, or does it matter?
Kalen

Can you pair me with Mike Chirstensen? It would really mean a lot to me.

Sure, I guess. That would free me up to play with JNC, though that means I'd have to walk every round. On second thought...

.5 beers / hole. Looking for you to bump the average.

I was on that email, too. Work on your reading skills, Red.
I wouldn't take him from you, anyways. I know that you two can't live without each other.
Sam,
Load up at the bar. I can't believe you don't drink beer. Allergies?
JC,
Christensen just mailed me and said thanks but he isn't going to go pick you up at the train station in BFE! ;D
So psyched for this event The hardest part is trying to narrow down the options on the way to Dismal. Thinking Wildhorse and Awarii right now since we're coming from the east.
Anybody else going to be in that neck of the woods earlier in the week?
Only thing better than a Saturday evening screwdriver is a Sunday morning screwdriver!

I am certainly unwashed but one thing I am not is a drinker of mixed drinks made to make liquor more palatable to the fairer sex. ;D
I thought the entire purpose of a screwdriver was to just 'get right' prior to an early morning tee time.

We still planning on doing a Texas Hold em tourney on one or more nights?
I need to pay for my travel costs somehow!! ;)
After hearing testimonials from Brother Eric at "Thaw Out" and watching the YouTube video of the drive in.
I would think the steaks are rather tasty.
I'm in.
Chris and I are embarking on a total training program for our team. I spoke with Chris today and he was in the midst of heat training. I am working on proper hydration this evening. We have contacted Tiger, himself, regarding a putting lesson. The design group at Under Armour who designed The University of Maryland's football uniforms is designing our team wear. To quote either Joliet Jake or Elwood Blues, "We're on a mission from God."After hearing testimonials from Brother Eric at "Thaw Out" and watching the YouTube video of the drive in.

Doc - your note made my day. And your teaming with Chris Shaida!! Wow - is this going to be fun.
Hey Kalen - I expect there will be card games going all night long! Watch out for Jake Spoon...plus don't forget Mike George is bringing his craps table..
Patron - You deserve a much better partner than I. I understand JC Jones is available...
One thing I know about Chris S., is he likes a good cigar! And so do I?
Eric, I don't have a partner, but I'd prefer a 14 handicap who regularly breaks 80. Thanks. TW
Do I have to send in a deposit for this? Or can we take it out of the budget for course number II ?
Be careful, Cory is a shark.Damn Sam. I haven't played live poker in over a year and your already giving me a reputation? Unless we all get on our computers and play on the internet I don't thing I'm going to do that well. The only thing that may work to my advantage is I, of course, will be the most sober player at the table ;D

We should try to get a count for how many people are playing poker so we know if some of us should bring extra chips and cards.

CARPOOLING
Several have messaged me re: getting there from airports in Denver and Omaha. I suggest getting together in groups and renting cars, mini vans or SUVs for the journey. If you would like to do so, post here with flight times and I'll help to sort it out. Thanks!

Eric and I will be leaving two days before and driving from Tennesse. We are stoping in Indiana to pick up Barney. We have room for one more. IM me if you need a ride.

Eric:
I have a feeling that the money that I could make from being "the house" at a participants blackjack table might be able to pay for my entire trip for 10 years!!! Also, what is up with the "all initials team" of CJ and JNC or as they will be called after the outing - "Cart Jockey" and "Just Not a Challenge"
If Tom joins the group in Dismal, do you think Jack would come out too to give a 2nd guided tour ;D
I actually am heading to Vegas next week (after all the golfers leave). After taking down The Venetian casino ;), I should be in fine shape for any wagers in the sand hills - - - which really means after coming home broke from Vegas, I will be hiding money from my wife for 3 1/2 months to cover the Dismal trip.
Really looking forward to the trip. Nothing better than beating a golden domer!
And, since you have involked the Domers, you will greatly enjoy your 3:30 A.M. wake-up call, probably not as much as the 4:15 one that will follow.

I promised Patron I would walk...from the cart to Jack's! May walk the whole thing with my new and very cool "Dismal" MacKenzie. I just hope my belly outter doesn't slow me down!
Since we don't post scores at Dismal River, the Tournament Chair has assured me an 13-15 handicap.
You may prevail at poker, buit I can all but guarantee Patron and I will win the $20 buy in "Man vs Food" contest if I can avoid the Guinness curse. Kavanaugh and Smith will be too full of beer to mount but a token challenge. You see, it takes alot of calories for me to maintain this weight.

I think I'm going to bring MOM.
Mike,
Glad you're coming and if you don't have a partner by the weekend, don't worry, a lot of others are in the same boat and I'll be making pairings when the field is finalized in the coming weeks.

Tony Two Bags
It's a 10 dayer. 1 bid as of yesterday.
Was it you?
Need four more players to round out the perfect match play bracket.
2 man teams. 4 Divisions. 9 hole matches. When are you arriving?Sweet! Seven nine hole matches with a shoot out for winners? That's freaking awesome. I'm arriving Friday morning. Playing Prairie club Thursday with my 50/50 partner. Hopefully you'll have a 65th in reserve if he can't make it for the whole thing but I'm still hoping he makes it!
Delighted to hear Mr. Choi will participate. I have lost 20 lbs. year-to-date and will have my game restored to its full glory to avenge the beat-down he gave me at last year's KP.

Wow, just looked at the lineup of those entered/paid. Great group. Dismal may never be the same. I am intrigued by Anonymous and Partner. Is it poor form to bring my Confidential Guide along just in case Anonymous turns out to be its author?? :)
1200 Mile drive each way for one day of golf? Hell I wouldn't even do that for a 400 mile drive. ;)
You may as well take a few days off and just join the event....
Great job Eric! Can't wait to see the matchups!
This is going to be a beautiful event.
By the way, add Ted Cahill to your list of people - he is joining us earlier in the week and so will come and play the 5th - sorry if that skews the numbers but you may have another drop out in the meantime...
Eric:
I would have gotten your deposits from the people in my flight before you posted them ;)
Honestly cannot wait. Also love having the host in my flight - as hosts never win ;D
Great work.
Not in Nebraska, I'm not..............I assumed our old buddy E would throw the "Thaw Out" PBR consumption champs a bone. But, no.

Chris
ps Dr Wellman thought we should get a bye in the first round because...well...because he's a Doctor I guess?!
And Cory's a pro, so we got that going for us. He's ineligible to win.Ineligible? Your just mad you don't have the honor of losing to me during the tournament.

Love it! Let the bitchfest begin! ;D
...
Chris,
Cozy up to the Georges. They have (or will have) ALL the money!!
Doc Wellmon,
I missed out on playing with you and Schaida at Hilton Head. Not gonna let that happening again. What can I say, I like you guys.
Eric - If anyone else wants to be "the house", please allow them to do so. My brother and I are just happy to be included.
Nothing in there about cutting stokes by 25%. That was some invention by whining "scratch" golfers who are really 6 handicappers. As one of those whining scratch golfers(hopefully I don't play like a 6) I would have to say that if we are going to do the USGA recommended method then we should consider flighting teams by handicap to give us low handicappers some sort of realistic shot. If I have to give an 18 handicapper 9 shots in a match we all know what's going to happen in that match. I've never worked at a club that had a Member Guest with this format that didn't flight teams by handicap.

Eric,
God bless you for even trying this.
It is not the Masters people! If everyone plays and Eric arbitrarily decides the winner based upon who pukes less than Patron, he should still get thank you cards!

Tell me more about this Patron. Is it hooked up to the carts??

Keith,
My sentiments exactly. I'm excited to play the golf course, meet a bunch of GCA nuts and enjoy some great food and cold beer. A little bit of competition is nice, but secondary (I hope my partner feels the same way).
TK
Tyler,
No worries, your partner (me) feels exactly the same way you do! My only expectation is to have a great time both on the course and off. Our wonderful host should feel free to run the event the way he wants to - as long as he keeps his promise of filling me up with beers on the first night! ;)

I'm flying out Monday night and was thinking of playing at either Fossil Trace or Common Ground on that day.
My plan is to leave Dismal at about lunch time on Sunday, play a round at Wild Horse and then drive part of the way to Denver that night...

I am beyond giddy. 72 holes at BallyNeal, 54 at Sand Hills, 18 at Prairie Club (dunes) and the 5th major. It may just be the best week of my life to date!!!!
The Thursday before the 5th major - I've emailed a request just waiting to hear - hopefully it should be fine - are you playing there also? We should meet up...Brian,
I've been reading in another thread that 4.5 hours is fast for a GCA.com event :o :'( ::)
Eric, put myself and Shreiner out first will ya? :D
Guys:
No worries about my match against Eric. I will have so much liquor in him that our match will be over by the 12th hole - so there will be one group off the course in less than 3 hours ;D
My partner doesn't drink, we are 1 up on all yall. Cory treats his body like a temple.I don't know about temple, I could be a little sluggish if they give us a breakfast buffet. I got a weakness for bacon. Hopefully we get Eric the match after Michael pumps him full of liquor.

If there ever was an event TGC should cover, it's the 5th Major.
The hype is too much for even me! I'm going to Disney World with Cheech that week instead. :P
Can't say I'm all that proud to be considered a pushover lush golfer but Team Hambone/Smith will not be slowed by our opponents feeble attempts to over serve us. Like the song says, this ain't my first rodeo. Prepare thyself to hear the words, "YOU'RE 1 down". :-*

12 teams. I guess you could say we had a home field advantage...played it in my hometown at the four courses at Fairfield Glade Resort. In that one we mixed it up pretty good. Four ball, foursomes and 2 man scramble. Credit my partner at the time for his phenomenal play on the Sunday at Stonehenge. He made everything he looked at!
I'm booked as a single at Bayside at 3:40 pm on the 28th if anyone would like to join me.
Bogey
I thought the whole point of "handicapping" was to put players on equal terms.
That's precisely right, Kalen: the systems works just fine for individual players. It doesn't work for multiple player games. The answer is either to adjust down (the number I usually see is 80%) or to have a pot for gross, so that what the low handicaps piss away and never have a chance to win in the net game, they get back in the gross game.

Kav-Is the Dismal Devil scheduled to make the trip and where does he stand on the trampoline effect of modern age drivers?
in his honor I think the Saturday night after hours party will be in our cabin.Go ahead, I plan on playing poker in the clubhouse until I have to leave.
I can't tell if we're really supposed to give our hdcp or just whine about not getting, or giving strokes ;D
For the record, young Ryan is a 0.7 and old me is a 7.
7 is our lucky number

Is the field and flights and finalized?
Wanted to bump this as we are about 4 weeks away!

You'll be happy to know that one of your fellow Houstonian GCAers, Cliff Walston, signed up today. Cliff is player #67 and I am hoping that the other GCAer who emailed me last night about possibly playing will come forth and claim #68 in order to bring this field into balance once again!
I'm very sorry to say that some unexpected work commitments compel me to sit this epic out. To Eric, Ted, and Brian, my pards...my profound regrets. I was REALLY looking forward to this trip and needed the respite. Alas, it isn't in the cards just now. I wish everyone a great experience and vow to get out there soon!
Kris :(
So, can we assume that whoever gets paired with Brian is the guy that Eric wants to drop out next?!
Kalen, that is too bad I was looking forward to meeting you. In your honor, I will have a drink on you. ;)So, can we assume that whoever gets paired with Brian is the guy that Eric wants to drop out next?!
Speak of the devil,
That guy is me....for dropping out that is. Due to both unforseen work and family committments, I too must drop out. I'm really bummed about this and apologize to Sam, Cory and others with whom I was going to meet up with both before and after the event.
Eric and Chris J,
Please use the deposit I sent in to buy a few drinks for the guys...or as far as it will go! I'm really bummed about this, and sincerely hope I can get out there in the near future. Thanks again for organizing this and will make every effort for next year.
Kalen
Kalen,
It was great talking to you this morning and like I said, we will definitely miss having you there, but it is just another golf trip...many more to be had. :)
All the best,
Eric
Kalen,
Sorry to hear that, thanks for the drink and please send more money. :)
I'm also disappointed I couldn't make a few guys wallets lighter by taking some money off them in the nightly poker game. :)As the non-drinker of the group, I think Kalen's deposit should go towards funding the poker game ;D
Kris,
Thanks for ruining everything.
Brian.
I'll tell you when we're finished!
You will be putting at night? Will the daughter of the dean be there?
Friday, 6/29 -- Practice round in the morning. Tournament rounds begin with tee times starting around 9, playing three 9 hole matches. Are we now starting at 9 on Friday instead of noon?

Sam Morrow - Dismal River is in the MOUNTAIN time zone.
Sam
Sand Hills and Dismal are in the Mountain time zone. Prairie is in the Central.
My Vag does have a bit of sand, and both seed and mulch.
I'm on the standby list and may play a few holes with everyone. If not, I'll be keeping the beer cold.
Chris:
Thanks for everything. Really looking forward to the trip and greatly appreciate everything that Eric and you are doing.
By the way, please take no offense, but you may be the ugliest beer cart girl ever ;D
I'm certainly the heaviest beer cart girl around.
We don't have a beer cart...interferes with the Fairy Ring.

If you buy beer from a beer cart is it real beer since it's in a cart?
Eric do we have flights and ready to announce matches? The talking needs to begin, Cory is full of piss and vinegar.

Should have the field and flights buttoned up by the weekend.

A cowboy cut porterhouse (sourced and Dry Aged in Mullen) that should be pre-ordered before arrival so that everyone who wants one can get one. $75.
For those less inclined to tackle "this monster, this beast", there are of course rib eyes and filets of equal quality on the dinner menu.
Any takers? PM me. Thanks!

When I went to grad school in Chicago, the "guy" who cut my hair told epic stories about HIS nightlife and on occasion went to parties wearing chaps.
Only chaps.
He called it a "full moon" party.
Dear Lord, don't let the moon be full in Nebraska.

If GCA is anything it is the fat girl looking to go where she isn't judged. If Dismal is anything it is a place where no one visitor is bigger than the club. I can't justify the popularity of this event, I'm just not fighting it.
No argument there. It was the best golf trip me and my buddies have ever taken.

In keeping with traditional major championship protocol, a sixsome kicks things off at the 2012 5th Major:
MATCH #1 Friday 6/29 @ 8:01 AM
(OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP division)
Tony Weiler / Mac Plumart
Brian Sheehy / Will Spivey
John Lyon / Eric Smith

And I'm definitely thinking of bringing my gun!You should get a holster and bring it with you on the golf course. "Is this 20 footer good?" Yes, yes it is.

Cory- You saying "quick nine" is a bit redundant, no? :)I'm dragging Sam around with me so it should take at least 45 minutes ;D

Any possibility of those of us with late times Friday getting out for a quick nine before our time, perhaps off the back?

I can't speak for Bernhardt. And your claim to be more than a 6 is ludicrous and yes, perhaps even greedy. Are you so desperate to win that you would grovel for more shots? Only Ran and I are allowed to do that.

Dismal to Sand Hills is 40, or so minutes. Both Dismal and SH are off of rt 97, 9 miles apart when you get to 97.

You're on a roll!
Remember the golden rule. One bottle of water for every four beers.
Extras ??? You're going to be playing with a set with no emotional baggage, no tomahawks into wet turf, no helicopters after whiffs, shanks or the like, and you want extra strokes. Sounds like grounds for a few less strokes to me!
Thursday I will be at Sand Hills before heading to Dismal.Apparently being somebody's partner in the 5th Major isn't good enough to get invited to Sand Hills :'(
Sorry if I missed info/discussion about the following:
Temperatures seem to be ~100 in Mullen. Will most people therefore be riding as opposed to walking? Are carts included in fees? Do they have pull carts available for rental?
Does the lodge have internet access?
Day 1 is in the books. Sam and I will need a tremendous charge on Day 2 to have any shot at the shootout. We were victims of birdie barrages from Matt Bosela and Ryan Mahaffey.
Many thanks to Eric, Chris and the entire staff at Dismal for an amazing weekend in the Sandhills. Everything about the event was fantastic. The food was great, the golf course was in tremendous shape, and the staff was phenominal.
Favorite on course moment: My partner Sam Morrow and I both had eagle points on the "windmill" par 5 4th hole during one match. Neither one of us gets that many eagle putts so that was pretty cool.
Favorite off course moment: Tony Weiler acting like a giddy school girl while Tom Doak signed his Confidential Guide. My favorite quote from Tony: "This just made my year". Little tip for the rest of you. If you are handing Tom your confidential guide to sign, the first words out of your mouth should not be "I promise I will not put this on ebay" :)
Tony and I had a tremendous day at Prairie Club on Thursday so I think it's ok to poke a little fun at him.
We're off for the back 9 tour later this morning. More to come.
This thread isn't really complete without a good picture of our fearless leader. Apparently getting a tour from Tom Doak of his course under construction brings out emotions in people that I don't really understand ;D

Brett, from what I gather, the top number is the score for a nine hole match (5.5 for example, in a match where the losing team had 3.5 points). The bottom number is the cumulative score, with the final total in the last box. Handicap numbers appear next to the player names.
What is really great is that so many people got to find out what a few of us have known for a while, Eric Smith is one of the best guys out there and there is nobody better.
Wow. I got home at 2am and slept until 4 this afternoon. 8 days in the sandhills whipped me pretty good!
As to the photo posted now three times (!) on this thread ;D; I love Sam I Am. The moment I first saw him outside the window at Jack's I sprinted out the door to give him a big ol' bear hug. It was surely one of the least disappointing internet friend meetings in the history of the white fire grid. At least on my end anyway. ;) Just as fun and real a guy as you'll ever hope to meet. So we have our little memento thanks to our good friend Cory and his telephoto lens. I'm a little groggy but I want to post about the event. Thanks too all of you for the kind words.

A list to help get things rolling...
Things overheard on the back patio of Signature 4 last weekend:
1. "What if a lion jumped up out of the grass behind me and ate me right in front of you guys?"
2. "Listen, the stars we're seeing now are a picture of the stars from like 200 years ago. Seriously. No, seriously, they are."
3. "Where's Hogan? Asleep? Go wake his ass up!"
4. "Who wants another vodka tonic?"
4b. "Who needs another scotch?"
5. "I have become comfortably numb."
6. "It's midnight. (carlights) HAS to be Mike George and his crew. Let's drive down to their cabins and drink beer with them!"
7. John Lyon meet Donna Chang.
8. "Win this one and you're one step closer to Jack"
And this is all BEFORE the tournament started...
It was a seriously good time seeing all of you out at Dismal River. I had more fun than I deserve. And what a great crew of guys to share the week with. All were there to have fun and enjoy some competition which can lead to a very good event. We had a lot of help. Greg Dennis and his staff are consummate professionals and understood and executed the plan without a hitch. I am so proud of the job they did. THANK YOU.
Jagger Mandrell and the rest of the grounds crew have the golf course playing like a racetrack in challenging conditions - 90 days without rain - and a new golf course siphoning irrigation water from the existing one for its grow-in. Through all of the challenges they are facing out there, the tournament conditions were absolutely superb. THANK YOU.
Chef Eric - my friend with skills like you would not believe. THANK YOU. I know most of you had plenty of opportunities to interact with Chef (or Big E, as I like to call him) and discover that he is a people person too. Loves to chat it up with his 'subjects' and get feedback on what it is he and his staff do best - make kick ass food. I can't believe I stayed 8 nights and forgot to eat CJ's pork chop, but I did. Had everything else though. :)
Tom Doak - THANK YOU. That was the best 4 hours I have ever spent on a golf course. You don't know how much it means to me that you took the time to do this for our group. I can't wait until she opens.
Chris Johnston - THANK YOU. I know you don't like for me to give you any credit so just shut your eyes for twenty seconds, okay?
I just spent a week with Chris, shared breakfast and dinner with him most every day and rode shotgun in his Polaris for hours on end all over the place. Heck we went places I didn't even know existed on the property. Lots of them. I know many of you know this about him already, but I'm going to say it again - Chris has to be one of the most knowledgeable, passionate and generous guys out there in an ownership role in the business today. I am extremely fortunate to know him and even more so to call him a friend. I could not have put this thing together in the manner in which we did if it weren't for him.
Last but certainly not least, the 59 of you who joined me at my club in the middle of Nebraska for a golf tournament on the week of the Fourth of July: THANK YOU. This Bud's For You!!! What an incredibly fun bunch of GCAers and friends we had out. I had the opportunity to speak with each and every one of you and surprisingly enough for me I could pick each of you out of a police line up after spending a few days with you at Dismal. Pretty cool stuff. I hope to have the opportunity to play golf with all of you over the coming months and years. Let's do it again in 2013. One step closer to Jack!
p.s. Rode back to Denver with my partner and fellow Dismalite John Lyon and I think you'll have an opportunity to come back even sooner for his clambake. Stay tuned.
If anybody is still in metro Mullen - be sure to check out the July 4 fireworks in town. I was invited by about 6 different people from DR and Sand Hills, and I still didn't go (we were hitting the road for our drive back to Philly early the next morning).
Honestly, not going is one of my life's regrets. I really should've gone. The people in Mullen are amazingly friendly, and I miss them too.

Dan:
This isn't the year for fireworks out here; it's been so dry that fireworks of any kind have been canceled / outlawed in many towns this week due to the fire hazard. I don't know about Mullen for sure, but we are in Rapid City tonight and they are bummed that the show had to be canceled.
P.S. about Nebraska in general: I got in the car Saturday morning in Rapid City and started driving to get to the club in time for my tour. Didn't think to check if the tank was full, just assumed it was ... so, 90 miles later I am coming down the hill toward Chadron, Nebraska and I run out of gas for the first time in my life ... fortunately, only a mile or so from town [I can see the station in the distance, but it was 95-100 degrees]. So, I get out of the car to start walking, and swear I am not out of it for 30 seconds when a car coming OUT of town stops to offer me a lift back in to the gas station. I don't think I'd get that help in Traverse City.
...but we are in Rapid City tonight and they are bummed that the show had to be canceled.
...
P.S. I would like to say I am sorry for handing out such a beating against Bogey yet again, but I can't... :)
BTW, I'm switching to Apple.
Eric Smith's Signature Cabin was simply incredible. Having drinks under the stars and getting to know Eric and John on Thursday night was maybe my favorite part of the trip. JNC - great guy - tell me when your voice finishes changing ;D

Hands down, Eric's Hundred Hole Hike.
Another good one...Tony meeting Tom Doak.
Eric:
Forgot to mention another good one. Aaron and I played 18 on Friday morning before our matches. When in the fields, we found 3-4 Titliest PRO VI's with the 5th Major logo. Very nice of you to leave them there for us. Very generous ;)

3. Best image - driving into Dismal at night and seeing the clubhouse and cottages lit up on top of the hill about a mile out - gorgeous. Best story - My partner (a 9 handicap) shot 34 against a team in our flight. They joked that he was a sandbagger, to which my partner indicated that he only plays well when it doesn't matter and he threw them his putter headcover, reading "Fragile".... we were in last place in our flight at the time.
Ah, yes...my bad. They could be doppelgangers for one another (from this angle anyway ;D).
You're dead to me

Hey sandbagger, I believe you also shot 34 in that round, did you not? :) Dave and I figured out that we lost 2, 3, 4 in our first match; 1, 2, 3 in our third match; then 4, 5, 6 (our first three holes) in that fourth match with you two. Every one with birdies (most of them gross) Seemed we were always behind the eight ball less than an hour into our front nine matches!
It was fun being in a match where every hole was won by a natural birdie or eagle, even though we were on the losing end of it. The only thing that would have made it better would be for Aaron to have got that ace on the last hole. Would have been a fitting end to the beating you two put on us!
Lots of black socks in those pics, is Mr Sheey the only one in long strides?
Eric
What is with all the black socks? Not a great look.

Funny, I don't remember the windmill being there when I took that photo ;) But I do like it. Make it happen CJ!
