Hi Brett.  Outstanding job with everything!!

Do you have any close up shots of the synthetic green?

thanks Jonathon,

I have loaded up a couple of pics from when we did it(I will load some more recent ones tomorrow)... but as I said earlier, we did not have the correct dried and sized sand granules, so we sifted by hand 14 ton of filter sand, but had too many larger sized grains of sand. this resulted in us getting some of the vertical fibres of the turf buried. This meant that instead of a green with very similar characteristics of a bent green, it is a bit bumpier than it should be. I have since found the sand, but had an installer here from America - so we had to do it on the spot.
I am tempted to vacuum it all out and do it again - but it is a massive, massive exercise, and I am not up to it!

Note, that this particular type of synthetic green has a secret proprietry ingredient along with the rubber and sand granules, that gives it long lasting anti-compaction properties (some can turn concrete like after a few years), and the key point in getting the ball to react as it should on a bent green.

We had to restart the sub base, due to poor compaction. stone dust.

Thanks Brett for the quick response.  The correct sand or not, it still looks great.

What are you going to do if you ever move?  ;)

Brett, how true is the synthetic green to putt on? I know of a person who has one in their back yard and they say putts tend to hop and bobble a bit on it. Do full iron shots in leave pitch marks?

This is super cool. Yeah, we all pretty much wish we had one of these. Really incredible.

Thomas:
It is pretty good, but as I said earlier - we used the incorrect sand at installation and it has suffered from that, if you look at the pic of the green above "before rolling" where you can see sand, that is buried fibres. Even taking this into account, it still putts true if a little bouncy :-[
With the correct sand, you would have a very true and well rolling putt. I have some turf left over, and am thinking of building a small green to putt on only - if I do, I will send pics of that.
It sounds to me like your friend's green wasn't installed correctly.

Initially, first 2 years, a ball hit from say over 90 yards, would kick up a small amount of sand on impact, but no pitch mark.

Thanks Guys - a labour of love - believe me - and well worth it if you ever get the opportunity.

It was a tremendous learning curve and my education in some of the many elements of GCA I will be forever grateful for and an excellent bonus.

Always COLD beer in the fridge... ;)

Strategies for each hole, after setting myself the goal of a tee shot for every club from sand iron through to 3 iron (plus extra depending on the breeze)
Below is a "routing layout" I designed, mixing up the holes for a good match!

road black   106 – “high pitch” – allowing to feedback off LHS fringe.

pond white   132 – “high fade” over bunker, green slopes to the LEFT, fade in to green

forest gold   149 – “low straight runner” – tricky shot and better when turf is low and hard

forest white 161 – “ running fade” or fly it there with spin

ponds gold   117 – “Full shot – max spin” hit to centre ridge, will feed back to hole

road white   93 – “ Safety Draw or fading wedge”

road gold   80 – “ low? High? Fade? Draw? Punch? ¾?”

ponds black 143 – “ Hit a draw or fade, high into the wind is good”

forest black    177 – “Hit a draw to stop”

see “course guide” to follow  :)

here is my drawings of each tee shot: Ponds Black is the one with the most "danger" to our house and also from water storage dam and wee burn...
The circled numbers are the holes shot par values I have assigned. the stroke index here in OZ.

sorry - here is a bigger picture - hopefully you can read it ok.

When designing it - I began with 3 small greens (for each shot) and joined them together as one large green - hence some of the drawings have the green as a circle.

I don't get the par values thing. Aren't they all par 3's??

John,
some are much easier than others, eg, Forest/Vines Black at 189 yards probably has a par value of 3.8-4.0 - so I rated that the hardest hole.
Road White: is rated easiest hole and probably has a par value of 2.0 to 2.5.

I rated each hole on the chances of making a Par three, Plus or minus.

Does that make sense?

Yes, that makes sense. So its more of a difficult rating than saying that a 150 yard hole is a par 4. (Though that reminds me, a while back someone posted a 90 degree dogleg hole with high trees that was a 180ish yard par 4. Yeesh)

Brett,

Any chance you can post some updated pics?  Looks like all of the links to your images on this thread are no longer active.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I have now updated and added a few more pics - and below a few more, we are selling our house, so we have lots of photos.
here are a few of what I would call my favourite memories of this place. Hopefully the new owner plays golf!

cliche I know..

the three Road tees

from deck

Storm the Newfoundland

The Bore flowing into the pond and creek system

..and looking back the other way, top of the creek into the ponds, house on left

"club back to the sheep and thru to the flag"

"Logo"!

I think this last one is from a visiting GCA'er...

Cheers Mike.

At worst I want some space to be able to hit balls, but it is the short game stuff that is so important. It will all depend on where we go.

Turbo, house sold, and am not sure purchaser is a keen golfer, so don't know what is to become of it.

For the short term, we will rent while we look for the next stage for where we will live. Not sure exactly what that looks like! Certainly though, we hope to get a nice farm somewhere.

Cheers
