2014 U S Open to Pinehurst

Pinehurst #2 to be exact. It will be the third US Open
at the Pinehurst resort, which will also host next year's US Amateur.

I like #2 and it tests second shots and patience like few courses can.  For reasons that I don't quite understand, it is not an Open venue that excites me.

I like the fact that Pinehurst has a unique set up among Open venues, relying less on penal rough with difficulty holding the ball on the greens being the principal defense.  The weakness of Pinehurst is that it seems to produce a lot of repetition because so many approach shots roll off the greens into the collection areas.

hopefully it will be in a little better shape than during the last open....and I hope that putter burn heals where Woods scraped his putter on purpose

Didn't it seem to play more like a traditional open course in 2005 than in 1999?  I thought 1999 was fantastic, but somewhat less so the last time, because it seemed like the green sites were intentionally put less in the spotlight, especially after Shinnecock.

Nothing against Pinehurst, but I would love to see some new courses get a shot. It will be cool to see Merion in a few years. Pebble is a given. The return to Bethpage makes sense after the success of the last one. As for the others scheduled over the next few years, while all are I'm sure exceptional courses, none have me all that excited as Open venues.

Despite the problems at Shinnecock, it is a course I would love to see host an event every year. Can't say that about many of the others that are in this current rotation.

1999 and 2005 were quite different set-ups for the open.  1999 was wider fairways, but much firmer greens with cooler weather (only in the 70s) the week of the tournament.  2005 was narrower fairways, more receptive greens with much warmer temperatures (near 90 all the time).  I preferred the 1999 set-up over the 2005 set-up because (a) it brought the big stick out of the bag and (b) the 2d shots were more challenging.

I love it, as has been said before, #2 is the best course inside 50 yards in America.  I think that it is a great course, a great environment and a course that most of the pro's love.  I can't wait, but then again, I can't wait for the coverage to start tomorrow.
