Par 3 9th & 18th
« on: August 05, 2005, 10:04:34 AM »
Played the two new RTJ Trail courses at Muscle Shoals (They've got the Swampers and they've been known to pick a song or two, yes they do.) yesterday.  Did not play from the 8,000+ yards tips :o

Both the 9th and 18th of The Fighting Joe course are par threes.  I have only seen this one other time, at Tillie's Oak Hills in San Antonio.

Any other course finish both nines with one-shotters?

My humble home course, the Owatonna (Minn.) Country Club, has par 3s on 9 and 18 that are nearly identical.

The Lakes Golf Club in Sydney, Australia (which has hosted Australian Opens and various other events) finishes each nine with a par 3.

Maketewah, a Bendelow-Ross Course in Cincinnati, ends 3-3 that way, too.

Royal St David's - though as the ninth is out in the country I didn't notice at the time.

Greenspring Valley Golf and Hunt Club located just outside of Baltimore has a unique routing. Th course opens with a 205 yard par 3 and finishes with a 150 yard par 3. These two holes are on one side of a road along with the clubhouse. The remaining 16 holes are all across the street. The ninth hole is a par 5.

I can't think of any ending 9-3, 18-3...

interested in your rx to both RTJ Trail courses...there's also one at the north end of the state, haven't heard any comments.

I also think there are no 9's of par 3 at these new sites, as is the case at the older sites? Maybe its their way of compensating!  :P

I'll be playing at one tommorrow, the Ivanhoe GC at Cottonwood Golf Club in Rancho San Diego. Both 9(165 yards) and 18(194 yards) return to the club house. The other 18 hole course there called Monte Vista is an out and back routing that also used to finish with a par 3. Both designed by O. W. Mormon.

Don,

Still recovering from 36 holes yesterday.  Hotter than a pair of jumper cables at a Skynyrd concert.

In general, the two courses at Muscle Shoals are more kind and gentle than their older sisters.   Wide open with less severe green surrounds and internal contours.   Host a tour event at 8,000 yards and I'm guessing 20 under might not win it.

Mike,

Much thanks - those courses look pretty good come January to folks up north!  :)

RTJ's first course, Midvale Golf Club, has both 9 and 18 as par threes. Both are steeply uphill, with 9 playing 130 and 18 playing 210.

Brook Lea, a Ross course in Rochester, has this combination, with 9 at about 175 and 18 at 140 from all but the tips (171 from all the way back).

Haven't played it, but West Shore in Harrisburg, PA has both as par threes.

West Shore's Par 3s on 9 and 18 are excellent. The ninth is especially ninth with a pond fronting the green well below the tee. About 170 yards.

18 isn't as good, but is a good 190 yard proposition to a green that sits above the clubhouse. Tough shots for both.

The Valley Links at French Lick also have Nos. 9 & 18 ending as par threes. Its not quite as obvious there perhaps since 9 does not return to the clubhouse.

Good catch, Brad!

The 9th and 18th at Makatewah are not the original finishing holes, but have been since Ross did his work in the 20's and the clubhouse was re-sited.

They are very different holes. 9 is 212 and so flat that the green is mostly unseen. The the proper shot is a running shot that will feeds to the back and left.

18 is a 155 yd pitch to a small shelf of a green. A large patio sits atop the embankment behind the green and is the site of much merriment during club events as nervous competitors address their tee shots and the wagering heats up!

I like the 18th because no one can blame his approach shot on a bad lie.
