Title: Inaugural "Midwest Mashie" - GCA Event: Lost Dunes Golf Club - May 15-16
Post by: George Freeman on March 13, 2010, 11:57:07 AM
Gents,

The group size has been finalized with the club and the event has been set.  I apologize for starting another thread but it is easier this way.  Details are as follows:

Where:  Lost Dunes Golf Club - Bridgman, MI

When:  May 15th & 16th, 2010

Teams - "East vs. West":

East
1. Tom Doak
2. Ken Fry
3. Jonathan Becker
4. Rich Hetzel
5. Jon Heise
6. Kris Belcher
7. Matt O'Brien
8. Ari Techner
9. Jin Kim
10. Patrick Boyd
11. Carl Nichols
12. Brad Tufts
13. Andrew Lewis
14. Matt Harrison
15. Bill Steele
16. Matt Schmidt
17. Tim Nugent
18. TBD - Captain's Pick

West
1. George Freeman
2. Eric Terhorst - Sat only
2a. Zack Molnar - Sun only
3. Chuck Brown
4. Jeff Tang
5. Jim Tang
6. Jon Winick
7. Dave Schmidt
8. Dan Moore - Sat only
8a. ___________ - Sun only
9. Sven Nilsen
10. Kevin Cahoon
11. Mike Kennedy
12. Rob Bice
13. Chris Flamion
14. Steve Salmen
15. Pat Craig
16. David Cronan
17. Mark Smolens
18. ____________

Alternates:

** Still have one open spot for Sundays round.

Lodging:  The club has been gracious enough to reserve all five of their cottages for our group and I would love to have as many people as possible stay in them.  Each cottage has four bedrooms and each bedroom has two queen size beds and a separate bathroom.  Price is $160 per room per night (i.e. $80 per bed, double occupancy).

**ALL TIMES EASTERN STANDARD**

Golf:  The first groups will tee-off on Saturday around 1-1:30 pm.  Sunday tee-times will start around 7:30 am.

Golf will be $105 per day, which includes a cart.  Caddies will be available for anyone who wants one - $50/bag plus tip (suggested $25-30).  All foursomes must have at least one Caddy, so if everyone is in a cart, a forecaddie will be needed - $50/foursome plus tip (suggested $10-15 per bag).

Format:  Hasn't been finalized yet but we're thinking best ball matches on Saturday and either alternate shot or singles matches on Sunday.  All match-play (of course).

Food:  Even though their kitchen usually isn't open this time of year, the club has been generous enough to fire it up for us as an accommodation.  Food and prices will go as follows:

*As a disclaimer, the food at Lost Dunes is rumored to be EXCELLENT*

Saturday Lunch pre-golf: Box lunch w/ turkey wraps, chips, snickers and a drink - $12
Saturday Dinner: Buffet for our group w/ Chicken, pasta, salad, etc. - $25
Sunday Breakfast:  Breakfast buffet - $10
Sunday Lunch:  Pizza buffet - $10

Ideally we'll have everyone partaking in all the meals above, but if for some reason you can't do lunch on Saturday or lunch on Sunday, let me know so I can give the club an accurate # for each meal.

Unfortunately we cannot bring our own bottles of wine due to state regulations.  All alcohol will be Al a Carte.

Other:  Saturday evening after dinner, hopefully we can persuade Tom to speak about Lost Dunes and have a Q&A.  Should be awesome (we did this at the Kingsley Club with Mike DeVries and it was great).

I am assuming everyone on the list has confirmed, so if for some reason you now cannot attend, please let me know ASAP.

Nothing formal has been set up for Saturday morning as far as additional golf.  There are plenty of options available in the area.  It sounds like some guys are already planning on playing the Warren Course in South Bend.

** Special thanks to Tom Doak and Pete Han, the head pro at Lost Dunes, for the help setting this up.  It couldn't have happened w/ out them.  Also, Sean Arble has been generous enough to donate a Mashie for the event which will serve as our trophy and will be held by the winning team for the year.

Questions/comments welcome.

Looking forward to it!

I just edited the list as Michael Hendren notified me that he can't make a hard confirm.  Paul Thomas has moved up into his spot.

Thanks to you and Tom (and Pete Han) for setting this up.  Are the cabins available both nights, or just Saturday?
Thanks again,
Carl

Excellent! Thank you for setting this up.

I'm willing to share a room with a non-snoring participant, or I'll take my own room if available.  Whatever works best/is easiest for the organizers.

Sorry Rob, it's been fixed.

We can finagle the teams once we get there if guys feel the need to swap (Paul Thomas for instance is from Chicago too).

George,
Glad I made the cut.  If you need formal confirmation for your list, I'm in for golf, caddy, food, and accommodation, tho I'm told that I snore (I can neither confirm nor deny this fact).  Feel free to place me in a room with another snorer as I intend to drink enough Miller Lites that he won't bother me. . .

George,

Pencil me in for a single room if available, otherwise double is fine, caddy both days and all meals. Thanx! I forgot about the silly Michigan corkage laws.  Only cloud on what is setting up to be an awesome event! But how the heck did we lose Tim Nugent from the Chicago side?

As you can see, we're a little overweight w/ the Chicago/West folks...

Thanks to those who made this possible.  I'm in for all meals and a room in a cottage.  Single room preferred.  Also definitely want a caddy.

I assume best way to get there is to fly to Chicago and drive.  Anyone know how long a drive it is?

Sounds like a great weekend and thanks to all who havehelped to set it up!

Sign me up for a room in one of the cabins, and I'm all for a double room as after enough Goose Island's I could sleep next to a polar bear and not know it!  :P

I'll probably take a caddy as well. Once we know the groupings we can figure out if there are other guys taking loopers and people can utilize double bagger.

Sign me up for at least the dinner and breakfast at LD. I can't make any promises that I won't be making a stop at Redamaks either on the way there or back for a burger!!! :)

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Website has been updated with a schedule tab and a golf pairings tab.

www.midwestmashie.com (http://www.midwestmashie.com)

I'll update both lists if you post here (or pm me) that you want a caddy and/or if you specify your room requests.

Also George, even though Captain Tom already rejected me once from the East team I would be happy to play for them and give one of the Chicago guys a spot on the West since my Minneapolis roots and current FL digs allow me to swing either way.

Wish I could play, then there might actually be someone playing with a Mashie.

As for airports, it might be worth looking into Kalamazoo. Should be only 30-45 min. away.

If everyone on the East team would check in with me and let me know their handicaps, and who on the team they already know, I'll try to figure out who to pair up accordingly.

I hope that everyone will be open to the idea of alternate-shot play on Sunday instead of singles.  For one thing, we'll get out of the members' way more quickly; for another, it's great fun, and it lets you look at the golf course a bit more instead of focusing so much on your score.  Remember, this is a TEAM event, and not just a chance for you to play Lost Dunes at a good rate.

P.S.  I have never captained a team like this before; now I wish I had hit up Ben Crenshaw to get me a bunch of those cool Sunday shirts from Brookline.  ;)

As for some of the other details:  Kris and I'll will want to stay at the cabin, I'll try and get Hetzel to join us...  I doubt we'll want a caddy.

Can't wait, it's getting nicer and nicer out here!

If these shirts are the direction your taking your East team I am just fine staying on the West.  ;D

George I am a 10 handicap. The two most famous Jason's on GCA can attest to the legitimacy of that.

The Lodging page found here: http://www.midwestmashie.com/?page_id=19 (http://www.midwestmashie.com/?page_id=19) has been updated with room sharing for those that have posted their preferences or pm'ed me.

Also the golf pairings page found here: http://www.midwestmashie.com/?page_id=22 (http://www.midwestmashie.com/?page_id=22) has been updated with those interested in using a caddy.

And finally on the teams page found here: http://www.midwestmashie.com/?page_id=8 (http://www.midwestmashie.com/?page_id=8) I have started to add the handicaps as they are posted.

If anyone has any suggestions for other information to post or anything else on the site let me know.

I will gladly share a room with someone in the cabin.

I will walk and carry my own bag...

I will NOT be eating that last lunch on Sunday as I will need to get on the road to Cincinnati right after the round!

Handicap on 11/10/09 was  15.5

PS:  Any word on an early Saturday morning round at ND Warren?

I would be surprised if Lost Dunes can provide as many caddies as have been requested.  School's not out yet, and they don't have a very big pool to draw from as it is.  Perhaps I'll be pleasantly surprised, but hopefully some players can carry their own bag or use a cart if the caddies are in short supply.

I guess I got the impression that caddies were mandatory for each player? I have no problem at all carrying my own bag, but would generally like to do anything in my power to not take a cart.

Perhaps the ideal personal situation would be to assign a forecaddie to a group of riders/walkers.

Is that "personal situation" or "personnel situation," Pat?  If the former, I hope its cleared up by May.  I'll be pulling a half Melvyn, carrying my own bag, but checking yardage markers.

George,

Notice how most of the low cappers are on the Michigan side and they haven't even weighed in with Ari Techner or Ken Fry yet.

Will our Sun Mountain carts be permitted?  Otherwise I would also like a caddy.

Notice how most of the low cappers are on the Michigan side and they haven't even weighed in with Ari Techner or Ken Fry yet.

That'll just give 'em more to whine about after the Chicago side leaves with the trophy in hand.... 8)

Gents,

Per the club, we will be able to either walk with a Caddy or ride with a forecaddie (if the entire group rides).

Really looking forward to this- and am confident in Captain Doak's ability to "have a good feeling" about the Michigan side winning!  Not so sure how I feel about team shirts...

I am fine to ride or take a caddie- would prefer walking with a caddie, but not a big deal.

I will take a single room for Saturday, and since I do not know anyone well on the MI squad, am glad to play with whoever.

Currently a .3 index, but can't play to it!

Has this somehow morphed into some kind of sissy net event or something?

"Handicaps?  F**k that sh*t!  Pabst Blue Ribbon!"

Shivy, I was just trying to answer your question.  You've asked twice while we're worrying about indexes.  I think it's simply to set up the matches roughly evenly, not to morph into a sissy net event.  I'm assuming the matches will be played scratch.  George and Tom can confirm.

The first page of this thread has been updated to show that Kevin Cahoon is now in the event as Patrick unfortunately had to drop.  I'll try to keep the info on that page as current as possible.

If I don't hear from guys about food, I will assume they are in for all meals.  For the guys who have spoken to me about food (and caddies and lodging), you're all set as I am tracking everything.

Also, if guys guys want to swap b/c their current team doesn't make sense geographically, let me know.  I think Liddy and Bice would be a good swap, correct?

Okay with me to swap Rob Bice for Tim Liddy, although having three architects on one team is probably pushing our luck.

I am looking through my roster and don't see handicaps yet for Ari Techner, Patrick Boyd and Bill Steele.  Everyone else has reported in -- nice work guys.

I feel very strongly that we should do best-ball matches on Saturday and alternate-shot on Sunday.

I also propose that for the purposes of mixing, that all the matches should be 9-hole matches, so we get to play with more people from the other team.  [Plus, nine-hole matches are rife with the possibility of upsets.]  In the Renaissance Cup, we just reshuffle on the tenth tee, and trade opponents with the group ahead of us or behind us.

It appears from emails that very few of the players on my team know any of the other players, so for the best-ball matches I will just pair everyone some random way ... alphabetically perhaps.

David Cronan and Eric Terhorst
George Freeman and Jeff Tang
Jim Tang and Jug Tigerman
Kevin Cahoon and Mark Smolens
Mike Kennedy and Pat Craig
Rob Bice and Steve Salman

I would be willing to step in and just play on sunday if you needed someone. I am around a 5 handicap. I haven't posted in a while, but I shot a 78 with Mike Hendren two weeks ago. Just let me know. Thanks.

Zack,

One of the Sunday-only spots it yours.  Feel free to join for dinner on Sat night and stay at the club (let me know); or you can arrive Sun morning.  If someone drops out, you'll be moved into both days (b/c you're the first alternate).

Thanks and glad you can make it!

The last time I played there I only missed one fairway, and that was only by a couple feet. And if I can do that anyone can hit fairways at LD!  :)  The fun part comes when on the greens!  8)

Alright Gents,

Time to talk dollars and cents.

The prices for everything were originally outlined in the first post of this thread, but I'll summarize everything again here:

*These prices now include taxes and gratuity*

Saturday lunch:                                   $15
Saturday golf:                                     $105
Saturday dinner:                                  $35
Overnight room (double occupancy):      $80 ($160 – single occupancy)
Sunday breakfast:                                $15
Sunday golf:                                        $105
Sunday lunch:                                      $15
TOTAL:                                               $370 ($450 for a single room)

Alcoholic beverages will be on a cash basis.  Also, the honor bar in the cabins will need to be settled on an individual basis Sunday morning.

Caddies – Cash directly to the caddies: $50 per bag plus tip (suggested tip $25-$30 per bag). Forecaddie fee: $50 per foursome ($12.50 per player) plus tip (suggested $10-$15 per bag)

The Club has requested that everyone pay in either cash or check.  Anything one doesn't partake in (i.e. certain meals or lodging) will be deducted from the total above.  We'll plan on getting everyone squared away upon arrival on Saturday.

Let me know if anyone has any questions.

Having never been to the Warren Course, I'd be interested in stopping there on the way home on Sunday.  I could also fill a spot in the early Saturday morning group if one is available. . .

Only two weeks.  Hope the weather's as good then as it appears to be this weekend (God I hate sitting in the office working on Saturdays -- the price you pay for procrastinating when a brief's deadline approaches I guess).

Jud Tigerman
Chris Flamion
Paul Thomas
Mark Smolens
Steve Salmen
Ken Fry (?)

George et al,

Unfortunately I twisted my knee this past weekend (playing guitar no less, middle age sucks!).  It's not horrible but I don't want to take a spot on the chance it will be better by next week, so please fill my spot from the wait list if possible.  I'm bummed I can't make it and am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.  As for the Warren course, there are 3 times under my name and a 24 hour cancellation policy.  I will coordinate with Chris F. on this....Have a great time all and again my apologies...

Jin,

The lost ball factor at Lost Dunes (I'm sure the pun wasn't intended) isn't huge.  As long as you're not spraying it +40 yds offline, you shouldn't lose a ton of balls.

I would stay away from the cargo shorts and lets keep the hats pointing forward, eh?

Heard from Brian Slawnik again today, he is not coming after all.  So, we may both be one player short, which is no big deal ... our only problem will be if we don't have the same numbers and have to put someone's name "in the envelope".

The way I've played in Bandon the past two days, I should probably put my own name in there!

Rich- I think I can arrange an early morning round for 4-8 at a fun little private club down the road from Lost Dunes.  Chikaming CC is not the Warren course, but it is fun to play, and 10 minutes from Lost Dunes.  Let me know if anyone is interested.

Thanks George and Tom for all your work in pulling this together.   I was talking to a friend yesterday who is a superintendent in Chicago and Lost Dunes is his favorite course; he told me to expect a couple of 3-4 putts.

Its not really clear how the pairings have shaken out, so i was wondering if its possible to post the match-ups sometime before Saturday.  Thanks.

SLOT 9:  Tim Nugent and myself

Perhaps George can copy this and add pairings / opponents.

Please see the below pairings for the first round, complete with approx. tee times.

Best Ball
                   West Team         East Team

Group 1   1:00pm   Andrew Calcutt & Bill Sietz VS. Ari Techner & Bill Steele
Group 2   1:10pm   Chris Flamion & Chuck Brown VS. Brad Tufts & Carl Nichols
Group 3   1:20pm   Dan Moore &  Dave Schmidt VS. Jin Kim & John Kavanaugh
Group 4   1:30pm   Eric Terhorst & George Freeman VS. Jon Heise & Jonathan Becker
Group 5   1:40pm   Jeff Tang & Jon Winick   VS. Ken Fry & Kris Bekcher
Group 6   1:50pm   Jim Tang & Kevin Cahoon VS. Matt Harrison &   Matt O' Brien
Group 7   2:00pm   Mark Smolens & Mike Kennedy VS.   Matt Schmidt & Patrick Boyd
Group 8   2:10pm   Pat Craig & Rob Bice VS. Rich Hetzel & Andrew Lewis
Group 9   2:20pm   Steve Salmen & Sven Nilsen VS. Tim Nugent & Tom Doak

Not sure what the exact plan is for Sunday morning's rounds (Alternate Shot?) and how those should be paired (by handicap?). Regarless, let me know if you want me to switch around the excel spreadsheet to create pairings for then as well.

Looking forward to it!

Let's still plan on playing nine hole matches ... then at the tenth tee, West team 1 will play East team 2, followed by West 2 vs. East 1.  If we are still on an odd number of matches, the last match will have to be a rematch, unless one of the earlier groups demands a rematch and keeps on going.

Cabin 3
1 Kevin Cahoon & Steve Salmen
2 Mark Smolens & Bill Seitz
3 Tom Doak (single)
4 John Kavanaugh (single)

Any chance of a live video feed from the living area of Cabin 3?

Mr. Kennedy, please permit me to apologize in advance. What kind of beer do you like? I will bring some along for Saturday evening -- to make up for the afternoon of riding your back as my handicap is currently going in the wrong direction. . .

By my account then the back nine pairings would look like the following:

Best Ball
Back Nine      West Team      East Team

Group 1   3:00pm   Andrew Calcutt & Bill Sietz   VS.  Brad Tufts & Carl Nichols
Group 2   3:10pm   Chris Flamion & Chuck Brown  VS.  Ari Techner & Bill Steele
Group 3   3:20pm   Dan Moore & Dave Schmidt  VS.  Jon Heise & Jonathan Becker
Group 4   3:30pm   Eric Terhorst & George Freeman  VS.  Jin Kim & John Kavanaugh
Group 5   3:40pm   Jeff Tang & Jon Winick    VS.  Matt Harrison & Matt O' Brien
Group 6   3:50pm   Jim Tang &   Kevin Cahoon  VS.  Ken Fry & Kris Bekcher
Group 7   4:00pm   Mark Smolens & Mike Kennedy  VS. Rich Hetzel & Andrew Lewis
Group 8   4:10pm   Pat Craig &   Rob Bice  VS.  Matt Schmidt & Patrick Boyd
Group 9   4:20pm   Steve Salmen & Sven Nilsen  VS.  Tim Nugent & Tom Doak

All I know is it doesn't matter who is playing Rob and I, because they're going down! :)  ;)

Just curious as to who's actually running the show for the Chicago squad.  Is George our captain, or has he abdicated the thrown to Pat?  In either case, just need to know who I'm looking to for inspiration when Tim and Tom are putting on the pressure.

George is the Captain. I just so happen to be the one with the excel spreadsheet and within earshot of George at work. :)

I think we should reserve a couple of captain's picks for each team, that don't have to be first come-first served.  Up to you how you use them.  I will probably go off the World Ranking List.

My pairings will still be the same, with the one cancellation being filled out of alphabetical order:

SLOT 1:  Ari Techner and Bill Steele
SLOT 2:  Brad Tufts and Carl Nichols
SLOT 3:  Jin Kim and John Kavanaugh
SLOT 4:  Jon Heise and Jonathan Becker
SLOT 5:  Ken Fry and Kris Belcher
SLOT 6:  Matt Harrison and Matt O'Brien
SLOT 7:  Matt Schmidt and Patrick Boyd
SLOT 8:  Rich Hetzel and Andrew Lewis [replacement]
SLOT 9:  Tim Nugent and myself

You weren't kidding.  Top notch!

Looks like the really heavy stuff has already passed on through.  Hopefully 65 and sunny tomorrow will dry things out -- though I certainly wouldn't mind if they had to leave the greens uncut.  I have an idea that the super's going to try to make it difficult for us, and on those greens that won't be very difficult.  Somehow I don't think that tomorrow's round at Poplar Creek will be very good preparation for the weekend!

The super can try his best to make it hard on us, however I equiped my ProV1's with bold cheater lines last night in preperation of any tough 2 footers.  :) ;D ;)

It is supposed to be windy tomorrow, which should help dry everything out, and I believe everything is built on sand, so that should help keep the course somewhat dry.

I'm predicting the best golf weather we've had for a while.  It looks like the 2nd wave this afternoon could be worse for them (we got 3'3" up here in Lake County already).  All the Stormwater design here at White Deer Run is functioning as designed but another deluge could stress it.

I wouldn't be counting on firm and fast but at least it should be dry.  Not worrying about those greens, I got my Belly Putter ;D (Plus  TD's my partner - who needs a caddy?

I just checked WeatherUnderground and it looks good for the weekend.  No rain, some sun.  Overnight lows dipping below 50, but daytime highs into the 60's.  Cool, only light breezes.  (Nae wind, nae golf!)  Maybe just a t-neck and a windshirt.

A dumb question:  Is there any kind of agenda/itinerary/summary of events or at least tee times yet?

My congratulations to Captain George Freeman for the West's 11-9 victory over the East in the first Midwest Mashie.

I insisted on some foursomes matches day 2, and our East team was 1-4 in those to seal its demise, before playing well in the singles matches.

Tangs- fun to run into some STC grads!

Many thanks to George and Tom for having us and hosting a great event.  I had lots of fun meeting everyone and had a great time playing with my partner Jon H, George F, Eric T, Mike K, Andrew C, and Brad T.  You guys were all great.

Great event and thanx to George for putting this together and Tom for making the accomodations.   This was my first GCA golf event and it was so much fun.   It was also interesting how people differed in person versus on GCA.

I think we should definitely do this again.   I might be able to host.   Thanx, everyone!

Many thanks to all involved, but especially George, Tom and the staff at Lost Dunes.  This was my first official GCA event, and I had a blast meeting and playing with so many other architecture-obsessed folks.

Best, Andrew

Thanks to George Freeman, Tom Doak and the staff at Lost Dunes for a fantastic weekend.  Also thanks to Tom and Tim Nugent for sharing your experiences and current outlook on gca at Saturday night's discussion.

It was great catching up with some familiar faces and having another chance to put faces with names.

Thanks to Kris Belcher and Tim Nugent for carrying my butt around for 36 holes.  The East side came up short much to the disappointment of Coach Doak, but already looking forward to next year's rematch!

Ditto to all that has been said above...a great weekend.

Special thanks to Tom for his time and for the treat of playing at LD, as well as humoring all the questions on Saturday night.  Thanks also to George, even though his team beat ours!

I enjoyed all my playing partners for the weekend, and I look forward to seeing you all at later events and golf trips!

Congratulations to you guys for playing foursomes matches.  We play afternoon foursomes at the Buda Cup every year and they are really fun to play.  It's a shame we don't play more alternate shot golf in the US.

Carl:  no chance.  This picture was taken on Saturday and it was dead into the wind.  On Sunday, a guy like Jon Hurley might (and I emphasize "might") have been able to get there....

Dave:
I assumed that was the case, and was kinda messing around.

Shivas,

I smoked that ball and still had 100 yds in for the second shot!!  But at 391 yds downwind, like it was the second day, maybe some of the long drive guys might be able to get it there.  I would love to see someone attempt it.

Top ten things I learned this weekend:

1.  There are not only some great personalities on this site, but some great players as well.
2.  Tom Doak can smoke a 3 Wood from 235 into the wind and leave it pin high.
3.  I might need to learn Chinese.
4.  If you're looking forward to scrambled eggs for breakfast at Lost Dunes, you better have a tee time after 9:00.
5.  For some people, range time is overrated.
6.  Red wings fans aren't so bad afterall.
7.  Golfers love grass.
8.  As Tim Nugent put it, even Frankenstein isn't quite so sure what to do with the Monster some times (ie - those greens were nasty).
9.  Having your name at the end of the list alphabetically can be a blessing.
10.  The road hole bunker fits two, horizontally.

What a great weekend! Glad that we could keep the Mashie on the right side of Lake Michigan :)

Many many thanks to George, Tom, and everyone at Lost Dunes for putting on a fantastic event. It was great being paired with my partner for the weekend, Rob B., and I owe him more than a few beers for carrying my duck hook swing around for two days. We also had a blast playing alternate shot on Sunday morning. It was great playing with Rich H., Andrew L., Tim N., Ken F., Andrew C., Steve S., and Jon W. over the weekend at both Lost Dunes and at the Warren Course. IT was also great meeting many of you for the first time before and after the rounds and to be able to put names together with faces.

The golf course was in great shape this weekend and the pin placements made the already great greens even more fun to play. After 3" of rain the previous Thursday, it was almost bone dry and playing fast.

I will second the comments made and thanks to Tom for his talk and Q&A after dinner Saturday night...a complete treat!

I hope that this becomes an annual success and that we can start planning next years event soon!! :)

Tom Y:

The people down there include caddies and forecaddie and maybe someone playing #11 -- there seemed to be a lot of balls over on #12 from the eleventh tee, more than I'm used to seeing.

Tom, you would be interested to know that we sent out five foursomes (alternate-shot) matches followed by four groups of four playing singles matches.  The foursomes matches all finished 18 holes in 3 1/2 hours or less; then we had to wait 1/2 hour for the first four-ball to get home, and they straggled in after that, several minutes apart.

Tom:
We were actually a three-ball and finished at exactly four hours, probably 1 or 1 1/2 holes back of the foursomes match in front of us.  Behind us there was at least a 1/2 hour gap, and we had a twosome of members finish behind us, who must've snuck in among the GCA groups.

Tom Yost,

Most caddies know that the safest place to stand is the middle of the fairway.   ;)

Our group's forecaddie hustled and was pretty quick with the yardages.  I appreciated that.

I'm glad I got to meet many that attended - class acts all around.  It was a great first GCA event for me and I look forward to many more.

Tom D. - thanks again for being so generous with your time and information.  Tim - thanks for your time and input as well.  Sven - nice top 10 list!  Steve S - my wife still can't get her head around this male bonding via internet thing, and there is no way to verbalize it that makes any sense!  Andrew - although you kindly noted that there are no apologies in foursomes, I'M SORRY!  ;D  Pat and Mike K - it's good to be Foo King Long (and I want some of those Foo King Scratch wedges - spinning a 15-yard shot out of the junk is a nice way to sell clubs!!).  Mark S - not every one can (or should) wear purple pants - I like your style!  Rich - hope you made it home OK after all that driving.  Everyone else - Thanks.

P.S. I ordered a few dozen ProV1's via one of those personalization offers with "MIDWEST MASHIE....LOST DUNES GC.....MAY 15-16 2010" on them.  Was going to pass them around, but despite the delivery guarantee, they arrived TODAY.  So if any of you make it to metro-Detroit and want to tee it up, I can host and give you some souvenir golf balls!

Tom, I believe that my foursomes match (we were first off) finished in about 3:05.  I think everybody really enjoyed it.

JC Jones - I can explain the Michigan/East loss; it was because I alternated in as a "West" player  ;)

Though this is probably getting boring, let me too reiterate my thanks to our Captains, George and Tom, for putting this together. I can't wait to get back to Bridgman in August. I had a blast with all of my playing partners and opponents (Matt, he who owns the purple, rules the world. . .  and Zack, you owe me a golf ball).

Just wondering, did Steve's camera get into that bottle of Jack on Saturday night? For some reason Rich's photos seemed to be more sober. ;D

Thanks for all the kind words.  It was truly a pleasure meeting everyone and I had a blast hacking it around Lost Dunes with my playing partners (sorry Bill S. for pulling me as an alternate shot partner!).  Thank you again Tom for helping us get out at Lost Dunes and putting up with our Q&A Saturday night.  I think I can speak for everyone when I say it was really interesting getting your insight on various topics, including the golf course we all just played.

Good work to the West Team in winning the Inaugural Midwest Mashie (11-9)!  The Mashie is in safe keeping until I dust it off and putt it up for grabs in next years event.

Ok, so now that we have played the course more than once, what do you all think of the fourth green?   I loved it.  It's a short Par 5, so I don't see the problem with a wild green.   However, I can see how some people may hate it.

It might be the most difficult green I've ever played and the initial part of the hole lures you into a false sense of security until you get around the green.

The fairway is huge and it sets up perfectly for a slinger draw around the corner.  With the hole being downwind both days, most guys had a chance to hit it in 2.  The part that catches you first isn't the green, but it's the long grass behind the green that creeps closer the further you miss to the right.  You would think that missing to the right is the smart play because you're pitching back up the slope, but actually, the correct miss is to the left with the open runoff area. The grass to the right will catch tons of balls (it caught mine the first day) and your birdie chance is virtually gone at that point. But from the left it's extremely difficult to get it close because you're pitching back down the slope....and calling it a slope is an understatement!!  Unless you knock it stiff, you're gonna be working hard to get it in the hole.

All I know is that if your gonna make 4, your short game had better be tip top.  It's a crazy hole, but I think I like it.  :)

EDIT - Dan Moore just started a great thread on #4.

I have a rudimentary routing question for Tom Doak that I probably should have thought of Saturday night, but didn't because I was too busy filling my face with that tri-colored seafood pasta... :

5 par 3s...

Three run west.

Two run south.

None north and none east.

How come?

Shivas, I think you've been duped.  3 runs east, 5 runs ssw, 9 actually runs more to the west than it does to the south, 13 runs on a similar line to 5 and 16 runs east.  The only direction missing is north.

Sven, you're right - partly.  I keep thinking that the highway runs mostly east there, but it's really running mostly N to NE at that point, which got me confused directionally.

Still, look at Google Earth:  3 and 16 run the same way (just slightly southeast) and 5, 9 and 13 all run southwest into the same basic prevailing wind...

As long as you say 5 (ssw), 9 (wsw) and 13 (sw) generally run to the SW, we are in agreement.

I've always thought the directions of par 3's to be a topic that gets people too excited.  Its pretty cool when it works out that they play to the points on the compass.  But it would be hard to make that the case on a true out and back routing.  And for a routing like Lost Dunes where holes play to every direction, the fact that the par three's don't run to the north wind only means you'll have some second shots on 4's that do.

Shivas, with as disjointed as that site is - an interstate cutting across one hald and and entrance road across most of the other half, where would you put one? The long stretches of n/s RE were used to get the par 5's hence no e/w par 5's either.  But, since the 3rd shot for 5's and mid-4's is essentially the same as a 3 - does itr eally matter that much or is it just cookbook analysis? Plus, being so close to Lake M, the winds tend to come from multiple directions depending on low or high pressure.

Without the environmental constraints, I doubt if #9 would have been a 3. That walkback is pretty long around the wetland. I probably would have played both 9 and 18 to 18 fairway.  Tom smiled when I told him and said they did look at it and even planted some of the only trees they planted to close off the gap as 9 was too evident coming up 18.

Shivas:

I didn't worry too much about the par-3's not playing in every compass direction.

The direction of four of them (3, 9, 13 and 16) was pretty much locked in due to the shape of the property and the boundaries of the ponds and environmental easements.  The fifth hole was really the only "elective" -- at one time I had #5 playing as a short 4 across the entrance road and then #6 was a par-3 into the corner, but Jeff Shearer was concerned about playing across the entrance, so we switched them back.  Either way, that short hole would've played the same compass direction, anyway.

I have always thought that the four-points-of-the-compass par-3 thing is an overrated ideal, that many modern architects are slaves to just because it's an easy thing to pick on.

I do note that #5 is the longest par-3 and #13 the shortest, so the wind will not push them both of them back toward the median.  If you've got your long par-3 downwind and your short 3 into the wind, then they aren't really as long or short as they claim to be.

P.S. to Tim:  There is an E-W par-5 hole, it's #10.

The four par 3's at Cog Hill play to different yardages on the cards, but with the right wind and taking into account elevation changes they all can play to essentially the same yardage.  I had a round there earlier in the month where I pulled the same club on each of them.

Tom, I must be brain-dead. At least it was a par 5 for me!  I guess I forgot because Ken Fry hit the second shot on Sunday so all I remembered was Drive and 2nd shot was over.

Gentlemen,
As a fairly new boy on the block and as far away from Lake Michigan as one can reliably get (Brisbane Oz) I have taken vicarious pleasure in following this thread from its inception to its denouement.  It sounded as though it was going to be a fun-filled adventure on a course that, now proven by the marvelous pictures supplied, would be a thrill. And so it has. It was fun for me to put faces to some of the names that pop up with such regularity on this site. Quite a few of you look as though your bark is worse than your bite.! Thanks for the entertainment and the introduction to another great American golf course.

Sorry to call this thread back to the top of everyone's page, but Ran graciously allowed me to register today, so I wasn't able to post last week.  I just wanted to thank everyone treating me like one of the group, even though I was an "unknown" and a last minute replacement.  I've already thanked some people individually, but it was a really great group to be a part of.  And of course, the golf course was terrific.

And George, don't worry about it.  I'm pretty sure I hit enough poor shots in our foursomes match to give you a run for your money.  Of course, the kicker is that I hit my best drive of the day on 18, after it was already decided.
